Whispering Canyon Cafe Menu Change

We just cancelled our reservation. My husband always orders and LOVES the skillet. Me, not so much. I had ordered a steak. Last year our 10 year old 'adult' also had the skillet and enjoyed it as well. The platter definately sounds better to me than the skillet did, but not having the option to get my steak kind of bums me out. Oh well... there are SO many different places to try and to replace our WCC we got Kona Cafe and I am super excited to try something new. :) I am sure we will be back to WCC, it just isn't a must do for us now.

Is this a 100% certain change? And what will the price be now?
The news came from WCC servers, and I've already seen a pic of the new lunch menu - no skillet on it. So presumably the dinner news is also accurate. As soon as I see the price anywhere, I'll post it here.

That's unfortunate. My family was supposed to go in December the day before my wedding, but I know that not all of them will want the skillet... I'm assuming the price will go up too. I guess I need to find something else.

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear it's messing with your wedding plans. But I agree with you - the price probably will go up, and if you're hesitant about the skillet appealing to everyone, somewhere else might be a better option. :( Do you see any possible ADR alternatives for your party size?

So glad that I canceled our reservation there. My husband was going to get the skillet, but as a veggie, it didn't appeal to me for obvious reasons so I had my heart set on the quinoa cakes. We decided to cancel in favour of Via Napoli and I'm psyched we did ... if we want to eat at WL, I'll just book Artist Point next time.

Yes, I think I'm going to switch to Sanaa. They have options that are reasonably priced that my family will like and I know my mom really wants to go see the animals since we won't get to visit AK while she's there.

I think that's a good choice. Sanaa is a beautiful restaurant, and it gets extremely positive reviews on lots of sites. The food is Indian-inspired with some African influences, but the dishes are relatively tame and not very spicy (besides the ones that are labeled as spicy, such as "Spicy Durban Chicken"). Hopefully everyone in your party will enjoy it. :)

Menu update:

For dinner, appetizers are still available à la carte, so you can still add an individual salad to the meal. It's an arugula and mixed green salad with apples, candied pecans, blue cheese, and apple cider vinaigrette, and it costs $6.49 for one.

The platter is $33 (well, $32.99) per person, and it includes your choice of three meats (Kansas City-style smoked pork ribs, herb-baked chicken, hand-carved oak-roasted beef strip loin, citrus-crusted market fish, and western-style sausage), sides for sharing (seasonal vegetables, herb-crushed Yukon Gold potatoes, cowboy-style baked beans, corn on the cob), and a dessert sampler platter (including chocolate cake, jalapeño-lime cheesecake, and an apple-cranberry buckle).

The kids menu appears to be separate. They still offer "kids complete meals" such as grilled fish of the day, grilled cheese dippers, meaty macaroni with ground turkey, or a cheeseburger.

To those of you who are interested in spiked beverages, there's a new milkshake that may appeal to you: Pa's Maple Shake, which is Tap 357 Maple Rye Whiskey blended with vanilla ice cream. The non-alcoholic chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry shakes (with free refills) are still offered.

The changes aren't as bad as I expected, but some things about it confuse me. Since they kept the à la carte appetizers, what if someone just wants an appetizer and no entree? Or does everyone at the table have to participate in the skillet? If you can order appetizers without the skillet, can you still order dessert, and how much would dessert cost? What do vegetarians get for their entree (besides side dishes)? This menu confuses me because I've never seen à la carte appetizers combined with an all-you-can-eat family style entree like this before. Previously at WCC, there were à la carte options instead of the skillet, but now the skillet might be 'mandatory' for everyone at the table (just like if you sit with your party at 'Ohana or a character meal, you'll be charged even if you don't eat anything).

I hate that some folks had to change their plans because of this but I have to selfishly admit that I am also somewhat pleased to hear it. Even with ADRs the wait at WCC was sometimes pretty dang long (because folks like to stay around and enjoy the activities they do etc.) so maybe this change will reduce wait times more than just because of the removal of a menu to contend with.

This is what I was thinking as well. The skillet seems to be the most popular choice at this restaurant and that is what they have ready to go. When someone at the table orders one of the non-kid ala cart items the service slows dramatically. I think we are going to see much faster dining times which means more capacity and that equals easier to get ADRs.

So am I understanding this correctly, the new menu for Whispering Canyon, you can only order the "platter" or will there be other entrees?
At dinner only the skillet will be available (kind of like Garden Grill and 'Ohana). You can pick what you want and don't on it or what you want more of etc. but no menu of "dishes" to chose from.

Still sounds like a great meal. We used to go for last seating for lunch and have the skillet and it was only $18.99 compared to the $28.99 for dinner last time we went there.

I like to new Pa's milkshake option for adults. Too bad they did not have that as all you can drink.
