This week is Theme Week in my classroom. I like to take one of the last weeks of school and just have fun with the kids, to celebrate all of their hard work from the year.

Monday was Nature Day. We went outside and used four of our five senses to write adjectives about nature. The one we did not use was taste. For obvious reasons. All three of our schools are also on the same block, and just up the hill is the high school. We walked past the high school to our school arboretum. We took a nature walk and had fun playing in a big, open area of trees in the woods. There is a little shelter made of logs that someone made at some point that the kids like to play in.

Today was Lemonade Day. We made yellow and pink lemonade, taste tested them, and did activities with it. We collected data on each student's favorite kind, made a tally chart, and ultimately a bar graph. Then we compared the data. We identified words about lemonade and sorted them into nouns, adjectives, and verbs. I had a training at District Office this afternoon, so the sub continued doing different lemonade activities.

Tomorrow is Disney Day. We will start the day by making Olaf crowns. We'll do a directed drawing of the Aliens from Toy Story. We'll take a virtual field trip to Disney World. I also have some mystery pictures of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy. They are a number grid, and each number has a color. They work their way through each number to reveal the mystery picture. If we have extra time, it will probably be a Disney movie. Maybe Aladdin?

Thursday is Water Day. We will do several water experiments, such as testing if different objects sink or float, transferring water from one cup to another using paper towels and food coloring, and sticking pencils in a bag full of water. Students will get to use water color paints to paint an ocean scene. They will also do a STEM activity where they get to flip water bottles with different volumes and try to see which one lands standing up most often. If we have time, we will take virtual field trips to the Seattle Aquarium and maybe go on a virtual Shark Dive.

Friday is Beach Day. Student can wear beach clothes like tank tops, shorts, and flip flops to school. They can also bring a beach towel to work on throughout the day. I have different beach activities involving parts of speech, place value, addition/subtraction, spelling, etc. We'll do another directed drawing. We will also play some games with beach balls.

I love this week. It's my favorite week of the year. And then next week we have Spirit Day where our school gets bouncy houses and obstacle courses for students to play in for a couple hours. In the afternoon I think I might have Splash Day and have my kids play water games. Then we take a trip to a nearby park on Wednesday. Next Thursday will probably just be clean up day, and then next Friday is our last day, and it's a half day for students.

What was the difference between the pink lemonade and the regular lemonade. Did you add a pink fruit (or pink fruit concentrate), or did you add food dye?

You have the BEST ideas for your students! In years to come, they'll look back on all this with fond memories of these activities, and their favorite teacher. :)

The difference is one was regular lemonade mix and the other was pink lemonade mix. I'm not really sure what pink lemonade is.

Aw man, why didn't I have YOU for a teacher in elementary school? We always had track and field day in the last week, which was torture. Yes, let's wait until the hottest part of the school year and make the kids run a lot. Not fun!

I LOVED field day!!!
Honestly, most kids in our school did, too, but I HATED it. I'm not at all athletic, I always came in close to last if not last. I hated running, so it wasn't fun to something I wasn't good at and get nothing out of it except sunburn and dehydration. And they always gave us sack lunches with either a ham or balogna sandwich, neither of which I would eat. It was just a miserable day for me all around.

Me too! You had to enter 5 events - 3 Track, 2 Field, and I would come home with 3 or 4 first place ribbons, and 1 or 2 second place ribbons.

My classmate Rosa F was 6 inches taller than me, so she would enter (and win) the (running) long jump and I would win the standing broad jump; and we were 50/50 in high jump.

I was a short distance sprinter - 60, 100, 200m. Rosa took a little longer to get going, so she entered the 200, 400, and 800m. She couldn’t catch me in the 60 or 100, but some years I would run out of steam just as she was hitting her stride in the 200m.

PB&J only. Ham and bologna would have spoiled in the hot sun. 🤮

Me and my best friend used to ROCK the 3 legged race. It was hilarious too because she was at least a foot taller than me but - as you well already know - I have a VERY long stride so I would just match hers and we would all out SPRINT to the finish line. The parents found it quite entertaining.

My brother Terry and I could 3-legged race as fast as a regular runner. Sadly, that wasn’t an event at our Track and Field meets.

I came home with a lot of "Participant" ribbons. "Participant" ribbons were kind of like "LOSER" badges in my school.

Sounds to me like a lot of sweaty activity.
