Here’s the plan ….
We’re getting up early and Mike is going to go to Big Pine to pick up the bike. There is zero chance they’ve even started to work on it. C’est la vie. While he’s gone, I’ll pack up everything indoors for travel. Together we’ll pack up the outside.

We want to be out of here by 11:00, and will return to Fort Pierce for the night. The National Hurricane Centre updates every 8 (6?) hours, so we’ll have had multiple updates by this time tomorrow.

From Fort Pierce, things are still tentative, but we’re looking at a KOA near Gainesville. We’ll play it by ear if we need to go even further north at some point.

Just took the pup for a walk and the weather, as usual, is absolutely gorgeous. It feels weird to be this proactive with a hurricane, but the difference is that we’re not safely hunkered down in a Disney bunker this time.

Good night, Peeps.

You need travel options - one road out isn’t good when everyone else is leaving. You’re making the smart, safe choice. I love that I don’t have to yell at you!

You know how much I hate getting in trouble.
And dying. I don’t think I’d be too fond of that either.

We left the campsite just after 12:00 and will be at our new one shortly. Full update soon, once we’re not in a bumpy truck.

The 5:00 NHC update makes it look like the Keys may not be affected at all.

You make your decisions with the best info you have at the time. And with zero elevation and nowhere to hide, we are still okay with our decision to leave.

Based on Ian’s current track, Gainesville is not the place to be! We’re booked here at this lovely little KOA in Fort Pierce for the next 8 days. Hopefully we don’t have to move again.

IMHO you made the right decision as it can still wobble into the keys. I'd be out of there as well with the eye of a cat 4 just to the west with all that may entail.

Yup. Once I got over the initial sadness of leaving, I was fine with our decision.

I’m a sunny side up person. I’m never disappointed for long. If you’re familiar with my posts, I say “On the plus side …” A LOT!

I spent 23 glorious days in the Keys; met some wonderful people; decompressed; and spent quality time with my favourite person (and pup).

And now let me tell you about the craptacular drive we had getting here …. 😂

We left Paradise, where the sun was shining, the skies were blue, and the swimming pool was beckoning … and drove into thunderstorm after thunderstorm. Oh look it’s clear up ahead. Psych.

At one point in our journey, the wind was blowing so hard that it somehow blew one off the bikes off the bike rack. Yes, the bike that we picked up this morning.

I heard it. We lost sight of the handlebars in the Furion camera. And cars were honking like crazy.

As best we could, we pulled over to the narrow shoulder of the flipping turnpike with cars whizzing past us at 70 mph.

Thank you Lord it was still attached to the rack by the lock only, but dragging on the ground. Had it detached completely, it would have been disastrous for the vehicles behind us. So like I said, thank you Lord!

There’s a lot of damage, but it’s not destroyed. What are you gonna do? There is zero reason it should have slipped. Everything was still high and tight … and yet, the bike was dragging on the highway.

And that my friends, is why we escaped the Keys. Wind is not your friend. Where we are has half a dozen hotels within walking distance, should it come to that.

I’ll take pics tomorrow. a) It’s dark. b) Mike is really upset.
