When you drive, what's stopping you?

The last time I drove, I stopped to sleep in the car, and to find out what South of the Border was.

Is there anywhere you have to stop because of tradition, or just because it caught your eye?

And maybe someone can tell me what Cafe Risque is.

We usually drive on our February trips.Coming from Western NY in February is a "crap-shoot", as far as weather here goes, but we've had good luck so far...
If we leave as soon as my wife gets home from school the friday before (she's a teacher), we hit the road for about 6 hrs of driving and stop at the Summersville, WV Comfort Inn on Rt 19 - a really, really nice one, at that!!! If we leave a day later, we drive to Orangeburg, SC, and spend the night. As far as any particular "stops" for meals or to stretch, we just play it by ear...We had spent aug 1-12 at WDW, so we're missing the magic. But, we've began the planning for our annual February trip. People we know think we're crazy to drive, but we absolutely love it! It's nice to know that so many other people do the drive, as well!

We haven't driven down since 2001. While heading down on I-75 in Georgia there is a flea market with a giant peach perched atop a high pole. Always a fun photo spot. Also near the Florida/Georgia border there is a rest stop that has an alligator pen in the back. And of course, when driving through Tennesee on I-24 there is the abundance of "See Ruby Falls" and "Fireworks" billboards.

Anyway..when we were little we always stopped at Smokeys Bar-B-Q in Pensacola..and at The Okahumpka (I think that is spelled right..;) )Travel Plaza..now we just stop to use the restrooms and maybe pick up a bite through the drive thru.

We like getting there as quick as possible..:D

We're driving on our February trip this year too. We used to drive it every summer, but for the past 7 years we've flown in February instead.

Here's hoping the weather cooperates!

Every year for the past 13 years we (wife & I) drive from North Jersey to WDW. We usually drive down the 2nd Saturday in July. Just jump on 95, stay overnight in Santee, SC. Get up on Sunday, make a stop at the Florida welcome Station and usually get to WDW around 1:00. We have taken our dog every year for the past 8 years. However, we will be driving down in May of 08. This time with the pooch and our twin sons that will be 1 1/2 years old by that time. Should make for an interesting trip:lol:

So sad:( . I find it odd that in 2004 and 2005 the sign says, "See Live Sharks" then in 2006 it's just "See Sharks." Did they have them taxidermied or something?

Actually . . .

For the first few years, we would drive by the sign saying: 13 FOOT GATOR and I always thought it would be fun to stop and see.

We finally stopped and realized (and I think I may have been the first journalist to break the story here in my 2004 trip report: http://home.comcast.net/~ghoover/disney 2004 web/index2004.htm ) that the 13 foot gator was dead and stuffed.

I think that they also bragged about a 21 foot shark (also dead and stuffed). But they also had "live sharks" ( a few tiny ones swimming around in a tank).

At first I was upset that the signs were so misleading, but then it became a lot of fun, and I always made a point of stopping.

We usually leave early enough to stop for a few hours at a friend's house a few hours into our trip to WDW. Then it's shift driving/sleeping all the way!!! Only stop for food and potty breaks. :)
We drove to DL a few years ago (from Memphis, TN). We made it back from Vegas on the way home in like 24/25 hrs. That was the BEST road trip ever!!!

My tip for everyone... sleep when you need to and eat when you need to. Or you'll wind up at mile marker 141 in Alburqurqe calling 911 cause your body is in shock! Those EMTs were super nice, though. Oh and the Rt. 66 Casino is so cool!

Tacky to be sure, but SO much fun when I was a kid, driving the long route between Florida and PA/NJ/NY in the summers (or back.) For about a hundred miles out in both directions, there are signs. Funny, stupid, campy signs. It's terribly entertaining since much of I-95 looks the same.

You can see pictures of the billboards here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_of_the_Border_(attraction)

(Ironically, I don't think we ever stopped. But I quite looked forward to the billboards!)
-m

We always look for the billboards! :ROFLOL:

There are fewer now than there were just 5 years ago though. We have to stop and get something little, its tradition.

And 2 years a go I bought a booklet (they sell them) of all the billboards thru the years.

I always love your trip reports. I have read the "The Bacon Incident" from your 2006 report at least a dozen times and each time I have tears coming out of my eyes from laughing so hard. The travel channel needs to offer you your own show.

Thanks:eek: . I'm glad you enjoy them.

I don't know if you remember last year when we found the ants tracing the shape of a pizza box,

Pizza%20Box.jpg

but this year, Ryan wants to get some sugar packets and see if we can make a "hidden mickey" out of ants.
