Weight Challenged Friendly rides and attractions

A friend of mine said he's going down to disney soon, though not till sometime in the summer, but anyway he asked me a question which l was not able to find on on any of the disney sites. He asked me " Is disney a fat friendly place?" "What rides and attractions do l recommend and what to avoid ? " Well I told him about this site, but l guess he's to shy to ask,so i'll ask for him. My friend is about 5'8 5'9 ish, he say's he's got a 60" waist line and weighs close to 400lbs,but he's been dieting. He's says he has seen alot of people bigger than him walking the parks, but he does not want to wastes someones time or fun by holding up any rides or attractions while visting the parks getting on or waiting for attractions. (l don't think he's that huge, but l'm only asking to put his mind at ease) So l thought it be a interesting topic,we all know people who are weight challenged, (could stand to lose some more myself) maybe this would help people who are thinking of coming to disney and help in their planning for having a great time in the 4 parks. Thank you on behalf of my friend.

I'm 5'2" 220 (lost 7lbs this week!) and my weight is mostly in my butt...I have a little trouble with some of the the turnstiles especially at Pirates. Tell your friend to turn sideways as he's going through or use the wheelchair gate. Otherwise I can't help since I'm not as tall as he is...oh...oh...I did read that on Test Track, the front of the car has more leg room...same with CTX. I agree with Fantasmic!329 above...Space Mountain cars can be very tricky to get out of.

Don't do Space Mountain if you have a weight challanged person in your party! A normal-size person has trouble getting in & out of them!

Good call, those things are tricky.

Excellent observation and a very true one at that.

Tell your friend watch out for the teacups. They are very tight. I'm not a heavy person but I have extremely long legs. And they aren't made for anyone of any extreme size.

I agree with this as well. Since, Space Mountain is not a good idea to ride encourage your friend to go and ride the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. This way they can still get the "feel" of SM by going inside to take a look!!

I'm 5'8", about 275 lbs. Turnstiles suck. Pooh was a tight squeeze with the bar. You need to have good self esteem before u go to WDW. Even with boat rides, you feel like the boat is a lil lower in the water cuz of u, even though it may not be. Theater seats are all pretty bad... especially philharmagic and CoP... star tours/body wars. Thin is not the average person anymore... time to change (however unfortunate).

Weight challanged people may choose to use the wheelchair entrance instead of the turnstiles. Cast members won't question what the person is doing and typically no one will notice so you won't get embarrased.

Hi, I really don't think your friend will have any problem getting on the rides. I know this because my Hubby is over 4oo and he can get on all the rides, the only thing is some of the rides he will have to sit alone. My hubby said to tell your friend to have a blast :D

Thin may not be the average American, But the rest of the world isnt as obese as us, what needs to change are peoples habits.... More exercise, and less visits to MC Donalds. I do agree that maybe they need to put some warnings on certain atractions for large folks, or maybe one of the vehicles in the line somewhere to test it out so they dont waste there time.

Oh, those Pirates turnstiles...I tell you, I'm 5'8" and 160 lbs, what I would consider thin, and I find those turnstiles irritating. I feel like they were designed only for people under age 8. I have a 31" waist and almost break my pelvic bone if I try to walk through those turnstiles--no problem on any other rides that I recall, but those are a pain! Spend a few bucks to upgrade to the non-mechanical turnstiles!

Logan...however true your post may be, it was a bit harsh...Disney should accommodate as many guests as possible (as long as safety isn't an issue, as it might be on a ride like Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, where you need to be safely restrained). I would certainly not say that Disney goes out of their way to help anyone on their diets! All those monster brownies and 1 lb. rice krispies treats...evil! I can almost smell Main Street, U.S.A. right now :D

To you cruel answer but not everyone gets big on Mc Donalds alone in this world. I take offeance to what you said. Sometimes overweight is cause by other things. Just like any eatting disorder.

Being 5'9 and having a gut myself,l kinda know how he feels it's a handicap that takes a long time to heal from. All the money they collect they could come up with a better turnstyle counter. But compared to most parks, disney seems to have more room on rides than another theme park. I thank everyone for their posts on the subject and did not want anyone offended from this topic either. l'll forward this thread to him after it slows down in a few days. l know from my own experiance that it's hard enough to find that special someone to be ones better half in life because of how the world looks at you because one is overweight. Well l think after he reads this he'll know that most disney people are different than the folks he had a bad experiance at Cedar Point, BTW most rides there are not weight challenged friendly if ever you decide to visit. All the info is so helpful and thanks l know he'll be happy and feel better about himself.

Being overweight myself (mostly in the bust and butt area  ) I agree with the Space Mountain scenario. I fit perfectly, it's just a pain to get out of. I can get in fine, but I hate getting out because it's a hassle.

As far as anything else, yes the Teacups also suck...but because of the legs. I'm 5'4" and if you try to put more than 2 people in it can be tough on the legs. What else? Nothing else really from my personal standpoint. I have no problem with Splash, but I could see it being a problem with the more weight you have. I don't know about anyone else, but those are the only ones I can see, with me personally only having problems with the Teacups and Space.

I have had many guests at space mountain ask me if they will fit in the rocket, and honestly it's different for every person. I've seen some people who are larger than others get in with no trouble and others do have trouble, the best thing for your friend to do is atleast wait in line ( if it's not long ) or ride TTA to check out the rockets. He will not be holding up the ride, if the cast member loading guests notices someone having trouble getting in and assumes they will have trouble getting out we put a delay behind that rocket so that they will have enough time to get out safely and without causeing an inconveiance to anyone

Weird how I got negative feedback for sharing that an overweight individual may use the wheelchair entrance so that they will not be hindered by a turnstile.

To whomever you may be, since you were not brave enough to leave your name, giving advice and letting others know helpful information on this forum is not cause to leave negative feedback.

This is what "No name" left as a comment for me...
Quote:
"Just because Americans are stupid and overweight does not mean Disney- or anyone else should encourage or support it. I think it's obscene how large people are and then get mad they are fat. Take responsibility for your own life!"

Well, whoever you are, I think it's obvious what you are:zipit: . I would like to encourage you to be tolerant of others whether you agree with their lifestyle or not. There are many different people in the world that have special needs. In America we are free to live our lives the way we choose (Don't be jealous:animwink: ) and because we have those choices, we also have the drive to protect that choice even if it means creating longer lap belts for larger people so that they too can enjoy rides in the most magical place on earth.

And just because you are ignorant, I'll let you in on a little secret...not all obese people are obese due to lifestyle choice. When I was younger, my next door neighbor was diagnosed with arthritis. She was 8. Her medication made her swell and she was always in pain therefore basic exercise was not an option. By 11 years old she weighed 300 pounds and she was around 5 ft. tall. Her weight gain wasn't a choice. Should we have denied her a trip to Disney World? Should we have hid her from public view? Or was she just some stupid American kid?

By the way, I didn't read one post on this thread where someone stated that they were angry because they are fat. They don't blame you for making them this way so back off and enjoy the forums. They are for entertainment and knowledge not for your scrutiny.
