What became of the plans to update the Great Movie Ride?

I remember reading about the possible addition of scenes/characters to this attraction and/or updates to existing scenes. Have these plans been thrown to the wayside? I was never too fond of the rumors, but I'd love to see more from the MGM library thrown into the mix, perhaps a bit from the Bond series? (Or is this another licensing nightmare).

There was also talk of gutting the attraction and replacing it altogether with something else. :hammer:

Are these ideas dead in the water?

This is my top candidate for total replacement. I generally hate spiel rides - but this is the worst. The pacing is awful (how long does it take to get through the Tarzan room!!) I think there is such potential with a large space like that. Perhaps the oft mentioned great muppet movie ride!

I thought MGM's contract with the park ended long ago. Guess not.

When I visited MGM last year, my friend and I went ont he Great Movie ride and we could not stop giggling every time Tarzan swung by hollering. Even past that room you could still hear him, which really had us howling. Of course we got several dirty looks from other people, which made us laugh even harder!

I wouldn't mind seeing the ride redone but since it's a movie studios theme park, they NEED to have a ride like The Great Movie Ride to keep with the theming.

I just rode it for the first time last week and I was laughing at Tarzan too. Then again, I laugh at everything. If anyone was at MGM on the 8th I was with the group that got everyone at Indy to do the Wave, clap along to "we will rock you" and other stuff. I think the CM's got mad cause we were entertaining the crowd more than they were. Anyways, I thought the GMR ride was alright but I'm always for new stuff so I wouldn't mind seeing it be gutted and turned into the Muppet Ride although I think they could find a better location...

Ironic you brought this up. When MGM was originally planned, the current Muppets area was supposed to be ALOT bigger and include a spoof of the Great Movie ride caled, what else, The Great Muppet Movie Ride. But hten Jim Henson suddenly passed away in 1990 and all those awesome plans were shelved. But now Disney finally bought the rights to the Muppets so who knows? Maybe these plans will see the light of day in the future. I hope so because I LOVE the Muppets.

And just for the record, I don't like how they choose the extras for the Indy stunt show anymore. Before you had to prove you were worth it. Back in 1994, I got to be one of the "screamers". When they were looking for people who could scream, I let out my eardrum busting, wake the dead shriek and the CM emcee said "Who was that?! Get her up here!" LOL!

I've only seen it twice since I've only been to MGM twice (The indy show) but I don't remember the "Dimitri" CM. I kind of remembered a fake extra but it really caught me off guard. I thought he was a real guest. He looked very young from far away....

Wow, what a splendiferous idea. Just imagine Animal as Tarzan or Miss Piggy and Kermit in a possible Gone with the Wind rip-off. And I'm sure they would have had a substantial bit of off-stage drama to keep it within the tradition of the Muppets. Thank you so much for sharing this...

(P.S. - Another superb example of unrealized potential. I'd love to see a dark ride with the muppets... it almost sounds like a ride that would practically write itself.)

The ideas for a Muppet ride are endless. The animatronics could be amazing since afterall they must look like they are "puppets". The posters in the queue of MuppetVision alone are inspiring enough. Not to mention the Muppet cast consisting of about 50+

Well yeah of course but there's TOO many characters to include in a ride. I mean, of course they could put in all those no name muppets and all the animals and cameo muppets that appeared, but thats more $$ to add them all. Not to mention Muppets that no longer can be performed such as Scooter (RIP),etc.

Heck, including Fraggle Rock, Creature Shop Stuff, Mopatop's Shop, Hoobs, and every version of Sesame Street from around the world, there would be over 1000.

If I am correct, Disney only owns the rights to the Muppets. I know that doesn't include Sesame Street or Creature Shop...but I don't know about the others. Perhaps someone knows more?

Disney only owns Bear In the Big Blue House and the Classic Muppets(Essentially anything with Kermit and Friends). But I have a feeling that Disney will pick up what's left of the Jim Henson company, since now all it is the Creature Shop, Hoobs, Animal Jam, Mopatop, Fraggle Rock and the rest of that stuff. As for Sesame Street, they are owned now by Sesame Workshop(the company formerly known as CTW) Besides, Disney will still work with Henson and Disney probably will get the theme park rights to the other properties of Henson.

Fraggle Rock? That show was awesome! At least it was the last time I saw it. I was only 6. If Disney gets that, there must be a ride. I also hope we get that Muppet ride.

Dood... I would TOTALLY go to an all-Muppet theme park! That would rock! I already know there's a Sesame Street one (forget where it is) called Sesame Place. It's owned by Anheuser-Busch.

And... why can't Scooter be performed anymore? That's odd.
