What bug spray works best?

I haven't bought bug spray in a while. We are going in Oct and thought I should throw some in. I had 2 kids ages 11 and 6 so I want something that will work but without a ton of chemicals. Thanks!

Do you need bug spray in WDW? Or are you going somewhere else? I can honestly say that I've never been bitten by a bug (and neither has my family). I've been to WDW in May, June, September, and October. Maybe I've just been lucky!?!

But where I come from the bugs are thick enough to carry you away! I use Off! Skintastic Lotion. It has DEET but it's safe for kids! I prefer using a lotion to a spray.

For the most part you will not need bug spray at WDW. I do not know how they do it but I have yet to be bitten by a mosquito while at WDW.

As far as the effectiveness of bug repellents goes those containing the highest quantity of DEET work the best for the longest period of time. When I am in a situation where I need mosquito repellent I pull out the big guns and go with a 100% DEET spray. But you will not need anything remotely that strong in WDW. Bullfrog makes a sunblock with mosquito repellent that would work just fine if you want a little extra level of protection. Just be careful not to over apply.

Here are a few links to help you.

I agree, I have never used repellent in WDW. However when hiking, 100% DEET is the way to go.

Just don't get it in your mouth (Makes your lips go numb) :)

It will also haze paintball mask lenses and most other poly carbonate lenses as well (ie glasses, watches, etc) but it was the only thing I have ever found that would keep away the deer flies.

It's good to know that I won't need it. My sister is the one who suggested it. She was just there in July. Here at home I'm dinner for tons of bugs. I don't use bug spray though. I just itch. I don't like the smell of it. Maybe I won't get any. Why waste money on something not needed. Thanks.

The only time I've ever needed it was when staying in a really cheap motel on international drive. We just bought whatever brand was in the local shop and it seemed to do the job.

I've never been bitten whilst in WDW or it's properties (or whilst at any orlando themeparks now that I think about it). I don't think you really need to worry.

While I agree that there's really no need for bug spray at WDW, I did come home with three bites. But, I get bitten EVERYWHERE I go.

Ive never that I can remember being bothered by any bugs while in the World. Deffinately no mosquitos and I really dont even remember even having any problems with flies even when eating outside. Mabey one or so but nothing bad. Even if you did get bit by that one rare bug it wouldnt be worth the tradeoff of smelling like a citronella candle all day. We have even stayed at the campground and even there we didnt have alot of flying pests. The only time that you will have a over abundance of bugs is at the AK inside that big tree.....:ROFLOL::ROFLOL:

I would suggest the OFF! familycare lineup (towelettes for kids) or the Family spray. It contains lower amounts of DEET, which is easier on skin, doesn't smell as much as Deep Woods OFF!.

With regards to "chemicals".... everything is derived from nature.

I understand the thoughts that people have regarding "organic" or "environmentally friendly" products. It's really more of a perception that the marketing terms "organic" or "green" or "environmentally friendly" infuse.

In the case of "organic agriculture" supporters of it claim that the danger of non-organic food lies in the residues of chemical pesticides. The organic pesticides and fungicides are less efficient than their modern synthetic counterparts, therefore up to seven times as much of it must be used.

Some "organic pesticides" are:
Rotenone, which has been shown to cause the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease
Pyrethrum, which is carcinogenic (and derived from the Chrsanthemum flower)
Sabadilla, which is highly toxic to honeybees.

The "organic" methods aren't necessarily as organic, natural or environmentally friendly as one might think. Both organic and synthetic chemicals come from the same place... nature. It's how you use them and in what quantitative amounts you use them in.

Hemlock, lead, ergot, asbestos, mercury, ... are all found in nature. They are naturally occuring.... You wouldn't want to ingest any of them in lethal quantities, but they have their uses. And when used responsibly are not necessarily un-environmental.

"The more you know!" *ting*

I have never had a problem with bites at WDW either. I can't remember ever getting bitten.

However, I did get stung in It's Tough to be a Bug. :lookaroun

You really don't need bug spray at Walt Disney World.
Bugs are not a problem.
It's the snakes and lizards and alligators that you have to watch out for.
Get some 'Reptile-B-Gone'.

I cannot live without my OFF fan!!!!!! It sounds dramatic, but I am alergic to most bug bites and this is the first thing that I have found that works without feeling fumigated!

It is a little pricey, but I googled and found coupons online.

I hope this helps!

I prefer the Burts Beez Herbal Insect Repellent! Smells great, its natural which means no harsh chemicals that cause drying or iritation of the skin (No DEET), and it works great with no sticky or greasy feeling and build up. It costs about $9 and I'm sure you can find it a Whole Foods or any other grocery store. Have Fun!
