Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

Never even heard of field day. We didn't have anything like that in my school. Last day of school, we would clear out our desks, turn in books to the teacher, etc. No food either. It was always just a half day, prior to summer vacation break.

We never had field day when we were in school. Our current field day isn't track & field events. We call it Spirit Day, and it consists of love of inflatable bouncy houses. Some are big slides, some are obstacle courses. There are a couple different stations that aren't bouncy houses like water relays, or yard games. It's my favorite day of the year. And yes, I absolutely smoke my first graders in the obstacles courses.

That sounds like fun. If they'd had stuff like hoola hoop contests, I'd have taken first every time. I was really good at hoola hoop!

The stuff I was good at was the stuff they didn't offer a lot of in school and if they did, it was voluntary, and the stuff I was terrible at was the stuff that was forced. I would have rocked singing competitions! But things like swing choir weren't mandatory. If you are going to force athletics, you should also force creative persuits. Or better yet, make it all by choice so everyone is happy and no one is humiliated!

I lived in a city that bordered on Lake Champlain. We used to have a field day just before the last day where just about the whole elementary school was transported to our local beach for a day of fun and a cookout.

I attended Catholic schools so we were accompanied by a group of Nuns. It was fun to watch them dressed in black trying to maneuver the sand of the beach in their granny shoes and seeing them trying to avoid getting any dirty Habits. My recollection of the nuns was that deodorant was apparently some sort of sin so it was seldom used. Heavy sweating in the sun with those black outfits didn't help that situation.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
It sounds as if your Track (and/or Field) Days were all about fun. Ours were competitive. The top two performers in each event would then move on to the City Finals, and then hopefully the Provincials.

The Track and Field meet was part of the Phys Ed curriculum, and never occurred as a part of the end of year festivities. The end of year fun day was literally called “Fun Day”.

My two favorite activities in Physical Education Class were Floor Hockey and Dodgeball.
Volleyball was fun too.

I loved floor hockey as well. I'm a hockey fan in general. But we were allowed to get away with a little dirty play. No one really expected any dirty play from me, so I was able to settle some scores and play it off like it was an accident. A little passive aggressive of me perhaps. But at the end of the unit, we were able to tell which girls had gotten some pay back by the bruises on their legs. I was pretty much bruise free.

That was an interesting candid admission from a school teacher. Who woulda thunk it ? 🤔 ;)

We didn’t do floor hockey but I would have loved it. My favorite was Safety Town. They turned the gym into a little town with roads, traffic lights, etc. and we sat on little scooters and zipped around.

Did you all play Red Rover? Another good one. 🤣
Did you guys do testing prior to the field day to see which events you would do? We had to do all sorts of sprints and long distance, and things like throwing a softball and doing the jumps to practice, teach us technique, and then after the PE teacher compiled all our results he told us which events we would be best at. It was mostly our own choice, but if they didn't have enough people sign up for one event, but too many for another, they'd take the people who weren't as good at the event with too many and make them do the one where they were short. I always signed up for sprints even though my times were better for long distance because I HATED running and just wanted to get it over with. It whatever was easiest and took the least amount of time. I think one year, they forced me to run the 400. Ugh. And once you got into 5th and 6th grade, it wasn't just our school....it was ALL the elementary schools in the whole district. I think that's the one where I had to run the 400. And I think I was also forced to do shotput in that one too, because there weren't enough girls who signed up for it.

We just did what we wanted. We also had somewhere around 600 kids in each elementary school (K-6) so if you didn’t want to participate you didn’t have to. But we all went full force like Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom.

Thank you sir. You were an inspiration.
I watched the first two episodes of the new Obi-Wan series. I thought they were really good. I know the prequels get dragged a lot, but they were a huge part of my childhood, so it's nice to see some of the expanded universe come from the prequels.
It was good to see Temeura Morrison again.

Happy Saturday everyone! I'm seeking some posters here who will be my sounding board re. when I can relax my cautious approach in my home w/ my recovering tested-positive-for-covid daughter. My 20 year old daughter had a fever and a cough Thursday. She woke up Friday morning and the fever was gone and it never returned. Even so, early that morning she went to the clinic and got tested. She tested positive. Since Thurs. night she has been quarantined in her room. I bring her meals to her...I set it outside her door. When she is done eating I come to the outside of her door wearing a mask and rubber gloves. I grab the tray with my gloved hands and keep the gloves on as I wash her dirty dishes.
Starting tomorrow....which will be Day 4, do you think I can ease my cautionary approach? She isn't coughing anymore and fever free.
Please share your thoughts on my 20 year old daughter and also on my role as well. Thank you!
