I’ve never eaten there either. Although the first Panera opened in Canada in 2008, according to Google Maps, the closest one is 59 km away.
60km isn't far by Wyoming standards, so that wouldn't have stopped me back when I lived in the states. I grew up in a town without fast food places or really without anything to do. If we wanted to go to the movies, go bowling, go rollerskating, go shopping, etc, we had to go to the next town over, which was 65 kilometers away. We did have a restaurant in town, but it wasn't great, so most people drove into Gillette to go out for special occassions. We were used to driving 65km for everything because that was the closest town to us. But as far as I know, we didn't have a Panera there.

When I was in Vietnam I found out I was on a lot of "pray for" lists. It is amazing how quickly people get religion when in a war zone. Somehow, without any reason, I might add, many others thought I needed praying for. What's up with that? I think it was a Southern Baptist thing! Maybe my birth talent to face any problem with sarcasm. Helped keep my sanity, but probably was harmful to others? Maybe?

I’m always comforted knowing that I’m on someone’s prayer list.

I feel a profound loss knowing that the one person who prayed for me and my family every single day for more than a decade, is gone. After my parents passed, Auntie took on the mantle of praying for us daily.

Oh sure, she prayed for us semi-regularly before, but since 2011, no matter where she was (world travelling missionary that she was), she prayed for my family - me, Mike, our children, my siblings and their spouses and children. By name. Every. Single. Day.

Do I think God is protecting us less/blessing us less as a result? Of course not. It was just nice knowing that someone was lifting us up in prayer daily. And yes, I pray for my family every day … but I so often forget to include myself.

Well it's not every day, but I did just send up a prayer for you, and all your family (including Daisy).

I've never eaten at Panera.
I've seen work groups have business meetings, job interviews, client meet and greets at Panera Bread while enjoying menu items and caffeine. More cost effective if groups do not have an office space they own or rent. Also there is a Panera and Chipotle next to each other which is next to my LA Fitness gym. After lap swimming in the 25 meter pool I am voraciously hungry and thirsty and both locations are a 2 minute walk from the gym.

That's nice, but when you are 20 years old, in Vietnam, it simply meant that someone thought you were a sinner of high degree that required special attention. In other words, a bad a$$. I was kinda proud. No one ever thought of me that way before. It gave me power.

PS... None of it was true, but for status I was a tough talker back then. I've mellowed a lot. Adding fat and losing muscle accounted for a lot of that mellowing.

I think most people were praying for you for the same reason we pray for all our troops - because you’re in a foreign country, fighting against people who want to kill you. A little help from upstairs is always welcome.

This leads to the discussion of - what about all those young men who were killed; were people not praying for them then? These are questions we will never be able to answer in this realm, and are way beyond my pay grade.

I’ll just leave it at - I am happy to have people pray for me. Even if one doesn’t believe in prayer, it just shows that someone is thinking of you and asking for good things (health, protection, blessings) on your behalf. I’ll take it. 🙂

In our Catholic church there were prayers for our troops fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. We prayed for our troops , they were out there in dangerous territory following orders to accomplish their objective.

In the context of what you are talking about I agree and I may not be able to explain it but I will try. In the context I'm talking about, it was not about caring about me it was a way of saying "Hey, you are a sinner and I want to save you from yourself. I am in a position to have gods ear and I am praying that you become more like me. Other than that I wouldn't pick you up if I saw you fallen on the road and won't until you agree to think like I do". Not to different than how this country is becoming now. I know that is difficult to understand, but that is the way it was. They didn't care about me at all, they felt that if they could save a lost soul they would benefit by it. I was told that directly by one of the prayer listers.

It is far different than your auntie praying for you. That was because she really cared about and loved you and was not trying to set herself up for a good afterlife. You'll have to trust me on this one. I was there and experienced it. They assumed that I was a sinner because of my demeanor and what they saw as my outwardly seeming lack of any spirituality. We weren't there to make that type of judgement. It was a war, we were in it and even if we didn't stand out in the jungle directly shooting people, we did support and enable those that did that they would have what they needed to, in this case, neutralize them. We were and are all guilty of that and to think, even for a minute that being part of that ignoring of one of the major commandments gave any of us gods ear just seemed foolish.

We were told that we were there to save these people from the enemy of freedom. We were not, but we didn't know that at the time and since they were more than willing to kill us we had two choices, let them kill us or shoot back. Great choice, huh! How many people clearly knew that the infamous Vietcong were South Vietnam people? The very group that we were attempting to force to be like us against the North Vietnamese.

Sorry, for the lengthy explanation, but I just wanted to let you know the difference between people praying for you and praying about you. I also realize that this all happened over a half century ago, but you have to know that in spite of time, it still stings me when I think about it.

I think all groups involved in the Vietnam conflict had many praying for them. I remember working with a senior citizen originally from Cuba whose name was Enrique years ago. He was a great guy. He told me in the late 1960s he made multiple trips with his boat crew from Havana to Vietnam several times a year. I asked him what was his role. Enrique replied Cuba was supplying arms to the North Vietnamese to fight the Americans.
