Good hiking boots have nothing to do with age. I had my first pair in my late 20s. I've always had hiking boots since then for trails. It's a safety issue--and they really hold your ankles in a good solid position--which in turn--helps to stabilize your knees. (I've put some decent money into quality hiking boots -- mine are Asolo, from Italy.)

My old pair of Asolo's just fell apart before our Yellowstone trip this year (they were 13 yrs old...so no fault with the boots). My mom got a pair just like them for hiking around Iceland. I opted for a pair of Merrell boots this time b/c they were on sale. I liked them, but missed the feel of the Asolo boots.

You're correct - that is the Virginia cascades. More waterfall pictures coming later tonight after we eat.
parking at some of the major places has been a headache. In fact we've yet to see the Grand Prismatic because it's always too crowded to get a parking spot. This morning we were there by 8:30 and it was already packed. We'll get there yet, but it's quite aggravating. Everything else has been great - I'm loving that we're not sticking to any particular schedule - makes it so much more enjoyable.

I actually left my hiking boots at home because they didn't fit in the suitcase. Big mistake, although my sneakers do have a lot of support to them.

Yay!!! I was sad that we didn't get much time to see falls this trip. I was hoping we'd have time to make it to Undine and Wraith, but it just didn't happen. So many pretty falls in the park. Can't wait to see which ones you visited!
We had an awful time parking at Grand Prismatic. A bus driver informed us that lot enlargement was approved for Grand Prismatic, but it'll probably be another 5 years before it happens and it's only supposed to add a handful of spots. We planned out our first stop of the day strictly because of parking issues, but the rest was kind of a do whatever we're up for doing. It's kind of nice just driving and finding random spots to explore.

OK - I'm back. We did a variety of things today, from geysers and hot springs, to cascading waterfalls then on to Yellowstone Lake where we had a picnic lunch, then on to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and finally back to the Old Faithful Inn where we sipped wine on the upper patio while watching Old Faithful do her thing. Another awesome day - enjoy!

Waiting for DH to get ready to head out this morning. We're planning to just do a few things at the park today, then do laundry in town this afternoon. The mornings have been pretty chilly high 20's to mid 30's, but the afternoons are quite comfortable, so we've been layering clothes which is fine unless you tend to spill coffee or mustard or whatever on entire layers... anyway, no biggie plans so we'll leave when we leave.

My daughter started watching @JenniferS's favourite show: Friends. Her observations so far (she is at the start of Season 3):
- Richard & Monica's relationship is gross. "He's just SOOOO old". Clearly she doesn't have an affinity for him from his Magnum PI days.
- Janice is "the BEST". She's sad Chandler and Janice broke up because she's going to miss her. I laughed. She asked if they get back together. I laughed more.

Back to the cabin for dinner, actually leftover lunch, and chillin' on the swing. Had a great day at the park - actually saw Steamboat Geyser erupt. It's the biggest geyser in the country maybe the world?), but because it doesn't erupt on a regular basis, it's not as famous as Old Faithful. Anyway we saw it steaming on the drive in, so we parked the car and quickly hit the trail and got there just in time. It was so neat!!!
From there we drove around and saw some really pretty waterfalls:
We ate lunch at the hotel by Mammoth Springs - it was tasty but too much food for lunch, so I have half of it saved for dinner tonight. When we left the hotel, a herd of elk made their way across the surrounding streets:

Just a few random wildlife pictures today:
There are random bison on nearly every road we've been on, so I've resolved to stop taking pictures of them all, but I couldn't resist this pair with the baby:
a cool antelope was grazing with a bison herd:
Some random elk, who seem to be everywhere...
and one who decided to hide behind a sign - bet you can't see him!
