I ran the half marathon this past year and it start to sleet a little during the race. But it was not as bad as it sounds. Once I started running it actually felt good. The worse part was having to wait another hour for my family to finish, so since I was not running my body cooled down fast. The weather this year was extremely weird(After race day it warmed back up). It is usually a lot warmer than what it was this year. So to be safe I suggest you bring a cheap pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt to wear over your running clothes before the race starts. Then when you get too warm just take them off.

Enjoy your race experience.

It can be anything. A few years ago it was 60's-70's if I remember correctly. This past year, yes, it was hovering around freezing with precipitation that was definitely not rain. This year was an odditity, coldest weather in like 40 years or something.

This year was nothing short of freezing - but it is not the norm. The 3 other times I ran Disney I was more worried about overheating. My wife ran the 1/2 and it was sleeting, I may have complained more spectating :zipit: , I ran the full and thought I would drop layers as I ran, but ended up running covered like I was still in CT. Bring gear to be prepared, and we always hit a thrift store to score old sweat pants & long sleeve shirt that we throw away on the way to the start as it can get chilli at 4am in the staging area...great thing is any throw away stuff you ditch before the start all goes to charity. Be prepared with a little forethought and you'll be fine...but beware, as you say this is your first, these races are addictive!

I wasn't running this year but I was there (see trip report in signature). It was freezing. I was miserable. I've been to WDW 6 times in January/early February since 2004 & this was the 1st time we experienced this weather. I know it's not the norm. I lived in Central Florida from 1981 to around 1991 & only remember miserable freezes like that once or twice. Chances are you won't get that frigid weather again for several years and then it'd have to happen to fall on the marathon dates.

I agree about the cold weather we had this year. My uncle did Goofy's Challenge (any of you who ran this year might have seen him speaking at the Milkhouse, as Gary is a Sr. VP at CIGNA, who is the sponsor) and he was so cold, epecially on Sunday. He had those hand warmer things in his gloves, but I kept trying to give him my mittens when he was done.

If you find out that it might be chilly for the race, the info others have provided is great - a sweatshirt you bought somewhere for cheap (or one you don't care to lose) can be worn and taken off on the course. All disgarded clothing is given to charity, after being laundered.

Good luck in the race!

My plan for when I run the 1/2 in 2012 is to go to my local Zellers (our version of Target) or Walmart and get and a nice but inexpensive zippered hoodie, that I know I'm not going to be upset to lose on course but will be nice enough that someone else will be happy to get.

It was actually colder during the marathon on Sunday, but yes, the temperature was in the low 30's for the half, with sleet and freezing rain.

Back in '07, the temps were well into the 80's for the start of the marathon.

Two years ago, it was cool weather that felt just about perfect once you ran a couple of miles and were warmed up. A couple days before or after (can't remember which) it rained like crazy. We were lucky to miss that.

This past January, it was really cold, but that was an aberration.

Several years ago, it was blazing hot.

You just never know for certain.

My friends and I loved that they were calling the sleet "frozen precipitation particles"! I have a pic I took of the tv showing that the wind chill was 29 degrees. While on the bus waiting for more passengers to load before heading to our resort, our bus driver put a dvd in for us to enjoy -- a beautiful fireplace with a roaring fire!

So the advice given is great--prepare for a wide range of temps!

it was FREEZING this year for the half. I went to GOODWILL and picked up clothes I could shed (they donate all shed clothes to charity) and also brought an old comforter to wrap myself in for the 2 hours I stood around.

For me, it was hard to run in the cold, epecially when I got stuck behind walkers who would chain themselves across the width of the road and I couldn't get around them.

Disney sent out newsletters before the race and we actually got one about a week before telling us it would be colder than normal and to be prepared for it.
