WDW Surveys Guests: Gambling!

www.mouseplanet.com has a bit in their weekly WDW Update about WDW Reasearch surveying guests on how they would feel about gambling on property. The response according to the write-up has been strongly negative.

That strikes me as one of the last things WDW would do to even bring that up to guests, but... I guess if the people wanted it, then they certainly wouldn't keep it from 'em. $$$

But they even refused to offer it on the cruiseline, even though most cruise companies typically have gambling available. -- (It is however available at Disney private island: one of Disney's cruise destinations.)

It seems to go against everything Disney, but I wouldn't be negative about it. I'd love to play Mickey Mouse slot machines. Just think, the dots on the dice for craps would be little Mickey heads. All the cards would be Disney Characters (Mickey Mouse = Ace of Spades, Cinderella = Q of hearts).

I wouldn't mind it at all! I say, bring it on!! :sohappy: :sohappy:

Walt Disney World and Gambling?

:( ...

I have to agree with you there. WDW is a family resort. Children can't gamble obviously, so I don't really understand the point of adding gambling. I suppose if they added it to Pleasure Island if people really wanted it, it wouldn't be too bad. All I can picture, though, is slot machines in the hotel lobbies and blackjack in the line for Peter Pan's Flight!! I mean, casinos are so tawdry and over the top, they seem more suited for Universal than Disney. (Sorry to Universal and casino fans!) I know this would probably never happen, but stranger things have happened! Mouseplanet said the reactions were pretty angry, so hopefully we won't be seeing any casinos in the Magic Kingdom anytime soon!

I just see all of the things that go along with gambling in America... the flashy waitresses, the free drinks (and drunks), the fighting, the shouting, the screaming, THE MASS CHAOS!!!

But again you assume all families have children. WDW trys to offer something for everyone, not everything for everyone. Don't assume that if they tried to open a casino establishment, that slot machines and video poker would pop-up in every imaginable location. Building a small casino location on property would only be a plus for those who like to play the games, and to those who don't, they really would not need to go there, and therefore it would not effect them in the least.

I know it will never happen, but think of the fun we can have with this topic on this site. Let's use our imaginations on this one.

Scrooge McDuck can run the operation. Belle and Ariel can be waitresses :lookaroun

I have been on both four-day and seven-day Disney cruises since 1999, all of which make a stop at Disney's private island. There has never been gambling available or sanctioned by Disney on its private island.

The only port-of-call where a casino is present is in Nassau (The Bahamas), but it's certainly not promoted or sanctioned by Disney. Cruisegoers must search for the casino and arrange their own transportation.

I agree.
If Disney were to ever open a casino I'm sure they would keep a very close eye on it.
Having said that, I have nothing against gambling I love going to Vegas.
But having some guy in a rubber mouse head dealing me cards in a blackjack game just doesn't sit well with me.

Because gambling to many is a vice, it leaves a bad taste in peoples mouth. I personally enjoy playing poker and would mind seeing them build a small resort or casino in the Island Area for adults. I think it would bring a lot more traffic into the resorts. Ironicly, Orlando has a higher theft and larson rate per 100,000 then New York and Detriot, so it doesn't look like Orlando can do much worse.

You don't think that there is gambling on Disney property? When was the last time you went into one of the resort arcades? Last time I went, they had games that had you drop your quarters or tokens in in hopes of knocking off tokens from the moving shelves in order to win tickets to get junky toys. They also had other types of games where your token won you a chance to spin a wheel to try to win tokens.

I would have never thought that was gambling though until I saw a cruise ship's casino. In there, the same type of game is being played but instead of getting tokens or tickets, you get more quarters and wadded up paper money sitting on top to drop down into the pan in front of you. If you have ever walked into a casino, I'm sure you have seen a money wheel to try to win more money as well.

Gambling is on site and it is with the children not the adults. Which is worse? Casinos disguised as arcades taking money from children (which obviously comes from the parents) or a casino where the parents can gamble without the guise of an arcade.

If an arcade is ever put on site, I would hope the authorities would arrest parents who leave their kids in the lobby for hours on end like you see every day in Atlantic City.

As long as it was contained in one specific resort I don’t think it would be too bad. However if it progressed to be like Vegas with slot machines on every corner it would ruin Disney. However this in kind of a moot point. Casino style gambling is illegal in FL except for Indian reservations.

I would think they may be asking this question for a few reasons. One to see if there is any interest at all for both WDW or Cruise. Second, if there is some interest how that would translate in the Disney environment. I don't think that gambling (slots, tables) belongs on Disney property. However, here in California, the city of Garden Grove was trying to get approval to sell a parcel of land near Disneyland to an Indian Reservation. In turn, the tribe would have built a casino resort about 5 minutes from DL. It didn't get approved and was very publicly criticized.... However, the Disney execs may see the writing on the wall and that someone is going to get a card club/casino approved and build one right near a Disney property. They may be saying if there's going to be a casino near property, we should do it and do it right.....

I would hope they at least keep it out of the parks. Keep it out of sight of the children. Like you stated put it on a small location away from the parks.

They could even build a Las Vegas Resort, at least people will have the option of going or not going.

I'll have to say, this is the best news I've heard in years.... As an avid fan of the Mouse as well as a dealer in a casino I've been waiting on this just so I can work for Disney... I"ve thought about working on the boats out of Tampa just to be close but being a Cast Member would be a dream.

Now as for where and how they should do it... PI or the Boardwalk would be the place to put it... these are areas already geared towards adults.

I agree...even small casinos in certain resorts wouldn't be a bad idea either...as long as its separated from the rest of the resort...not out in the open like in vegas where you go in and bang there they are...The only thing about casinos though...is sometimes the people they attract are very questionable...and not the least bit, well, Disney...casinos would attract locals...which would equal to large sums of $$ for Disney...only problem is how easy (if they wanted to) would it be to get the right (from the state) to put gambling on Disney property...

As long as they stay away from gambling in the parks and don't go overboard with the amount of casinos...I'm ok with it...to be honest I've wondered why Disney hasn't built a resort on the Vegas strip...a huge resort, themed (that sounds like its up Disney's alley) with a casino among other things...in fact if anything Vegas needs more things for the young ones while the parents play...just some thoughts...

As good as Disney is at entertaining and creating a theme, they would be "nothing special" in Vegas compared to the multi-billion dollar resorts that are already there. Another thing to consider is that the prime feeder market into Vegas is the LA area, and Disney already has a large presence there.
