WDWFigment's August 2009 Photo Trip Novel

PREFACE: Trip Report or Russian Novel?

If you’re like me, you probably scrolled from top to bottom of this post to see its length and determine, based upon said length, whether it was worth reading. When you scrolled, you might’ve seen that it’s pretty long. However, unlike most trip reports that people seemingly drag on for several years, this report is here in its entirety right when posted. One option is clicking the report, letting it load for a couple minutes, then coming back and scrolling through the pictures, I took 4,547 so there should be plenty here, and skipping my commentary. The pictures are really far more interesting than what I have to say, anyway.

Another option is that, rather than attempting to read it in full right now, you could treat it as one of the other trip reports, and read it in increments. To that end, I have divided it into chapters for your reading pleasure. Perhaps you could print out a copy, and read it before bed each night for a week. I promise it’ll put you to sleep!

Also of note is that I am posting this trip report in multiple locations (admitting loyalties to more than one Disney forum may sound like treason to some, but how many of you really only check this board?). Two of these locations are photo-specific boards. As a result, this report goes on tangents at times about photography. I try to keep these tangents as brief as possible and in lay terms, but these aspects of the report may not appeal to all audiences. Just including this as fair warning.

Further, if you're interested in the photography here and would like EXIF data for the pictures, it can be found on the Flickr page for each image that is on Flickr (donated by little watermarks that read “Bricker”). To access said data, click the picture, which will take you to Flickr. EXIF data can then be found by clicking the "More Properties" link in the lower right hand corner.

Anyway, enough with the notes—enjoy the show!

CHAPTER I: The Calm Before the Storm

The trip started out as all of our trips (well, most, as we do fly out of Chicago-Midway sometimes) do, with an early morning trip to the Indianapolis International Airport. Once we arrive and check our bags with Southwest, we make the pilgrimage to McDonald’s for some delicious breakfast. McDonald’s is actually one of my favorite places to eat, but due to highly persuasive reports, I have learned that I will suffer a quick and painful death if I eat there more than twice per year. Accordingly, we generally only eat at McDonald’s at the airport prior to our WDW trips. I figure the 10 or so years each visit takes off our lives is well worth it.

08122009002284.jpg

After the delicious breakfast, we were posed to take on the world (yes, surprisingly, we were not on our deathbeds). We headed over to the Southwest gate and awaited our flight. Always the fashionista, Sarah took a nap in her leopard-print Snuggie. She had come down with a fever the day before the trip, and was on antibiotics at the time, so the rest was necessary so that we would be able to conquer the parks each day. I sat 24 chairs apart from her, weary of what onlookers might think of the highly fashionable Snuggie.

Our strategy to scare away other travelers to Orlando worked, as we were able to secure the front seats in the plane. As usual, we snapped some ridiculous pictures of ourselves on-board. However, after the second picture, a flight attendant spoiled our fun, informing us that several passengers complained about the flash. I’m not really quite sure how this was possible, as she had been in the front of the plane for both pictures (where no passengers were located) and I was bouncing the flash, so there should have been minimal affect on anyone behind us. Still, I understand the desire of not having flash photography on a plane, I just wish the attendants wouldn’t BS me about it. They may take me for a fool, what with my Figment plush and mouse ears, but looks can be deceiving. Well, somewhat deceiving...

When we arrived in MCO a little early at around 1 p.m., we rushed off the plane, and headed in some random direction we presumed to be that of the Disney’s Magical Express counter. For young people, we must have terrible memories, because this invariably happens every time, and every time, we end up backtracking, and asking for directions. Upon hearing the directions, we have an "ahh, yes" moment where we recall where the DME counter is located. Perhaps next time we’ll either remember its location or take the time to figure it out, before rushing around like chickens with our heads cut off.

08122009002394.jpg

After finally getting our bearing about us and making our way to the DME line, we boarded the bus for All Star Sports (hereinafter A.S.S. From the same great Disney marketing acronym team that brought you Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor!). A.S.S. was actually not my first choice for a resort (is it anyone’s?), but I accidentally booked there when making reservations, rather than at All Star Movies. Not a huge deal as they are both fairly similar, but I wanted to get some nighttime shots at All Star Movies, at which we have never previously stayed. The lesson to be learned is do not book your room reservations with multiple browser tabs open. Focus on the goal.

08122009002317.jpg

After a stop at Coronado Springs Resort, which looks nice from the outside, we arrived at A.S.S. (okay, I will drop the acronym now) at around 2 p.m.. We checked in, went to our room, and reorganized our carry-on bags and removed some items so that we had only our camera gear and other necessary park accessories that we would need for the Studios. However, before we would head to the Studios, we had a bit of a trek....

08122009002314.jpg

The trek occurred because we planned on buying Annual Passes, but in order to get the DVC discount, we needed DVC Member IDs, which we did not have. The trek began by heading to Downtown Disney, where we stopped at Earl of Sandwich for some delicious Italian subs. Sarah always raves about this sandwich, and I was too lazy to properly peruse the menu, so I just ordered the same thing as her. Big mistake. While I normally like Italian subs, this one did not compare to whatever sandwich I normally order. I attribute the lacking taste to the fact that the sandwich did not have an opaque dressing (I realize Italian sandwiches often don’t). Any experienced sandwich eater will tell you that mayonnaise, or a mayonnaise-like product, is a necessary component of any delicious sandwich. After we consumed our mediocre sandwiches, we began walking in the 128 degree heat (at least it felt like that, I believe the actual temperature was 94 degrees) to Saratoga Springs Resort, where we needed to pick up our new Disney Vacation Club membership cards that conveniently had not yet arrived in the mail.

We have stayed at Saratoga on our past two summer trips, so we are familiar with the walk. However, in the past we would make it at night, when it was cooler, and often after trips to Pleasure Island, the experience of which inexplicably made the walk seem more bearable. In the middle of the day on a hot and humid day, with Sarah being a bit under the weather, the walk was far from pleasant (unless you enjoy soaking your shirt with sweat!). While taking the reliable and convenient bus service from Downtown Disney to SSR would have been an alternate option, we weren’t in the mood for an hour wait for something that we could accomplish ourselves in about 20 minutes.

We arrived at the DVC preview center at Saratoga to the shocked gazes of Cast Members who were surprised that we made the journey by foot. After a short wait during which I snapped some pictures of the beautiful murals in the atrium (I’m not sure if this is what DVC actually calls the room, but I need to call it something) and we drank several cups of water to rehydrate after sweating out several gallons of water, we received our Member cards. We were now one step away from becoming Annual Passholders! However, the voyage was not over.

You may love the snuggie...others she knows aren't so enthused about it. It was a birthday gift (NOT from me), and I think the print was a bit of a joke. It does crack me up though!

Thanks again for the advice about the characters at the Studios. Unfortunately we were only there one day, and it was after 5 p.m., so we had no luck with that. I still think we did fairly well character-wise, even though we were worried when we started out slow.

Wait a second... I didn't say I love the snuggie, just that she has one! Big difference, considering I'm not exactly clamoring for one myself. What I love is the fact that she proudly took her fashion forward (or backward, take your pick when it comes to animal prints!) snuggie out in public!! Now, that's awesome.

There probably wasn't anyone at the Magic of Disney Animation that you haven't already met. Except for maybe the villians, and if that's the case you'll be able to catch all of them at MNSSHP this year. So, no worries. After our Christmas trip, which started out slow character-wise, we enacted a new rule for ourselves: at least one character interaction a day. Of course, we usually don't have a problem with this, but it's helpful when we're with Brett's family. I did notice you met the "new" soon-to-be-retired Smee. We never came across him and I don't know that I'd seen a picture yet; he looks good, but I think I like the original better. Although I guess it doesn't matter since they're retiring him.

I wish you would have posted the dates in the parks. I might have missed them if they are posted. Awesome camera btw. It takes magical pics. :)

(Woops, I messed up the whole quoting part, but you kwim...)just wanted to confirm your suspicion! I am indeed one of the 20-somethings that has taken a huge liking to the older 40s-60s movies, complete with Bogart, C. Grant, Astair and many others! Great flicks! I was actually inspired by the GMR since I wanted to know what the fuss was all about. Thanks Disney for opening up a whole new cinematic world for me!

HAHA, I love the CM peeking out behind you in this picture! How fun!.

The monorail pic is just breathtaking, great job on that one! I also love this one of Sarah, that's how I feel on TT!

I read the whole TR if you can believe it!! Well, I do have to admit I skipped over some of the deep camera language-lol. But really , beautiful pictures and well captured trip report. Enjoyed it so much! Congratulations on your recent purchase into DVC and your becoming annual passholders!

I figured most people would gloss over the camera talk--just that you read all of it besides that is impressive! The Test Track shots were tough (I'm not sure if I posted the other on-ride ones, but there were a few). Next time I can hopefully do better with those.

Cary Grant is one of my favorite actors. Mostly the work that he did with Hitchcock (my favorite director), but some other films as well.

Sarah made a comment to Smee about him getting plastic surgery, and he 'blushed'. I had no idea he would be leaving already. I think his face looks fine, but the midriff shirt is a little odd (even if that's more how he looked in the movie).

Thanks for reading! Our first day was August 12th, last day was the 18th.

Cameras don't take magical pictures, people do. :) I have handed plenty of relatives my camera and they take terrible shots. Not trying to be smug about anything, I just often get messages asking, "what kind of camera do you have? It takes great pictures!" In reality, I work hard to get these pictures and the while the camera makes it a bit easier, it has very little to do with the pictures.

I just have to echo everyone else's sentiments - what a FABULOUS TR with FANTASTIC photos!!

My faves were the ones in Frontierland(?I think?) with the castle lit up in the very background and the Partner statue ones. I am going to have to drag my family in to MK at night on the next trip, just for photo ops (altho I have to get a portable tri-pod for my p&s).

I am so sorry your fiance wasn't feeling well - I know what it's like to soldier on thru a WDW trip. And, IMO, if you're going to have a snuggie - it might as well be leopard print. It seems like it would be the full snuggie experience.

My favorite spot for photos in DAK is the Pangani Forest Trail. So lush and beautiful. Even I get good shots there.

Thank you so much for sharing. Our next trip is a surprise for the kids so there is NO Disney talk around here right now. Your TR helped get some of my Dis-thusiasm out of my system.

Great trip report! I have read a trip report of yours before and while I was at MK on Monday I actually saw you, you were kinda walking fast with a food tray so it must have been when you were coming back from Cosmic Ray's. The park was crazy packed that day but I did notice it thinned out later in the week.

Amazing trip report! I really enjoyed the way is was written along with the awesome pictures!!!

If I was ever to see you two at the parks, I would temporarily run away with your cameras because I know what it's like to want to capture so much with one's own camera..... but also sometimes wonder what it's like to just go to the parks LOL. I have a decent Canon point & shoot yet sometimes I catch myself trying to get pictures way above what both my camera and myself can take haha.

Again, great pictures and it looks like you two had fun!

Funny you point out that I was walking quickly. I always walk very briskly. One of my biggest pet peeves is people who walk slowly, or what I call 'indecisively' (constantly changing directions, wandering without paying attention, or not following a straight path), which I always seem to encounter at WDW. Sarah doesn't always appreciate how quickly I walk...

Hi Figment!

I couldn't wait to read your trip report and enthusiastically read every word! I've been without my computer for a few days, so have just had the opportunity to get caught up. I'm sorry you didn't get the fireworks pictures you wanted, but all the pictures you've posted here are as awesome as ever. I truly do enjoy your work and your trip report was just as great.

You may remember, that I bought my husband the D40 last year for our anniversary before our trip in December. I have to say, his photography has improved tremendously with that camera. So I might have to disagree with you somewhat about the camera not making that much of a difference. On a side note, he has an epcot camera strap like yours that he bought in 1986.

Sarah is just stunningly beautiful! To look like that when she didn't feel well! I've never looked that good on my best day. I hope you will post a photo of her in her wedding dress when the time comes. I know she is going to be one gorgeous bride! Best Wishes to you both.

I will post wedding and honeymoon pictures when the time comes. I wrote the contract that we entered into with our wedding photographer, and I made sure to get a full copyright release and also copies of all the RAW files (this actually proved quite difficult--several photographers refused this request, but it was a deal breaker for me).

Wow, Figment! I am actually shocked you found a photographer that agreed to give you the RAW files. The photographers on my photography board would never agree. They don't want to give up creative control of their photos.

Having said that, if a photographer looked at your work, they would see that you are probably not going to do anything to their pictures that they would be embarrassed to have their name associated with. You have such a good eye, and such good post processing skills, you're not going to print them with horrible colors, bad crops, etc.

Good on you for finding someone who agreed! I can't wait to see them!:)

It actually was rather difficult. I posted a question about it just to see if it would even be possible on a Disney photography forum I frequent, and a heated discussion (in which I think I might've offended some pro photogs) ensued.

Although I had several points that there is no point repeating here, my response to your specific point above is that someone could do more 'damage' to a .jpg file than a RAW file, given that any editing will be more destructive to a .jpg file than a RAW file. Further, if they have the wherewithal to request RAW files, they have the programs to process them, and probably know what they're doing.

Moreover, I don't view a wedding photographer primarily as an artist, so I think that's a bit of BS. Certainly, there is an artistic process, but the primary role of the wedding photographer is a 'hired gun' to capture memories of the couple on their special day. The photographer should be the one attempting to satisfy the couple in any way reasonable. One of the photographers I contacted told me that her wedding photography was "about her storytelling, and she needs complete control over how the story is told." I think that's a selfish approach that is entirely wrong.

I think wedding photography is a racket that uses outmoded business practices (based on the film days) that desperately need to be changed. I would have thought more of the photographers would have been willing to compromise given the economy, but they would have rather compromised on prices than on the RAW issue. I even found some who wouldn't give electronic files at all. To me, that is just downright dumb from a business perspective, and is actually a huge legal liability for the photographer. Alright, I will stop on this now. It's just an issue that really irritates me. Luckily for us, our photography agreed completely with me.

Also of luck was that he is awesome. Very awesome. We paid more than we wanted, but I think it will be worth it. We met some people who I thought flat out stunk, and another requirement for me was that we had to have a photographer who is better at photography than me. Nothing would irritate me more to look through the pictures and think, "why didn't s/he do it this way?!" This guy is flat out awesome.

Good for you. You're right, it is a very touchy subject. I am amazed at how many still won't sell their files. I am getting closer to starting a photography business, and selling the files is the business model I intend to use. I totally agree, I think it's where the business is headed.

If this guy is awesome, then you got an even better deal. Wedding photographs can never be redone if someone messes them up, so it's worth it to pay for quality. Skimp on something else if you need to, but when the day is over, the photographs are the only thing you have left to remember it all.

Besides Sarah of course!!

How sweet of you to remember us. Oh my yes, he is so proud of his camera and uses it all the time! Mostly for pictures of our 6 (soon to be 7) grandchildren, but that was the main reason I wanted him to have it. He did have a great time taking pictures on our WDW trip too. He bought the D40 Field Guide you recommended and says he has found it very helpful!! Thank you for the tip. He got some really good shots at WDW that I'm going to get him to post in the POD thread one of these days.

We even laughed at ourselves for trying to pull off a "Figment" as we called it, by trying to be the last people out of AK on an EMH night. We weren't the very last but we were close and he took some fabulous night shots of Everest from Flame Tree BBQ! That was a lot of fun, and even though we were only in the park till a little after 9pm, it was exciting to be the only people in certain sections of the park. We can understand why you and Sarah enjoy your late night photo shoots so much! If only we were younger we might try some of those 3am photo shoots too.

Good for you putting your law studies to good use already with the photographer's contract! I can understand you wanting control over your wedding photographs with your processing skills. I look forward to seeing those one day.

Hey thanks so much for sharing your trip report and wonderful pics.
I read all of it, 100%. I loved every minute of it too.
I had such an awful week last week at work and this truly helped pick my spirits up for sure.
I really hope you and Sarah have a wonderful wedding and honeymoon, you both deserve the best.
You guys look so wonderful and happy together :)
When are you going in October? My husband and I are arriving on the 15th. We can hardly wait.:sohappy:

Sounds like you guys had a fun time. You really need to convince him to post he images in the POTD thread! You don't often see night pictures from Animal Kingdom. Tell him that I said he needs to do it for me, since I suggested the book! ;) :p

That's not to far away from now about 5 weeks. Lucky you!!! :>)
Enjoy the MNSSHP. :sohappy::wave:

Only 30 days away, as of today! We are really looking forward to MNSSHP. Neither of us have ever been. The difficult part is thinking up costume ideas!

As promised, here are some more pictures. Next picture update will include some more of us:

Tom, I too tried to find a photographer where I was given all the RAW files. My wife and I got married on Castaway Cay via the Disney Wonder in December 2007 and had a photography package from Disney. They were not flexible at all on access to the RAW files (not a surprise). I asked if it would be a problem is I had another photographer come along and they were fine with it. I had a cousin who is a professional photographer attend the wedding and he took the shots as well. These were the shots I was able to get the RAW files for. I was concerned the Disney photographer would not be pleased with a shadow photographer I brought, but I was pleasantly surprised as they both worked together well. One bonus to getting married on a Disney cruise, well actually there are many, is that you get the wedding photos in about 24 hours.
