Trip Report We Kept Genie in the Lamp *COMPLETED*

50 years later, what goes around comes around.

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom opened in 1971 with an admission charge and an attraction ticket system. Admission got you into the park (and onto the free If You Had Wings, sponsored by Eastern Airlines) but every ride required a separate ticket (A,B,C,D,E) which varied in price based on the attraction’s “value.” E-tickets were the most expensive (this is where the expression “it’s an E-ticket ride!” originated) and cost 90 cents apiece. Ticket books bundled A-E together for a reduced cost, but there were never enough E’s (and always leftover A’s and B’s.) Not to worry though ~ each land had its own ticket booth (think tiny kiosk) where individual attraction tickets could be purchased (assuming your parents said yes. 😉)

This was the system for over a decade. The introduction of all-day Passports (and eventual Park Hoppers) was a welcome relief for guests ~ ride what you want as many times as you want for no additional cost. Yes, you had to wait in line. Lines that often were very long. But it was a SIMPLE system.

When Fastpass was introduced at the turn of the century, it required some strategic planning and lots of extra walking to obtain the paper FPs in order to “skip” a line. Fastpass+ exacerbated strategic planning to a whole ‘nother level. But it was a FREE system.

Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lane and Individual Lightning Lane have thrown SIMPLE and FREE out the window. And now in 2021, we’re back to admission and paying for attractions.

But not us.

At least not this trip.

This vacation was a respite for me as I grieve the recent loss of my father. It was a time for memories and nostalgia. A time for keeping things simple.

I’m ready to share if you’re ready to read.

Who: Tuvalu and Woody

Maybe I am running behind on some rules and guidelines but are adults allowed to wear Princess Dresses to the parks? I always though this was not allowed... :cautious:
So did I, @Laurenciaa. So did I.

I'd like to know if the other two princesses were allowed entry and how they responded if/when they weren't...
So would I, @LadyBelle. So would I.

I thought it might have been a Halloween party thing but it was early in the morning...
Max
It shouldn’t have even been a Halloween party thing….:in pain:

Have to chime in. Only explanation I'd take on the trio of princesses.. if the little one was a 'wish' kid and she wanted this as part of her experience. Then she gets whatever she likes. If adults are just living out their dream.... ah no. But, were they wearing tennis shoes that had little lights that went off with every step??
I did not see their footwear so I cannot say for sure…..

They were

Arty Pooh. But was it really since we rode before rope drop?

Eh, since it’s my slang, it counts!

Fantasyland was still fairly quiet but time was running out.

To get the most “bang for your buck” at early entry, you need to be wise with the limited amount of time. First, be in the castle hub before 8:30 am so you are one of the first to enter Tomorrowland or Fantasyland. (We were late due to monorail issue.) Second, choose one of the two lands as you won’t have time for both. Third, start with an attraction you don’t want to stand in a long line for later in the day.

The majority of early entry guests rush to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, filling the queue quickly. With this strategy you’ll ride with minimal wait but it may be your only early entry attraction (at best you may get in a second “quick-moving” ride like Pooh, Mermaid or Tea Cups.) 7DMT isn’t a fave of ours but another slow-load attraction is.

We went straight to Pan after Pooh and were in the queue when the clock struck 9 am.

TINK!!

Our wait was 15 minutes, which was much better than the 45 minutes it quickly became after rope drop (and the use of Lightning Lane.)

Sunday, con’t

Today I really missed my dad a lot. It would have been his and my mom’s 62nd wedding anniversary. Two years ago we surprised them with a party.

The pandemic was looming though none of us knew it. Many trials lay ahead. But that day we were happy and celebrating life!

I reflected on my happy times at WDW with Dad as I wandered around Fantasyland. Suddenly I knew there was something I needed to do.

A picture in the same spot where I stood with him on our first visit.

Then….

Now.

I texted the comparison photos to several family members. My cousin JB replied with: Did you plant that beanstalk when you were young? It’s huge now!

Woody had noticed a sign for cinnamon sugar donut holes when we passed by here earlier.

“Wanna get some?” I asked him.

He did.

Getting only one serving to share was a mistake ~ these babies were fragrant, warm and oh so yummy!

Our view as we snacked.

A man passed by wearing a tee shirt that a cat person (@StarWarsGirl, @Tiggerish) might appreciate.

Today I don’t want to human
I don’t ever want to human
I want to cat!

….when the man ahead of us turned to his wife and asked, “What is this?”

Wife: “It’s a haunted house.”

Clueless couple were the last guests admitted before the doors closed in front of us. This worked to our advantage (in more ways than one!) because we were first in when the doors reopened.

I hurried to Master Gracey’s portrait so I could capture his “transformation” for you fine folks.

This may have been our first Haunted Mansion ride of the trip but it wouldn’t be our last. However this would be our ONLY ride photo. (Not blaming playful spooks….blaming Disney, as nearly all our PP ride photos were MIA.)

Woody and I had been in the park less than a couple hours and in our unhurried pace we’d ridden four attractions and had a snack break. Take that, Genie+!

This was #5.

We noticed the wait for Space Mountain was just 20 minutes when we passed by from above, but decided to forgo the risk of injuring a body part. Instead we meandered over to Main Street to check out the retro merchandise in the CINEMA. (At least it’s no longer the ConFAKEtionery!)

So good to see you again, Mr. Toad. It’s been years, hasn’t it?

This cinema store was a trip down memory lane for me. Woody’s first visit to the world was in 1981, and there was stuff he remembered from his early trips too.

Somewhere in our house (we think in an old toy box) we have one of these:

I’m certain we didn’t pay $14.95 for it!

@Loco_driver I found something for you.

Pretty sure it’s a credit card holder. And pretty sure these didn’t exist in 1971.

It’s……large. Less charming. And more commercialized. (There are many not-so-subtle references that it’s sponsored by Mars Candy.)

“EARidescent” has to be the least appealing M&Ms color ever created.

These containers were $40. FORTY BUCKS! Disney would need to pay me $40 to take one….and even then I’m not sure I could stomach eating those worm-colored M&Ms.

I also can’t stomach eating dryer lint. But this kind CM posed so I could send some to @Mr Ferret 88 and @dryerlintfan.

Custom popcorn creations made here. Also not for me. I’m a purist.

Saw the Mickey ones of these during our trip and thought I saw a $25.00 price sticker and said NO WAY!
Then realized that was for another item when Gary pointed out the ridiculous correct price!
I had been trying to justify $25.00 so I could have the (cheap plastic) container as a collectible.
Hard pass.
And I've been known to buy a silly amount of Mickey stuff.

That looks like something the wife would really love.

No no. It’s “more Disney, more relevant, and more timeless”.
“EARidescent” has to be the least appealing M&Ms color ever created.
Looks like brains. Something you’d be severely lacking if you think I’d pay $40 for that!
