And of note, Disneyland has been doing this for years, so this is nothing new to us.
For comparison:
For an additional fee, Disneyland Resort hotels offer self-parking and valet service for registered hotel Guests. Simply follow the signs directly to your destination—hotel Guest parking is not permitted at parking locations designated for the theme parks or the Downtown Disney District.

Rates For Hotel Guests

  • Self-parking: $20 per night per vehicle
  • Oversized vehicle parking: $25 per night per vehicle
  • Valet parking: $30 per night per vehicle

I hope they improve the way they handle parking for resort guests who will now be paying vs those coming to a resort to dine, shop, etc. We had a couple of nights on our most recent stay at the Grand Floridian where we had to drive around for a while looking for a spot and then resort to parking way over in the DVC Villas parking lot. Thankfully they are keeping the DVC side free for members.

And Disneyland is on collectively 500 acres whereas WDW is on 25,000 acres that the company has owned for decades without nearly the land cost of California. The notion of paying in SoCal with land being at a premium isn't outrageous at all, it's outrageous when a corporation owns its own municipality in Florida and they're simply gauging the customer.

As a side note, having just returned from Los Angeles last week and having been to Disneyland during the trip, the operational differences and quality standard difference has become so gaping between California and Florida that it's jarring. One property still follows the quality roadmap set out by Walt while the other is a People of Walmart wasteland at this point.

Why is this the case? Is it the WDW management? Is it the fact that WDW doesn't get enough budget compared to DLR?

I don't understand the logic of charging overnight guests who are actually staying there and not charging day visitors etc
They way they have gone is very easy from an operational process perspective. They can just add it on to a bill of those guests staying at the resort, and don't have to worry about actual parking lot management - charging day guests and handling dining validation etc.

It's all about valet. The reason hotels need to charge for self parking is to make the valet effectively less expensive while still charging enough to make the valet business viable. That being said they don't want to discourage business for the restaurants.

And this may help deter guests who are parking at the resorts to avoid the parking fees at the auto plaza.

SO much for us that live close enough to drive. Well to me 700 miles in a car costs me about 40 bucks 1 way in gas. Sadly paying the 25 a night ( hoping to upgrade to deluxe next time) and gas, is still cheaper than flying from Nashville to Orlando where theres no good route other than up north and back down...Going to have to find a few dollars savings elsewhere...
