We had a pretty great day today. We had plans to drive up to Tarpon Springs for the day once we got the dog and cats settled, but a few things came up before we could leave so we didn't get going til around 11. As we pulled out onto the road, we saw this visitor on a neighbor's lawn:
There are a few wild ones around here, but we hadn't seen them yet this trip.
The eagle's nest that we visited last night is not far from where we pick up the highway so we decided to make a quick visit. We noticed a motor bike parked where we usually stop and a man there taking pictures, so we pulled in next to him. It turns out that he works as a volunteer for the Fish and Wildlife Department here, mapping and recording the local nests, and takes a lot of eagle pictures in his spare time. He showed us some that he had downloaded to his phone, and they were absolutely incredible. We talked about the various nests we've visited and he was full of interesting information about them. Then, as we were talking I spotted this out of the corner of my eye:
It circled around us several times, so our new friend took several pictures, all of them better than this. Eventually it flew to a tree across the street, so we all drove over there to get a better view:
The tree overlooks a small retention pond where we saw this Sand Hill Crane sitting in a nest
while her mate kept an eye on us on the shore.
So we did eventually get to Tarpon Springs for a late but yummy lunch and a little shopping. We couldn't stay too long there since we had arranged to take the kids for a while to make Mother's day gifts, so we headed home and found that same peacock on another neighbor's lawn.
