By the time I log on here after work, I'm often hours beyond some interesting discussions here on the Saget thread. But I wanted to comment about the excitement of practical gifts, and sometimes even recycled gifts, that can be outstanding.
Years ago my father battled Alzheimer's. He no longer could go out to a store, because he'd get lost and wander away. So, he was frustrated staying home, but wanted to find me a gift for my birthday. He looked in closets and boxes all over the house, and found an old model train locomotive and coal car. (I believe his father had given it to him when he was a kid.) He somehow remembered that I liked trains, and he gave them to me, saying it was the best he could do for my birthday present. To this day, it is the most cherished present I have ever received.
