West Side Parking Garage construction

I am not sure which system Disney is using, but I have found web sites for similar systems that don't use a sensor in the concrete, but instead a camera in the light assembly. It actually make a lot of sense to do it this way since it minimizes the amount of wiring needed.
the camera would still need some sort of power requiring wiring, as i highly doubt these lights would be battery powered

I said it would minimize the wiring, not eliminate it. If the sensor and indicator are in one package you don't have to run an extra wire from the sensor to the indicator.

I don't think the Parking sensor system at my local Westfield worked from day one!
Surely you're not implying that Disney would allow something to become dilapidated and broken and stay that way for a period of time. o_O :angelic:

they did leave PI abandoned how many years, so really anything is possible

along with different abandoned attractions in the parks from time to time, but luckily thats starting to change

The overhead parking sensors are not functional yet but will be my understanding is that they hope to have them ready this week. Remember the garage just opened up to the public this past week and the main goal was to have it available for the holiday rush some things still need to be ironed out. I was over on Saturday evening and the 1st band of elevators near AMC were down (we had to use the ones by Bowling Ally) Just like anything kinks need to be ironed out but they will be.

Driving in from i4 west yesterday, there were portable electronic signs instructing drivers to use the Epcot exit for DTD. This appears to be working since the 535 exit was very free flowing. OTOH, the epcot exit had cars at a standstill back to the welcome arch in the right lane. This was around 4pm on Thanksgiving Saturday.

Have the surface lots east of the garage been closed? Has anyone else been noticing a backup at the epcot exit? How bad is it to park by that exit nowadays?

At this time the PI lot and the lots to the east of that are still open. The EPCOT Center Drive way of going to Downtown Disney is backing up because the signs are telling everyone to go that way but then the DTD ramp no longer flows onto Buena Vista Drive via a Yield sign. Due to construction, there's a Stop sign there now and for too many drivers, they sit there waiting for a green light rather than stopping and going when it's clear.

Ugh.. that would explain it...

Photo update as of Friday, Dec 19. Landscape installation on east side of parking garage finishing up.

New large directional signs above elevator and escalator banks on each level inside the garage.

The access building (external stairs, elevators, escalators) to the West Side garage is getting a red brick façade to match the décor of Disney Springs.

Something that didn't click with me in the pictures until I actually drove into the garage was how high the clearance was on at least the first floor. I don't know if it's just for construction, or if it will continue once Disney Springs is all open, but there was a full sized semi-truck pulling into the parking structure when I was. It drove down through to the end of the 1st floor and stopped, my guess was either to get directions or to unload right there.
I'd hope that it isn't a permanent loading dock area, or at least not the main one, once this finishes, because it slowed down entering the parking structure. The fact that they built it large enough to handle this though makes me think that they plan on trucks entering it enough to make it worth designing it that way in the first place.

Or maybe to be able to handle RV's on the first floor. I can't imagine what a semi would be delivering to the garage on a regular basis once the structure is completed.

Maybe. I was thinking more delivery to some of the stores close to the garage once the construction is complete. I didn't look to see if there were spaces for larger RVs or trucks in the lot. I parked as quick as I could. The parking situation there is such a HUGE mess I had dropped my wife and kids off at the SunTrust bank across the street so they had a shorter walk to the Marketplace, and I went to park in the structure. I was kind of in a rush which is why waiting for a semi to slowly pull into the structure stuck out in my head so much.

This was discussed earlier. One theory was that they wanted floor 2 of the garage to be at the level of the pedestrian bridge (still under construction) crossing over the service road as well as the same level as the overpass for the direct off ramp from the highway. Both the pedestrian bridge and overpass have to be high enough to allow large trucks to pass underneath.

West Side (Orange) Parking Garage photo update as of Tuesday, Dec 23. The parking availability indicator sign is up at the east end of the garage, although not functional yet.

For those interested in moving dirt....appears foundation work is progressing on a pedestrian overpass on both sides of Buena Vista Drive and the east entrance to the parking garage.

IMG_4371.JPG

An update to the garage access building that will house elevators and escalators. Low walls have been added to the connector bridge. Application of exterior brick façade continues.

IMG_4369.JPG

Finally, an update to the I-4 Interstate connector to the West Side garage....this is looking out the west end of the garage with Buena Vista Drive in the foreground.

IMG_4376.JPG

A more distant view of the overpass pilings from the garage. Buena Vista Drive is between the sets of pilings. The ramps at left are attached to the parking garage and parallel Buena Vista Drive.
