Quite.

The kid and I chatted for an hour tonight, reading Lion Witch and Wardrobe together (something we'll continue on the trip, I've got Prince Caspian and Dawn Treader packed with me, bought them today, just in case we finish it on our trip, but I doubt we will...probably won't be doing too much reading! But, we could both get sick like we did last trip! <shrug>...)

She knows she is coming to visit with me, but she thinks she's coming here to Atlanta. Since she reads at a 5th grade level now (according to her school system, which...I question their judgement in that matter, but <shrug>)...anyhow, she knows what is "in" Orlando, so keeping WDW a secret all the way to Magical Express as I have for previous trips will be difficult...

But, she still has no idea about the cruise!

Work has been supportive. I was told I can (and should) expense my internet cost on the cruise, which is a nice little "bonus" for the trip...

But, yes, getting quite excited.
What are the exact dates of your trip?

EDIT-- and by exact I mean when do you leave?

That's awesome! I love to surprise people.

Did you read the Magician's Nephew with her yet?
No, no...that's later in the series, as I recall. I've actually never read the whole series, just the first two, so I'm going off publication dates for the "order"...

It was written later, but it's kind of the prequel to the others. I enjoyed it very much.
Has she seen the movie?
Yes. All of them. I'm trying to work her into Asimov (cunning, I know) when she gets a bit older in the tween years...though, knowing her personality (at least at this stage) I suspect she'll probably be more into Dragonriders of Pern...

But, I'd really love to introduce her to Asimov...and then Michener...I'm biding the years.

She'll get to an age soon enough where she'll just have her own interests no matter what. My daughter loved the classics, and still is a big Jane Austen fan, but after about 5th grade, she didn't want to be told what to read. I still maintained veto power, but she chose what interested her. My son on the other hand really never strayed far from Sci-fi, although he loves historical readings too, mostly WWII stuff.

I'll gauge her interest in it...we did a bunch of Roald Dahl books, and then switched to the lighter Judy Blume books (she loves the Beezus and Ramona books, especially since she has a little sister who is around Ramona's age and she is around Beezus's age in the books...)

For our reading time, I think I may do a Jules Verne next...not really sure. I figure we'll give this series a go for a bit and see how she reacts. I recall getting bored with it by the middle of the second book or so when I was around her age...

As I recall, a couple of them are sleepers, but then it picks back up again. If she's seen the movies, she'll probably enjoy the books more. I used the use The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as the basis for a final project in my sixth grade Bible class. It really amazed me how many kids didn't "get" the obvious Biblical parallels in the book, but would really "understand" it after watching the movie in class.

My kid has been going through confirmation classes...she picked up on it quite quickly, which I found amusing.

I had a few themes for them to choose from to follow through the story, and it was so funny to see the little light bulbs going off when they'd notice something from one of those themes. That was my favorite assignment with them (created by yours truly); they really had to stop and think and pay attention to details. I think there are way too many movies now that just wow them with special effects without any reasoning processes involved.
