What Happens When the Economy Improves?

Yeah, I'm not getting the five star resorts either. But I guess Disney is trying to appeal to a market that cares less about theme and more about simply showing off the fact that they're rich. That's the only reason for the existence of 5 star resorts and hotels. To show off the fact that you can afford them
I'm sure the economy WILL improve at some point and they'll probably dust off those expansion plans when it does

And people only buy a Bentley to impress the neighbors?

And they only eat gourmet food to show off to the wait staff?

This class envy stuff is really getting out of hand.

"Obama's budget would double national debt over decade."

We haven't seen the worst of it yet I'm afraid. This administration will be nothing short of disastrous to our nation and our economy. When this budget is pushed through it will lead to the inevitable increase in taxes and not just on the upper one percent they love to harp on. Every family that pays taxes will see an increase. Dark days ahead folks.

Because the last administration did so well. And the Dow is up again. Yup, these policies are really hurting.:lookaroun

Yeah, more or less. That's what I've pretty much gotten off of it. It's mostly to say "lookie what I can afford!"

Gotta agree with several posters - use what they already have before adding new capacity. But, if they haven't used the Odyssey by now.... ;)

I like what tirian posted about additions, though. All that was in the works at some point, and Disney typically uses downtimes to build for the good times, so it would make sense to see *something* get the green light (A hot air balloon doesn't really cut it in my book). Why not a Wall-E themed ride in TL? It fits two ways - 1) It's "futuristic" and 2) It's Pixar. ;) However, with the layoffs (both now and coming soon), I don't really expect things to get better from a capacity standpoint.

What happened to Iger's assertion that Disney was 'well-positioned' to weather an economic slowdown? ;)

I personally don't see the recession ending before 2010. And - one month of housing numbers does NOT make a trend. One week in positive territory for the DJIA doesn't mean the "stimulus" is working. Don't get so wrapped up in day-to-day numbers that you lose sight of the bigger picture. There's plenty of that happening already. Jobs are still being shed. Consumer confidence is still in the tank. And many of those responsible for much of the financial mess are still getting bailed out. We need to get back to "the buck stops here" and "personal responsibility" as core values in the country.

I heard end of 09 begining of 10, agree disagree????

I wish I knew the answer to that question! I could retire and go to WDW whenever I wanted ;)

I am by no means an economic expert but I am in frequent contact with people at banks, and investment groups related to building projects. From what these people have been saying (ever since the bottom fell out last fall) the end of 09 beginning of 10 timeframe seems about right. However, they too are only guessing as to what exactly will happen.

Yep, and they're not adding anything except a single hot-air balloon.

I miss the loss of a true off-season, but I understand that a resort the size of WDW needs to maintain a certain level of occupancy to operate properly. That doesn't change the fact that the MK has fewer attractions than any other "Kingdom" except for Hong Kong, and the MK is the most-visited park!

This right here is why you won't see updates. Until that changes, they don't have any reason to add any.

It's 25 bucks a day per person. We looked at it before our last trip and so it was a BIG negative.

I think you might have misread some of U's information. It's free for hotel guests and at a price for everyone else. (see link for more info) http://www.universalorlando.com/universal_express.html

As for changes...

They should rip out that ridiculous WtP themed play area in Fantasyland. Perhaps replacing it with a PatF attraction (given the upcoming film).

Try to limit Pixar-themed attractions to one per movie. MI was one of the worst ones and yet they keep building stuff for it.

get rid of SGE (I love Stitch but really...). Replace with a Wall-e themed launch simulator. (Could use the existing layout/concept but replace S with W and have bouncing balls and stuff flying around (think Wall-e TV spots).

Bring back WoL-type pavilion. Heaven knows we need some better (and enjoyable) health education right now.

Get rid of HISTA. That franchise has been and gone. Replace with 3D Imax-type (not an actual Imax) film that has figment travelling through different worlds and seeing potential future developments thanks to his imagination (kinda like a cross between horizons and Earth)

DHS Add a more relevant feeling special effects/movie making attraction. I know how stunts work we don't need 2 1/2 attractions showing us how.

DAK (I actually think this is one of the best parks at the moment and needs little immediate improvement)

Update a lot of the attractions at DQ. Current technology has really outdated it. (now we can all have digital lightsaber fights from the comfort of our home)

No, that's exactly why "they" need to add new attractions. If the MK's attendance level averaged an additional 10,000 per day, would you enjoy standing in the ridiculously long lines while perfectly good attractions were closed, and say, "Oh well, they have so many people, they don't need to add anything else"?

It's a very weak argument.
