What is an EMO?

I don't really see how people can be a genre of music. lol. I know that people go around saying they're emo, but the proper term is Scene Kid. I always have to correct people because it drives me nuts, I hear a kid say "hey, I'm emo." So I then reply, "no you're not, you can't be a genre of music. You are a Scene Kid." lol

Maybe its just me, but for some reason the term "Scenester" or "Scene Kid" gets to me more than "emo kid". Here, to be a "Scenester" you go to alot of shows and everything you do has to fit in with the "scene". Band shirts, and constantly quoting songs. And the concerts cant be anyone that is on a big label, they HAVE to be the shows that go on every Friday at the Legion Hall. Its almost like being an emo teenybopper.

I hate labels.

But in this case, the style of music has created a style(?) of person. People ARE emo. Emo is different from a scenester. I can act like a scenester and listen to scenester music but not go to the scenester shows. What does that make me? Well not me, but that type of person.

It makes them emo.

Also, if it stems from "emotional", an adjective used to describe people, why can't "emo" describe people? I constantly call people "country" and "punk", two types of music. Styles of music ARE classifications for people. It's just how the system works.

Not that I approve of them, I've just resigned to the fact that they're impossible to avoid.

Pretty much. There are just some people that feel that everyone has to have a label, no matter if they happen to be wrong. :brick:

Well, they're punk and they're music sucks (Well, they used to make some good songs like Time of Your Life)

Not punk anymore. They have sold out.
You wanna hear "good" greenday? Go listen to a copy of Kerplunk. That was made way before they went mainstream.

I've been a Green Day fan since Dookie. Was my first concert when I was a sophomore in HS :). And for those hating on their newest album American Idiot, that was the only album since Dookie that I listened all the way through and loved every bit of it. The other albums had to grow on me all the way. Plus, they couldnt stay FULL punk because everyone grows up and their newest album shows their growing in age from music. I'm sure a couple mid 30's guys singing straight punk wouldnt draw the young ones in like they did when they were younger.

Reminds me of one of my favorite South Park lines.
Stan: What do I have to do to be a nonconformist?

Goth Kid: All you have to do is look like us, think like us and listen to the same music we do and you can be a nonconformist.

 That was BEAUTIFUL.

The lead singer for Bad Religion is 41 and they are still putting out CD's. Fat Mike from NOFX and me first and the gimmie gimmies is 35. Young kids still listen to them because they are good.
Green Day isn't punk anymore because they changed their style of music to sell more records.
