Which did you find most useful in the heat?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've seen recommendations for:
1. cooling bandanas
2. spray handheld fans
3. misty mates
4. mini fans

among others. I'm curious to find out what everyone has taken, what everyone has used, and what they prefer.. I mean I don't wanna have to go buy all of them!

PS: Yes we're going to be bringing water bottles and sunscreen, as we ARE native Floridians (for the most part)... I'm not looking so much for tips on keeping cool (I've already scoured a number of websites) as I am looking for feedback on the items mentioned...

Thanks in advance!

Water, water, water. Keeping yourself hydrated really helps. A thing we always do which is is nice, is if anyone has a phany-pack cooler, keep a washrag in it. A cold, wet rag on the back of the neck doeas wonders. Also, I find one of the best techniques is to take advantage of the buildings. If you're getting hot, stop in one of the counter-service restaurants or gift shops and cool down for a while. If you're at Epcot, Ice Station Cool is great, then stop in at the Rose and Crown Pub for a nice pint o' Guinness :slurp:

I think all you need is plenty of water, sun screen, sun glasses, cap, and as said above, make lots of use of Air Conditioned buildings and any other shade. Carrying around fans and mist bottles is more trouble than its worth in my opinion.

Keep hydrated, bounce in and out of the buildings and I find running cold water over your wrists (or plunging them in a fountain) helps.

Ride Kali Rapids and sit next to as large a person as possible - physics dictates that the heaviest part of the raft will hit the bottom of the splashdown first, thus giving you a cooling wave of water.

Nothing beats going back to the hotel for a mid-day dip in the pool.

I agree that carrying around extra misters and bottles of that kind is really more trouble than it's worth. It's just an extra thing to lug around all day.

Also, try to hit the nice cool rides during the hot part of the day. Once it was so hot my family and I went on IASW about 20 times, just because it was nice and cool on the boats... not that I'd reccommend that. :animwink:

I like the misty fan things but the problem is that if you're wearing sunglasses (and of course, you should be with full UV protection), then you have to clean your glasses off a lot. :(

Wide brim hats help keep the sun off your face so I always wear one of those (like my Tink "Sassy" hat in the pic) and of course, making liberal use of the a/c in the stores. (If possible, I walk through stores when it's hot instead of just down sidewalks. *laughs*)

Unfortunately, just keeping hydrated, eating (many people lose their appetite in heat and then you get lightheaded), sunscreen, hats and as much shade/air conditioning as possible, there's not much more to do. (Except, avoid WDW in summer which is what I do. Heh.)

1. Frequent trips to water fountains
2. Visit air-conditioned buildings or pavilions as much as possible
3. Go on water rides
4. Go outside when it's not so hot out (early morning / evening / night), and do indoor activities when it's the middle of the day

We went in July last year and I wasn't really bothered by the heat. We were in the A/C so much, the only time we were in the sun was walking between attractions. The one time we got overheated was standing in the massive crowd waiting for Spectromagic and Wishes. That was miserable. We used the misting fans for that.

I concur. Drink lots of water, and pace it throughout the day. Stay away from sugary drinks. When walking, walk through stores. You'll notice that in Futureworld, and on Main Street, there are large stores strung together along the walkways, just walk through them to cool off.

Cooling bandanas work well as we use them for flats fishing down here in South Florida. In my book anything you need to carry will just weigh you down in the end.Besides that most of the lines in all the parks will have misters with fans on in all the lines.

I found that the small folding paper fans are easy to carry. (They open up to make a small hanle with a round fan on the top.) I use one along with a SMALL (about the size of travel shampoo) plastic atomizer and it works almost as well as the ones that people carry around their necks. I can fit both in my purse; my son carries his in his pocket. I also found a very small, battery operated personal fan at Walgreens last month. I'll try it out next trip.

I'm not really sure what they are called, but we have these neck bands that you soak in water. As they get wet, the crystals inside the neck band expand, and it turns into a neck tube. The tube stays cool for hours on end, and all it really needs is a dunk in cool water to rejuvinate itself. Maybe someone on here knows what I am talking about and can provide you with it's name.
They are usually sold in sporting good/camping stores, and at most outside fairs (there is usually a booth set up selling them....at least by me)

They work really great, especially if you wrap it around your neck or head, it keeps you really cool. When I was in marching band, and even now when I twirl outside in the summer, I put one on, and it works great.

Also, don't forget that you can get free ice water at any of the counter service resturants. Nothing beats free in Disney!

If you are going to use the word "DUH" in your response, please make sure you spell MONORAIL correctly! Let's try to be nice and helpful to our fellow board members :)

I agree about the spray bottles, to hard to lug around and keep full!

If I need a spray bottle, I just try one out at the nearest gift shop/cart. :)

Other guests with spray bottles seem to be very happy to spray you if you ask nicely, especially those under 12 years old!

Thanks! I may have to check out these bandanas (if I can find a walmart down here that HAS them!)

I forgot about the misting/cooling stations at WDW. I appreciate how everyone is suggesting tips on keeping cool, but as I said, I'm already aware of those (water, air conditioning,. sunscreen, etc), and am more looking for feedback on the items mentioned. I know May 22-29 won't be HOT hot, but I wanna be sure we're covered anyway :)

and mid day trip back to the resort won't help as we're staying off site and have the florida 3 day pass.

I have the little personal fans I picked up, and I think i'll pick up the cooling bandana, forego the bulky spray fan (although I wish they had a smaller more manageable one), and pass up the misty mate.

Thanks so much!

What about the Tomorrowland Transit Authority? I always use that to keep cool, check out lines in Space Mountain... plus there's never a wait! (Except at Christmas, which I knew was a sign of the apocalypse... )
