What was the big deal with the Adventurers Club?

Occasionally on these boards I hear people talk about how great the Adventurers Club at Pleasure Island was. Personally I never went once, and so I need for those who remember it and for those who loved it to tell me what was so great about it. Also, if you went and didn't like it, why not?

Was it a night club? Was it a restaurant? Was it a dinner theater type of place?

What happened at the Adventurers Club on a given night? And why did people (or you) go over and over again?

I'll say it was a "Night Club Theatre" type of place. Over the course of an evening there were a series of skits and performances in various rooms. You could move into whichever room was 'active' or remain in the central bar area [where some performance pieces also took place].

As to the specific order of shows and what was involved, I'll leave that to the more experienced among us. I only went twice and thoroughly enjoyed myself on both occasions!

Kungaloosh!

From what I understand, you just had to experience it for yourself. I never personally went to it either but I did want to go but it just never materialized before it closed.

It was a live action comedy club with audience participation. The actors played characters and performed skits in different rooms and levels.
The show was different everytime because a lot of things were ad-libbed. It was fun to see the familiar characters doing different skits. That is why there were so many repeat visitors.

Yes

Well, not a restaurant - but alcohol is a food :)

It was loosely origanzied sketch comedy, set in a circa 1940's (did I get the year right) club for world adventurers. Come to think of it, I wonder if Joe Rhode is a member of the Explorers Club. Anyhow. by loosely, I mean that while there was a script for the sketches and set times for them, very often the sketches were - I would say - 35% improv.

Part of the attraction were the actors, and the other part were the audience members, who very often were like another actor in the skit, rolling along with the improv, making comments, and working with the actors to make a complete performance.

It was just a very fun place.

It was a Night Club/Bar that had 1930's adventurers themed improv comedy. (Think a bar where indiana jones might hang out)

It was fun, the same general shows but what truly made it special was the cast and the different interpretations that the characters would take from night to night.

I enjoyed it a lot. It was fun. Drank with a lot of tourists. A LOT. Met some brief lady friends too.

I never got a chance to go. :( But I gather the atmosphere coupled with the cast members/show are what made it so popular.

Do a search on YouTube. While many videos I've found on there tend to be a "you had to be there" kind of thing for them to be funny, occasionally you'll find some that show the true heart of what the AC was. (Well, still is...kinda...)

I'd look for some examples, but it's late and I should be in bed...

Well, maybe Indiana Jones' nerdy tagalong cousin....

Here is your Wiki summary:

plenty of youtube postings, althought most would strike the uninitiated as a bit confusing.

I had read so much about it on here that I felt the need to go atleast once. Well, I suppose it was not the place to try when I was with a few friends that wanted to be at PI to drink and dance.... They all gave me the 'What (TF) are you thinking' faces.

Needless to say, my brother and his girlfriend HATE getting called out in stuff like that. They were the target. We only stayed for one room. I thought it was fun, but I myself was also there to drink and be merry and I needed a refill before the skit was halfway done!:lookaroun

With time, you learn to properly stock up and pace yourself!

I'm not much for active participation either...but I'm convinced that the performers can smell that....and it acts like a magnet....

While I've never operated at near as high a level as actors in the Adventurer's Club, I have performed in a couple of audience participation shows and I can say this: "We can" and "it does."

Sorry. :)
