What became of the plans to update the Great Movie Ride?

I thought MGM's contract with the park ended long ago. Guess not

Of course we got several dirty looks from other people, which made us laugh even harder!

(here we go again)... The 20 year contract was signed June 27th 1985

`Laughing even harder` - didn`t that spoil it for other guests??

Fraggle Rock? That show was awesome! At least it was the last time I saw it. I was only 6. If Disney gets that, there must be a ride. I also hope we get that Muppet ride.

It still is awesome (as a 21 year old). I got some old episodes off K-Lite, and me and my little bro (6) laughed our heads off as the doozer who got a hat dropped on him and was walking around blind.

Note: I don't endorse file sharing, but it isn't shown on TV anymore, and its not on DVD. :)

We tried being quiet, but we had one of those uncontrollable cases of the giggles. It was that dang Tarzan that set us off! Every time he hollered one of us would mumble "There he goes again!" and we'd just lose it.

Kinda hard to keep a straight face when you're in the Casablanca scene and you can still hear Tarzan in the background.

Heading for the great escape.
They had to kill the upgrade cause one Pixar pulled the plug they suddenly realised that Disney hadnt made a Geat Movie for nearly 10 years.

Dood... I would TOTALLY go to an all-Muppet theme park! That would rock! I already know there's a Sesame Street one (forget where it is) called Sesame Place.

Sesame Place is outside of Philly.

And as for "one muppet ride" is enough. Sure, one muppet ride is enough...what we have right now is a Muppet SHOW....what we need, is a Muppet dark RIDE...

It would be amazing...even for those not obsessed with the Muppets, as I am, and as Eisner seems to be...

I won't often say good things about Eisner, but if the man loves the Muppets, I can at least give him a *little* respect....

All the GMR ideas we kept hearing were rumore I thought nothing more so I think this is what you were getting at in the original post.

Aimster, sorry for never responding to your question. Scooter cannot perform anymore because his performer has since passed away (I forgot his name, sorry). This is why they barely, if at all, showed him on the newer Muppets show that was shown on ABC a few years back. And we won't be seeing Skeeter because unfortunately she got lost in the Amazon while on an expedition according to a muppets website (they probably just made that up to tie in with the fact that she was added to the Muppet Babies cast yet she was never an original muppet).

There's a reason there's a hat hiding the building. WDI isn't stupid. ;)

There is a hat hiding the building because it was decided that there needed to be a gigantic icon for 100 Years of Magic, just like the Millennium Celebration's wand and the 25th Anniversary's Castle Cake, and this was the only place it would fit. We had this discussion when they were first erecting the hat in 2001, and Steve confirmed that it would simply not fit anywhere else within the park (even in Animation Courtyard, it would take up so much room that it would be very hard to get around in there). Might there have been a small urge to put that hat there when plans began to modify the ride? Yes. But, the fact that the ride just got a large rehab involving a complete repainting of the blocked Chinese Theatre would suggest it is here to stay, for now. To quote Rod Serling on the Tower of Terror (Cali-style), But, this much is clear--no changes will take place until after the Indiana Jones Adventure opens. Now wave goodbye to the real world...for you have just entered the Twilight Zone.

I'd rather not see any more Muppets rides. This is because half the park should not be of 1 franshise. I would really like to see another rollercoaster along the lines of the Mummy though.

That's interesting, considering that even though Jim Henson is no longer with us, but we still see Kermit pretty predominently (sp).... as well as other charaxcters Jim performed. Jim's son Brian voices Kermit now, right? I'm surprised they can't find a performer that can do Scooter's voice well enough to bring him back to the forefront again.

I remember reading about the possible addition of scenes/characters to this attraction and/or updates to existing scenes. Have these plans been thrown to the wayside? I was never too fond of the rumors, but I'd love to see more from the MGM library thrown into the mix, perhaps a bit from the Bond series? (Or is this another licensing nightmare).

There was also talk of gutting the attraction and replacing it altogether with something else. :hammer:

Are these ideas dead in the water?
The MGM movie ride was slightly updated with the queue starting in a different position. Also, the 'munchkins' in the Wizard of Oz scene have been replaced and now only appear on the right side and look more realistic [but bery frightening]. The scene with the main characters heading towards the emerald city has also been raised up slightly.

+++++ wARNING +++ SPOILER BELOW

The gun scene has also been moved to a western town. The guide goes into a bank, attempting to stop a bank robbery. The bank catches on fire. This is the only addition/change I really enjoy about the GMR.

++++++ Okay, safe to read below +++++++

The Oz scene is just plain creepy and didn't need to be re-done. There may have been other slight changes, but I didn't notice any others.

SPOILERS

The gun scene is still sometimes done in the underworld. I rode it twice in the last week and once it was done in the bank and once in the underworld. I think it may depend on what car you are.

If you think that's creepy, did you know that Disney sets up banquet tables on the floor (ride vehicle area) of Oz for on property wedding receptions?

Now THAT would be creepy

Could you imagine if you were dining formally and then all of a sudden the scene "comes to life" and all the munchkins start singing and then the witch comes out with her broomstick...

The munchkins have never been moved...They are still on the left and right side. The emerald city has also never been touched. Still the same as it always has been.

There are two vehicles, one for the western scene, one for the gangster scene. Depending if you get the front vehicle (the western scene) or the back vehicle (the gangster scene) depends on what character you get. This also has never been changed.

Well, during non peak guest attendance, they often run only one vehicle (two connected cars) so guests may only get to see full action in one of the two scenes, such as the gangster scene (which is the scene before the western).

So while you are completely correct, some guests may only get to see one of the two scenes, even if they ride more than once. This is a shame. Also, the queue has never been "walk-on" short for me, always a reasonable wait time, so I don't see a particular need to cut down on performances (unless, say, it is 1 or 2 hours from closing time and considerable decline in attendance.)

I'm definitely not a big Muppet fan. I did watch Fraggle Rock back in the day.
<br>Anyway - the show is fun, and I'm sure I'd enjoy any ride they made of the Muppets. I'm not creative right now, I don't know what I'd like to see them put in.
