Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

In baseball there can be a conflict of interest even in betting on your own team to win a game. With pitching decisions, what's best for winning today's game may not be best for winning tomorrow's or the next day's or even for a player's health.
Pitching decisions? Throw the ball/don't throw the ball. !!!

Seriously isn't the object of the game to win? What game decision today is going to affect the outcome of a future game? (barring a personal injury?)

Butterfly effect?

Here's what Tom Boswell the baseball writer says about it: "Rose moans that he always bet on the Reds to win. So what? He could have burned up his bullpen three nights in a row to win bets, then not gambled the next night, knowing his Reds were shorthanded. In what universe is that not crooked?"

Catching is the most draining regular position, and managers tend to give their star catchers a day off on Sunday afternoon games. For a team like the Cardinals with a huge quality difference in starting and backup catchers this can affect the betting lines. A manager might be tempted to take advantage of the more favorable betting line by using his starting catcher in the Sunday afternoon game even if it's in the team's interest to rest him then.

I could think of other examples but I'm sure I'm boring non-baseball fans enough already.

If he doesn't gamble then he has no stake in the game anymore than any other player on the team, and they all have the desire to win.

I'm just not following this. But then again, I've never been a big softball fan.

If he bet the same amount every game they played, and always picked the Reds to win, then there'd be no conflict of interest.

I can't feel bad for Pete Rose and here's why:

He knew the punishment for betting on baseball was a lifetime ban from the game of baseball.

He bet on baseball.

If he weren't such an accomplished player we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Despite what some people may say, rules are NOT meant to be broken.

Does that mean if I bet on a baseball game that I can never go to a baseball game again.

Yes. Yes it does. :p

Do the same rules apply to Softball?

Yes - yes it does. I've been betting on basketball for YEARS!! :D

I need to start betting on tennis matches apparently.
I wish I had known that yesterday. Today I have to go to the Soccer games of two of my grandchildren. Both in the same park at two different fields at approximately the same time. (they start within a half hour of each other) I wouldn't go so far as to say that I hate Soccer, but, it does manage to bore me close to death.
Oh, look they are running up the field, no wait, they are running back again, no, no.. they are going back the other way again, and so on and so on! What I will say is that it is truly football.

There should have been a notice placed someplace that this parenting thing just never ends until you do. If I knew about this 42 years ago, I might very well have abstained.
Maybe not.. I was quite "randy" in those days.

Your grandchildren need to incorporate the fake injury acting moments the professional players use. A bit of theatrics might make it more interesting.

I don't see many grandparents at kids' soccer games. Other grandparents will just get mad at you for raising the bar. You should stay home and watch the end of the golf tournament.
