Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

So weird day today. It started off normal. I did my pre-student teaching in the morning, and had class at noon. Then we went to the library to look for books for a project. After we left the library, there were a bunch of people standing outside a building. We asked what everyone was doing. They said a building had been evacuated, and they were told to get away from it. Being curious, me and a couple of friends stood around and wanted to see what was going on. Then came a report of a firearm in the building. Still, there was no real police presence or anything. There was one girl in an orange jacket kind of blocking people off. Nothing more. Then a professor walked by, and someone asked what was happening. She said "there's an active shooter." So once we heard that, my friends and I decided to leave the area. I went to the student center where some of my other friends were. I was talking to them, and then over the speakers someone said "_________ building has been closed due to reports of a firearm. Please do not go near this building." That was all. Then a little bit later they came back over the speakers and said, "Campus is closing immediately for the remainder of the day due to safety concerns." Everyone then left campus, as it was being evacuated. It's kind of crazy how many people are on campus at once. So many people walking and trying to drive away. My car was across campus and near the building with the potential active shooter, so I got a ride home from a friend. Then one of my friends messaged me saying apparently someone was seen walking into a bathroom with a rifle.

Due to the lack of police/security present, I don't think it was a truly dangerous situation, but you never know. They're still in the process of figuring it out now.

Wow...

That is...confusing?? o_O Why would everyone be standing around if there was an "active shooter"

I'm not sure. Nobody really told us anything about the situation. They just said to get away from the building. The person in orange jacket was a student worker. I saw no police, no faculty, nothing. We never got confirmation on whether there was a shooter, or what. The first official thing we heard from the university was probably 15-20 minutes after the building was evacuated. And all we heard was there was a report of a firearm. No reports of anybody holding a firearm, just a report of a firearm. That's really the only official information the university has given us. Everything else has just been word of mouth.

Interesting in hearing how it plays out...

The building is located on a corner, and is literally one sidewalk width from the street. We were able to drive right next to the building. I saw one police officer. No other form of law enforcement.

Just got an email from campus saying students and staff who left personal items in the building may not return to the building to get them. So I guess it is taken care of?

My guess is it was just some idiot who thought it would be funny. Or maybe he brought it to a class for a project? No clue. But at least I don't have my 3 hour night class!

Maybe someone was carrying a broom and someone mistook it for a rifle...

I'm eager to see the response from the university.

I was off from work today, so hopped on here a bit earlier than usual. Glad I did. I just wanted to say that you did the right thing by leaving, and I was relieved to hear that you took a ride with a friend, instead of getting your own car near the building in question.

Being inconvenienced is a minor trade-off for your own safety.

Watching a live news conference now - apparently the witness heard a clicking sound coming from a stall of a bathroom, like a gun would click, then he thought he saw a barrel of an AK-47. Nobody has been caught. Nothing has really been accomplished.

Probably a stupid question, but are there security cameras around the school? Maybe someone suspicious might show up on one.

I'm not exactly sure, but from what I no they do not have security cameras in that building. Our local high school does, but not the university. Seems weird to me.
