Mike is the Irish one. The married part of my hyphenated last name is very Irish. The maiden part (S) is very Ukrainian … although Polish people often try to tell me it’s also Polish. Shrug.

Anyway, we have barbecued three days running, and are swimming in leftovers. Today’s meal will be clean out the fridge day. Steak, ribs, roasted chicken.

Enjoy your corned beef though. I love that stuff!
I am 47% Scotish
1 % irish
33% England & Northwestern Europe
14% Germanic Europe with Wales, Sweden Denmark and Finland thrown in

I'm deep into muttness. When I was growing up my grandparents on my fathers side always said that we were of German decent. They said that the spelling of our name was slightly altered from German to English during WWI because they didn't want to be labeled as German. From that original setup the family apparently was fairly randy because we then became German, French and smidgeon of American Indian. It wasn't hard to see the native American part because my grandmother had a very distinct nose shape the was identified as Native. However, on the male side of the family, based on noses, they might have been what was thought of as a stereotypical German Jew. My mother was pretty much all French, but all the records were lost in a fire and her father was adopted by the very English named family. But everyone in that family spoke French. So not sure about those.

So anyway, I did a genealogy project a few years back and found out that my Fathers surname was connected to a family the came to America from London. They had received a land grant for 100 acres from the King someplace just north of Boston in the late 1600's. They arrived here with three young boys to farm. According to the report he died about 6 months after they arrived and left his wife and three boys with pretty much nothing. She wasn't able to own the land because, she was female (imagine that) and the boys were to young. It didn't say what the did or were they lived to survive, but they did note that 20 years later she was granted a 1 acre spot, probably part of the same original 100 acre location. One of the sons eventually headed further north to Northern Mass., then New Hampshire and eventually in upper New York state where I eventually joined the clan. There was no record at all about the Native American connection as would be expected. From what they could tell I am a large portion of English and no German at all. Blimey!

My mothers family was a little easier, but again most of the records were lost in a fire at the State Capital in Albany in the early 1900'. What we did know was that they were mostly from Quebec. I was unable to trace it back any further then the generation that came down to the states or perhaps knowing how thing happened back then when they did the surveying for the border there is a good chance that the states went up to them.

You sure can! If you hustle to EWR you can catch tonight’s flight. I’ll pick you up in Dublin in the am. 😁

We’re headed to Galway on Monday to visit my aunt, if you want to hang for a couple days. 😉. I’ll definitely post some pics from Galway, it’s my favourite city in Ireland.

In 2012 my family took the train from Gort to Galway. I had pre arranged a Galway walking tour from a local guide. He was excellent. It was well worth it.
