We have strip malls every mile or so (5 - 6 stores in a row - not to be confused with establishments that attract an unsavory element) and they basically each have a nail salon, a pizza place, a chinese take-out restaurant (or more recently a burrito bar) and a liquor store. And in between each of them is a 7-11. We have - no joke - 5 real and 1 fake 7-11's within 2 miles of my house.
I live near a road that pretty much has a 7-11 every mile. I don't have many strip malls in my town actually except for one that is exactly what you described. 15 minutes south of me though there is one every block with every chain restaurant and big box store there is. It's a traffic nightmare.

There are at least 15 (maybe 20) Starbucks within a mile of where I work.
Both my normal office and the NYC office I sometimes have to go into are next to a Starbucks. I'm sure there are 20 within a mile of that NYC office as well.

Where I live only has one Starbucks in a really expensive fashion strip mall and to get there I pass through my town's Main St. district which has an independent coffee shop that is much better.

Pretty much I have a street of really good local businesses between me and all the chains. Its made me a bit of a snob when it comes to food.

I believe it's experimental evidence.

I saw the experiment actually...

In the northeast suburbs you could launch a catapult full of rocks in any direction and have a 70% chance of hitting a Dunkin Donuts.

A friend of mine tried to give directions once by telling someone to "make a right at the 7-11". I told her she needs to be WAY more specific than that (the person was going to pass 6 7-11s before the one they needed to turn at.)

So I am sitting at Pep boys with a bunch of degenerates waiting for my inspection. One guy keeps yelling that his car isn't done and he was here first. One guy is talking LOUDLY on the phone. And there's some weird show on the TV where people are debating if Jesus would have been a Democrat or Republican. I kid you not. I feel like any minute Meg is going to fly in on a winged pig and I am going to realize this is a dream.
