What if Disney went dry......

See I’m fairly liberal, and not against people wanting to take the edge off occasionally, but what is the real need to drink drink (say, more than 2) at an amusement park? Epcot I get to an extent. The rest... They could keep it only in certain places like sit down restaurants, and that’s fine. But you really don’t need to have it at walk up snack spots and bars. It already contains a great deal of self absorbed, awful people, no need to dial that up further w alcohol at every turn.

Dry as in no alcohol! Obviously this isnt a proposal, petition, or soapbox (I enjoy a nice beer or cocktail) but how would you feel IF it did happen. The reason I ask is that over the last 5-10 years, drinking has found a way into many facets of the parks. Of course there has always been wine and beer with meals, the WS, and later Food and Wine, etc etc but this past trip around Christmas left my jaw open. I mean I like a beer and trying new craft beers whenever I can but it seemed like Epcot had a temporary beer, wine, or liquor booth every 50 yards. IMO it’s too much of a good thing and feels totally forced.
So if Disney were to reverse roles and pull alcohol from the parks, I personally wouldn’t miss it. Of course a simpler pairing back is preferred so it wouldnt be so in your face, but I could live without. I’m just curious how people would see the parks without the option to drink.
Hope everyone is off to a good weekend!

Here’s my 2 cents. I wouldn’t be devastated if the parks went dry. I’d still go and have a good time. I do enjoy a beer or two especially with a nice, relaxing dinner and especially on vacation, but if they stopped serving beer in the parks I’d just go outside for nicer, sit down dinners. That being said I don’t think a ban is either necessary or in the best interest of the parks.

That answers your initial question so I’ll take a minute to jump on my soap box. Alcohol is not evil and the vast majority of adults can partake in a drink or two without acting like fools. I grew up around a family who always had some drinks at holidays or family gatherings and my kids have seen me drink. IMHO it’s actually not a bad thing for kids to see adults drinking responsibly. Obviously someone who is wasted and stumbling or throwing up should not be around children or in the parks. Security can and should escort people like that out.

Drinking shouldn’t be necessary to have a good time but for some (a lot of) people it enhances a meal or just some time spent relaxing. It’s easy for people who don’t have any desire to drink at the parks themselves to be in favor of a flat out ban, just like its easy for someone without kids to favor a ban on strollers. If it doesn’t benefit me then get rid of it. I try to be more open minded and consider that not everyone shares my tastes and desires. I’m not saying let people do whatever they want all the time, but if it’s not directly impacting me who cares what someone else is doing. Sometimes I feel like people spend too much time watching and judging all the people around them instead of just enjoying their own time with their family and friends. Whether it’s someone who supposedly drank too much or assuming a kid is having a tantrum because it’s too late for them to be out in a park people seem to love to be critical of strangers.

I think the key for me is does it really impact my good time? Take smoking as an example. I am opposed to allowing smoking everywhere in the parks. I’m sure some smokers would enjoy that but the secondhand smoke is a problem for the rest of us. A park full of cigarette smoke would impact my good time. I have no issue with having designated smoking areas since that doesn’t impact me and allows someone else to enjoy their time. To get back to drinking, the same logic applies for me. Even if I notice a person who probably had too much to drink is that really impacting my experience? Is a person walking around World Showcase with a beer negatively impacting my good time? If there is a group of younger people who are a little loud and laughing a little too hard is that really so bad? Now I’m sure someone will reply and say that someone throwing up, urinating in public or starting a fight does impact their experience but those extreme examples are crimes or at least against the park rules. The simple solution is for Disney to perp walk belligerent drunks out of the parks. They don’t need to arrest people just kick em out. If they set a zero tolerance policy on true negative behaviors it would go a much longer way to solving the problem.

And that’s cool- I drink only on sporadic occasions, but that doesn’t mean I want it banned everywhere. However I don’t see the need to have it around every turn at places like MK, and honestly AK where you could get some over served dingus who decides to throw his beer in the tiger enclosure. Want one at a sit down restaurant with a meal? Cool. But I wouldn’t put up Pumbaa’s Hakuna Corona right outside Space Mountain where people can be idiots on a ride soon after. Epcot, not as much of a risk there. I’ve been..not exactly sober on 3 Caballeros more than once. No real harm there. But you run the risk of more injuries at more ride heavy parks.

TLDR- it’s ok the way it is, there’s no need to go all teetotaler on everyone, but they also shouldn’t pop drink stands up everywhere in pursuit of the almighty dollar, potentially in exchange of injuries, and families not thrilled with their surroundings at what is marketed and sold to people as a family experience.

The only problem there:
“Hey, you are too drunk to be in our park. So here, get out and go drive yourself home, as since you’re too drunk to be at Epcot, clearly you’re in the right mind to be responsible with not driving”

Nah, it’s called Uber.

Whether the person was told to leave or left at closing its the same problem with driving home.

If it’s a single person getting removed who may in a group.. I don’t know. I’m not going to do all the hypotheticals here and be that guy, but I think it would lend itself to an increase in drunk driving, beginning on Disney property no less. If someone is that bad, a night in the drunk tank somewhere might be best for everyone. I’d assume if someone is bad enough to be removed from a park, they’re bad enough to be taken in on a drunk and disorderly charge.

We agree on a near zero tolerance policy, just differ in ways of enforcing it.

There’s money at stake so Disney is all on it. Your typical restaurant markup on alcohol in middle America is 80%...and Disney goes well above that %, so it’s money just pouring in.

The only thing Disney is going to do is double down on alcohol. A drunken Jerry Maguire is somewhere slurring “Show me the money!”

I absolutely LOVE a cold beer with any meal but I really would not mind at all. I would be slightly disappointed if the World Showcase went dry I guess, I am not a binge drinker by any means but I do enjoy sampling different types of beers from around the world, on any vacation! :)

It's a nice add-on for me, being able to enjoy a beer with lunch or dinner in the parks, but it wouldn't diminish my overall Disney experience in the slightest if there was no alcohol available.

I fear this is coming. I wonder how much thought Disney gives to keeping Food and wine running all year round?

I’ve just read through the entire thread and can’t tell if alcohol in the parks is a problem or not.

I’ve been going to WDW twice a year for several years now, and have yet to notice an inebriated guest. I will say I have noticed more alcohol available and in some ways it feels wrong. But as I said, I’ve yet to see a problem.

People don't fight, swear or puke, when they eat, no matter what size they are, but some do when they're intoxicated. Apples and oranges.
They don't fight swear or puke when they eat? ever? really? Only when drunk do people fight, swear or puke? No one ever got angry in a restaurant and had a fight unless they were drunk? No one ever got sick? No one ever said "Holy F@#* that was the best steak i ever ate!"?I never knew...

Because DVC isn't an investment - it is a prepaid vacation club. I wouldn't vacation where I can't have a drink. Where I can't drink is called work ;)

That's not an answer to the question I asked. I'm all about the whiskey, and the whisky -make no mistake. That said, I'm also all about WDW. Can't imagine alcohol meaning so much that Disney would mean so little. YMMV, obviously.

I'd argue that it is a good thing for kids seeing adults drinking responsibly. In many of the countries represented in the World Showcase, drinking beer and wine is legal at age 16 and part of that is the fact that kids/teenagers learn what responsible drinking is with their parents -- as opposed to having this "forbidden fruit" culture around alcohol in the USA which leads to binge drinking by teenagers and young adults.

Well with DVC I go to WDW a lot. If WDW was Dry I wouldn't go to WDW as much and therefore DVC wouldn't fit my vacation style any longer. Therefore I would sell DVC and use the cash to vacation other places. I didn't say I wouldn't go to WDW if it were dry. I said I'd sell my DVC.

I totally agree. I knew a Greek guy in college (a dude actually from Greece not just a guy in a fraternity - he was also in a fraternity so I guess he was a Greek Greek guy;)) who always said the same thing. Drinking was no big deal for him since he’d been drinking at home at family gatherings since he was a teenager.

It’s only a problem if you get stuck with the bar tab at the end of the night ;)

There’s also a pretty good chance you did see an inebriated guest at WDW. Contrary to what some people seem to think not everyone who has “had a few” or even “a few too many” stumbles around puking and starting fights. I happen to be a very happy and funny drunk...or at least I’m funny to me :)
