WDW is that really you?

I was on a cruise last week (had a great time) that was headed for Bermuda, BUT a hurricane is a hurricane and that was cancelled and they re-routed. As a result, one of those new port days excitedly brought me to WDW!!! I had not been since October 2008 and craving to go back soon, so it all worked out great that we were given the opportunity to go. Unfortunately due to time constraints, we only had around 6 hours to do what we wanted and show some around who had never been, so we stuck to resort visiting and Downtown Disney over the Parks.

Now as much as I love it there and always will, I've been going there my whole life since the 80's, for the first time it also made me kinda sad. Not in a good way. Yes, it is still "magical", but what I was viewing was not the Disney I knew even back in 2008.

Those "little" details that make all the difference seemed gone. Grand Floridian had overgrown plants and weeds all in the front. This is a FLAGSHIP resort. The front Parking area looked abandoned and a wreck. Inside had a complete lack of fresh flowers, far less than I have ever seen before, almost none at all. A few other resorts we went too also did not seem to be up to par in their usual tip top shape, notably animal Kingdom Lodge.

Downtown Disney, while I know work is going on, I just seemed like a complete mess and not in order. World of Disney seemed to have removed many props, most shockingly the awesome URSULA statue in the jewellery area coming through the glass. The pets section had been removed and it just seemed like the same merchandise cluttered and jammed over and over again into every corner possible. By the remarks of some of the cast members working, they also did not seem all too thrilled with how things were looking and were just shaiking their heads. Even Days of Christmas, it almost looked like parts were ransacked. Garlands were a mess....hanging, drooping....even patially on the floor. The other half looked to just be missing all the holiday cheer and theming, hardly any decor.

The monorail system…..oooh that poor monorail system. What in the world is happening here? As if it wasn't bad enough that the rubber trim on the doors were hanging off and dangling on the inside, I could rarely hear the famous recordings as it kept being interrupted with how the monorail does not run its usual hours anymore.

I wont go on much more, but to go there unexpectedly and see it in a condition I NEVER thought I'd ever see, just really left me sad and wondering what the hell happened and really took me by surprise. Maybe I'm overreacting and sorry if I am, but it just really hit me to see it in a condition I never thought pssible. I was not expecting it to be this bad. I always defend how perfect it is.

Hopefully, this is not the case and I just caught WDW at the wrong time. However, I see many on here talking about it, especially lately and with all the apparent malfunctioned attractions. More now then ever before. But usually I always shrug it off as I have never noticed it enough to impact me. I only wish had had more time there than 6 hours so I could really see more of its current shape. We were planning a trip there next September or October, but now I'm wondering if maybe that is just too soon…..!

It's called: why work hard to keep up appearances when people are going to come and spend money anyway?

I don't wanna hear any of this "oh, you don't love Disney; you're a doom and gloomer; go someplace else" crap. I'm a former Cast Member and long-time WDW and Disneyland visitor. I still visit and I still see the same problems time after time. Management should be held accountable.

It's just plain laziness.

There is still some magic left in the old girl. It just needs a little spit and polish.

Cheers!

I hear Disneyland hasn't scaled down a bit. I thought the Disney World Parks looked better, I guess they had to choose between the resorts and the parks . I still look back to the 90's with amazement and wine when I see the parks today. It's a bad economy, so bad even Disney is hurting a bit. Many of the potential Disney visitors are in a common situation of having a job one day but wondering if they will have it the next week. So in a situation like that Disney's not an option.

I have been playing musical jobs for 2 years now, one week I'm hired, the next week me and some other co workers are in the office shaking the bosses hand while he's saying I will call you when busyness (the economy) picks up. There is no way I would ever think about booking a trip to Disney. Who wants to plan a trip to Disney, have a bad week of poor income and that money you could have had to pay the bills went to a Disney trip. People re afraid to book trips or just cant afford them. Those days are gone now. I can't wait to see Disney when the economy picks up again. I sure hope it brings back old memories.

Sadly your not mistaking. WDW is in very bad shape. I love it and always will, but the upkeep especially at the resorts has been appalling the past few years. What is happening at the GF drives me nuts. The white rooftop lights are out all over the place and not only is this at the GF There are lights out on the main street train station. To me thats unacceptable to have lights out on the train station at the entrance of the busiest theme park in the world. I sure hope TDO wakes up. We have some hope though if the rumors are true about upcoming maintenance refurbs for headline attractions.

Yeah, it just seems to keep getting worse, unfortunately. A lot of the rides are in appallingly bad show conditions but its "ok" because people will still ride it anyway.

Though my love for Disney goes beyond words, I do agree however that Disney's maintenance is just dwindling down. We were just there a week ago. A few things in the Epcot attractions malfunctioned, yes they were noticable, but did it affect my experience, not really. I also experienced that their once exceptional customer service was also down. Who's to blame? I don't know exactly, but I do know that although inflation has affected every area, well, Disney always has a full house, their prices for everything always go up year after year but the CM salaries do not. If I had to point the finger it would go straight to management. Something is just not working like clock work in there like it used to. They know that people will keep on going, so what the heck. I'm sure if Walt could see what is happening he would be dissapointed beyond belief.

Glad, yet at the same time its very....very unfortunate, that I'm not alone with these feelings. Hope things shape up and soon. I will delay my next trip of things do not change.

Was @ WDW in August.

Beach Club landscaping was in great shape and they were busily working on repainting the resort.

All the parks looked great in my opinion. I'm certainly not a Disney apologist. I can easily spend my money somewhere else.

Maybe a problem with GF's management.

I know everyone has their own opinion of why this is, but I have my own and here it is.

This is not just an issue at WDW, it is happening all over the U.S.A. I am in my 40's and have noticed that since my generation to the youth of this country, this. People do not want to know how to fix things, after all that is someone elses job. This mentality has lead to a deficit of people capable of fixing things, and I am sorry to say, those that can, can only work on so much at a time. So if you have children, push them into the engineering, science, mechanical, electricity / electronics directions. Also let them be creative, after all how many remakes of tv to movies and redues of movies to movies can we really stand.

Again this is my opinion, so take it or leave it.

I would suggest you get your Disney Fix by travelling to the West Coast instead.

Disneyland has a LOT going for it right now... And in 8 months or so, it'll have even more when Cars Land and the California refresh is complete.

We've been die hard WDW fans, but when quality dropped below what we were okay with, we decided we'd check out the other Disney resorts. We've been to every one in the world now, and are season pass holders to Disneyland too... Even though we used to consider WDW our "home" resort.

We'll still make an occasional trip to WDW to see the things they don't have anywhere else... But we're spending the lion's share of our travel dollars in Anaheim... Where it feels like they still care.

Is it true that Disneyland is more kept up? I hear the place is spotless of any mess or any flaws.

Over at Islands of Adventure all the torches and fountains are working!

And at Universal and Sea World's restrooms there's actual water coming out of the cranes, instead of a few droplets, so you can wash your hands too!

I mean, it's not SPOTLESS. But you can certainly tell that they "get it" over in Anaheim still. They regularly refurb attractions there, and really that's half the battle on its own. Things are definitely more kept up.

As a resort, it really does a lot well, where WDW is really falling behind. Evidence of that is the attendance gap closing so much that they won't even break apart the numbers between resorts anymore.

It's ABSOLUTELY worth the trip, though, I'll tell you that. Don't let the 4 parks at WDW vs 2 at DL spook you. Attractions-wise, the numbers are awfully close. You've never seen attractions stacked on top of each other like at DL. It's pretty amazing, really.

Walt Disney World is getting so comercial. They are starting to forget what the theme parks are really all about. A friend of mine said the attitude from the guests are different in each park. Disneyland is so hyped up, when the electrical parade comes around it moves slower and the performers have the guests screaming until the last float. So much exitement there. And im just using that as an example, you can tell they really care about the guests and the impreshion they leave on them. I guess if Walt Disney hasnt walked the park it never recieves the full magic it should have.
