Aside from it being the richest? How is that for a hook? Imagine NYC, Las Vegas, WDW, and Hawaii all rolled into one. Personally, I think that is one hell of a hook that will keep people going for a long time coming.

WDW vs Dubailand

Aside from it being the richest? How is that for a hook? Imagine NYC, Las Vegas, WDW, and Hawaii all rolled into one. Personally, I think that is one hell of a hook that will keep people going for a long time coming.

To anyone who thinks Dubailand is going to fail, please bear in mind, the pockets that finance this project run deep, and those pockets get deeper every time you fill up your gas tank. It is an investment, but it's also a vanity project, a dream to make the biggest theme park ever. To that end, that might be the very thing that separates Dubailand from WDW. WDW is clearly a business, but it does have a sort of emotional resonance that came from Walt Disney himself wanting to make a vacation destination whole families can enjoy. Whereas Dubailand feels like a park that was built because someone wanted it built. Simplistic, I know, but hat's kinda how I sees it.
Now, as far as how this may affect WDW, I honestly don't know. Because WDW is constantly expanding with new business ventures, what $$$ they lose by tourists going to UAE instead of Orlando, they might make back with the Four Seasons deal, or with locals shopping at the new Western property. Besides, people are still "doing it," so there will be plenty of people in the next generation for both parks. And whether it's comfort/familiarty or xenophobia, I do think most Americans would rather go or return to Orlando, surrounded by characters and stories they find fun and familiar. To quote the immortal words of Asia (the prog-rock band, NOT the continent, though they may have paraphrase it at some point) only time will tell...

I think when people make that comment, they probably think they're being viewed as clever for having come up with such a "great comeback". The problem is that it's so unoriginal, it has lost it's meaning. No one who posts that remark anymore is being creative or expressing a sincere thought. They're merely repeating someone else's words. To me, this does nothing to contribute to an otherwise intelligent discussion.
It's a discussion board. Something that comes with the territory is that people will judge one another's comments. Virtually every thread on these boards consists of members quoting one another and judging each other's comments. That's what a discussion board is. In fact, you've judged my comments in your post. Although I disagree with you (which I'm now expressing), I'm not attempting to deny you the right to express your opinion. You may see me involved in many debates on these message boards, but you'll never catch me telling another member to stop expressing their opinion.
Back to the discussion at hand...I think Dubailand looks incredible. I do think it could have some effect on WDW, if indirectly. It may be more of a direct threat to TDL and HKDL, which might result in Disney diverting it's attention and resources to those parks, and consequently away from WDW.

I consider that line a running joke on these boards... Just like talking about "The Ladder", a 5th gate, monorail expansion, harry potter, etc... But that might not be something someone like you would be familiar with, seeing as how you're fairly new to the boards.
Regardless, it's not your job to judge other people's comments. That's not what this board is for... And your comment did nothing for the main point of this thread. Much like this post didn't help the thread. But geez. Just back off already.

Just wanted to say thanks. I really wasn't trying to start anything by replying to Mickster's post, I was just surprised by the response to my response (wow, that's kind of confusing!). And I agree that while you should respond to someone's opinion, you shouldn't judge it. There is a difference.
Sorry if your nice post opened you up to anything disagreeable...and you're right, this is way OT.

My wife would hate to go as she enjoys wearing shorts in warm weather.Wearing a parka covering her head down to her ankles would be miserable.Also I'd be afraid of anyone getting on a ride with me if they have a bag of any type on them.Suicide bombers are a real threat in Muslim dominant countries.I dont mind traveling anywhere in the World except for Haitis,Israel,African Ebony Coast,and all Muslim dominant countries.

That entire paragraph was NOT original. We get whiners and complainers in here all the time. People who slam other people b/c they had a bad day or whatnot. What is annoying to you is funny to others... and since at last check, you're not the thread god around here... let's lay off other people shall we? You're new. Be kind to people around here. That attitude towards some of our kindest and much longer standing posters is not appreciated at all.
Lastly, keep up with this attitude towards people around here and you'll find, no one will bother reading your posts anymore... to add a short topic related comment at the end will go ignored. It was a clever line the first time someone wrote it. Since then it's just been repeated time and time again by people who can't come up with an original thing to say on their own. Truthfully, how is "one less person in line" ahead of you going to make a noticeable difference to you? It won't, right? Because it was essentially a joke. Well it seems to me you're judging my post just as much as I've judged anyone else's. I haven't insulted anyone or taken any cheap shots. I simply pointed out a pet peeve. I see others doing it on this discussion board all the time.

I'm sorry but this is downright ignorant and offensive. It sounds as though you have never been outside of your own backyard (and won't be since you refuse to experience a good chunk of the world). You seem to know very little about the UAE and Dubai in particular, which is fine because not many people do. However, don't make things up out of your own unfounded fears. The UAE is a very successful country with high living standards. It's also one of the most diverse countries, with it's residents coming from all over the world. In fact, of the foreign population 55% are Muslim. (How many Americans are Christian again?) Just like any other country, I'm sure it has it's problems but have you looked at the figures for violent crime in the US lately? I know that I would feel safer in a resort at Dubai then I would in many of American cities (no offense). I'm sorry to rant but I felt provoked.

I think it's funny that mentioning suicide bombers in the context of a Middle Eastern locale (scandal!) earns scorn, but a phrase like "African Ebony Coast" raises not an eyebrow. :lol:

Can I just say, for what it's worth, I've been to Dubi. The law firm I work for has an office there and so I got to go there to work on a project. It's a nice country. I think a lot of the comments being made here are from people who don't know much about it and are just going off the fact that it's in the middle east.
That being said, I don't think it will hurt WDW busniess. Not because most Americans don't want to go to the middle east, although I'm sure that's true, but because, as someone else probably said, it's too expensive to fly there. I would go just to be able to see it and say that I've been, I also would go to DLP or DLT if I had the cash, but I don't and I'm thinking most people fall into that same catagory.

It pains me to be too serious here, but I'll defend the uninformed on this point. Isn't the fact that it's in the Middle East enough, at least to justify the MENTION of these nasty things?
I understand that it's the Las Vegas of the region and prides itself on its openness to Westernization and secular values and all that good stuff. Jordan also prides itself on similar fronts, and that didn't stop some nutbag from blowing himself up near a hotel there last year. (In fact, it may have encouraged it.)
You're probably safer in Dubai than Baghdad. I'll even concede you're probably safer in Dubai than parts of Detroit. But the fact is it's right next door to Saudi Arabia and one good swim from Iran. You can't blame people for having these thoughts. :shrug:
I understand people's concenrs over security, and I am sure that it will affect many personal decisions on whether or not to go there. But I would really, really like to keep this discussion outside of that area, and focus on whether or not DubaiLand will be able to stand up to WDW or any other Disney resorts on a design and service basis, without getting into the political side of things.
