Jennifer, when there's hard ice on top of the snow, I've used a metal spade to break up some of the ice first. Then, the snow is easier to shovel out, with a standard snow shovel. (Saves breaking a snow shovel.) Just a suggestion for Mike. The snow/ice combo is so hard and crunchy that Mike has broken two shovels today. He’s also hurt his back … which he can’t just replace at Canadian Tire.
I put a link below (the spade is similar to one I bought at Home Depot years ago. It was a different brand, but basically the same thing.) Can also be used in warmer seasons for digging in ground, for gardens, if you have one of those at your house.

12-Gauge Edging / Planting Spade - Bully Tools, Inc.
The double-duty 12-Gauge Edging/Planting Spade by Bully Tools is made to cut through sod, but also trenching, digging, weeding, or other landscaping uses.
