What did you do?

Thanks that would be great! I haven't done too much speedwork although that was my original plan for this winter before the actual winter from HELL started! I occasionally use the telephone poles as markers and try to run X amount of poles at a fast pace and then 1 pole at a slower rest pace. I had one 5k where I was able to break 30 min last year. Hopefully once I loose my winter hibernation 5+ pounds, I will be back on track! It would be great to see your speed work though. I don't have a treadmill so I would have to adapt it for outside running. We were thinking of starting to workout once a week at a nearby track.

I'll pull some out for you although they may be hard to adapt to the outdoors. Fartlekking is good too (I like that word!).

Just did 4.5 miles on the TM. Sometimes the hardest part of getting a run done is putting on my running clothes. Once I've done that, I'm fully committed.

At a friend's suggestion, I am looking into some fun races that I can do with my kids. Right now I'm considering a Color Run with my son (but we have to see if it conflicts with one of his lacrosse games) and a Sprint Tri Relay in which my daughter would do the swim, my hubby would do the bike, and I would do the run. I'm waiting to hear if they will allow her to do it at age 12 though - there may be a 15 year minimum. In any case, I'm excited to be looking into these possibilities! Another one that I came across is a Glow Run in the dark which sounds cool. I'll keep you posted.

@JillC LI - @fmingo36 ,her family and I did the Color Me Rad run in Englishtown, NJ last year. It was a lot of fun, but probably a one and done for me. They don't time it since it is just a fun run and the course was really short of 3.1 miles. I think it was closer to 2.5. I think Coryna may have done the Glow Run too in NYC. That might be a good one to check out.

We tried out the first day of Jill's speed workout that she sent me. We were a bit late getting to the track which is not lighted so we had to cut our cool down mile at the end to a cool down 400 m. I think I did pretty well. We did a warm-up mile followed by 6 x 400m with 400m rest intervals. My best 400 was 2:04 (my first) and my worst 2:17 (my 4th).

Thanks for the race info Kristi. The Color Run I was looking at is called Run or Dye so it may be a different company - not that it really matters to me. Just want to do something fun with my son.

Those workouts I sent you were the first speed workouts I ever did (and still do) after many years of running. I found it kind of cool to be doing something new and different. Helps break things up. Don't do them more than once a week though because that would increase the chance of injury. I have often found that the first easy run I do after a speed workout is faster than I would have expected, probably because my legs got used to the faster pace. I'm curious to see if that happens for you as well.

I will keep you posted! We will have to increase the lengths of the long runs since we are prepping for a 10 miler at the beginning of May. For the first workout yesterday, we did do the RI at a fast walk but will try for a slow jog next time. It was a nice change running on the track. Dan used to do a sprint workout years ago. I did it with him as well (not quite as seriously though) and it reminded us of those days. We did the sprints 3 days a week, with a different combination each day of the week. We were a lot younger back then!

Last Sunday - NYC Half Marathon.

Let me start by saying that I love this race. I got in via lottery last year and this year I did enough of the New York Road Runner 5 Boro races to auto-qualify for 2014. They made some changes this year that greatly improved the start of the race to allow for more runners and less waiting around. Breaking the races into three waves was the best decision they could have ever made, some immediate results of that change... 1. Super short lines for the port-o-potties (as in I had a one person wait, in a race with 20,000 runners) 2. Much shorter wait time in the corrals which is key for a race in the middle of March in NY. We had to pass through metal detectors to get into the corral/start area which is something they started for the NYC Marathon (life post Boston I suppose) which wasn't that big of a hassle, unless you were running late.

Highlights:
-Seeing Mo Farrah warming up, none of the other runners noticed him on our trek to the corrals so I yelled "Go Mo" and he turned to smile and wave.
-Lots more spectators along the course, last year running down 7th Ave was like a ghost town, this year there were plenty of people throughout.
- Finally breaking the magic 1:50 mark with a PR of 1:48:50. I messed with my Garmin at some point so I had no idea where I stood time wise so the last mile I just decided to run until I puked or collapsed.
-The expo was so much better this year, from the layout to the vendors, way more engaging and interesting

Lowlights:
-The number of people walking up the Harlem hill just past mile 3, these people were in Wave 1 with predicted finish times of under 1:46, I have never seen so many people walking up that hill in any race I have ever done (lots of people underestimating their finish time to get a low corral, boo!)
-The super weird chafing I got on the front of my neck, my guess is that its from smiling too much :)
-Jumped right on the subway to head home/get out of the cold after the race, my legs and particularly my right quad hate me for not stretching - haven't done anything but stretch and roll since the race.

I loathe Times Square every other day of the year but I smile like a fool when its shut down for us to run through...

Congrats on that PR Lindsay! Love the run til you puke or collapse plan! LOL.
That Harlem Hill is a killer - I haven't seen Heartbreak Hill but I can't imagine it being much worse. I always train hills when I'm going to run a race in Central Park.

wow everyone is doing well. Can't wait for Joel to do his thing and I look soo forward to getting Nick's update when he goes after the 500 again. As for me, baby steps... This is going to be a lesson in patience as much as anything else. My PT felt bad for me and threw me a bone last time I was at physio, she let me go on the stationary bike for 10 minutes. Felt great but I was just getting a rhythm and my breathing under control when it was time to stop. I paid for it though, the leg and knee felt horrid for hours. The last two days have not been good ones for the knee, I really hate this. I cannot work and I cannot run, so I have put on about 5lbs in the last month as I struggle to lower my intake to match my lack of exercise.

That was a good workout, Jill. If you're interested in trying a more speed/sprint oriented workout, let me know. I've got one from my javelin training days. How is your foot doing? I take it it's better since you've been running on your treadmill?

Ah, now I get where your screen name came from! I've never known anyone who threw javelin. Cool. Sure, I'm always on the lookout for a good 3-4 mile speed workout. Thanks for the offer and also for asking about my foot. Yes, it is doing much better. I noticed it flared up each time I wore a particular pair of boots. So I stopped wearing the boots and I put innersoles in my work shoes for extra cushioning, and the pain hasn't bothered me. If I squeeze in that area, it's still sore, but since it's getting better instead of worse, I'm not worrying about it.

And hang in there @Mr mom.

I've done The Color Run and the Color Me Rad(with Kristy). They are pretty much the same event just different companies running it. Definitely a fun thing to do with the whole family and it's a pretty easy event, (not timed). I was going to do the Bubble Obstacle 5K run but decided against when I started thing about how unsanitary it would be (ya-I'm a bit of a germaphobe). Didn't do the Glow Run, it was too far for me to drive to for a 5K but I would definitely do it if it was closer.

As for me--yoga, yoga, and more yoga. Teaching 4 classes this week plus heading to Bethlehem, PA on Friday for another weekend of 19 hours of training. (I'm working on 95 hours to be yoga alliance certified).

I've been researching other Non-Disney 1/2 marathons to sign-up for. I know I need to be registered for an event for me to train. Trying to convince my husband we should fly to Ireland and do the Dublin Rock-n-Roll 1/2 Marathon in August. It's never gonna happen, but a girl can dream.

@fmingo36 - I am in the same boat as you dreaming about cool out of country races. Right now the top of my list are the Reykjavik and Berlin marathons. I think Berlin is more likely as my husband would be more than happy to come along as it coincides with Oktoberfest. But now Berlin is super tough to get into so the planning would have to start long in advance.

How far is Allamuchy Township for you? I think it is pretty far for us, but I want to do the Shades of Death Half Marathon in October. You run on the infamous Shades of Death Rd. I hear it is pretty hilly, but the medal is a cool Grim Reaper Medal! Warm up for Wine and Dine!

@LindsayLoves - I am set on doing the Midnight Sun Half Marathon in Reykjavik! It starts on the summer solstice at 10 pm while the sun is still up.

Lindsay, are you aware of the sweepstakes right now for a free trip to Iceland for their marathon? Also I've been to Munich during Oktoberfest as part of my honeymoon. That's where the main festivities occur. FUN! (But not really near Berlin)

As for me, 3.5 miles this morning on very little sleep. I don't know how you do it, Nick. I felt like death through the whole thing, and I didn't have to do 500 miles!
