Yup.. it's true. lol.

WDW is phasing out a lot of their radios for in park communication with Nextels... so that means..

WDW is getting Cellphone Towers. There's already one up in the Epcot parking lot.

I thought about this too. Where I live they have not added new towers but used existing building and water towers. They just added the pannels needed to make them into reception towers.

I bet they will disguise them. Where I live, there is this one cell tower; it's obvious that it is a cell tower (it's like, 150 feet tall), but is cleverly disguised as a gigantic tree. I could see Disney doing something similar...

Am I the only person who is not thrilled with the cell phone towers. I'm from New York, and just about everywhere you look someone is on their cell phone. In Disney World, I appreciate not seeing this everywhere, and the last thing I want is to see tons of people on their cell phones. If it were up to me, they wouldn't even be allowed in the park.:lookaroun

I agree totally! There is nothing more annoying than being in the middle of a ride or a show and having people's cell phones going off. Last year, the guy riding in the row behind me at It's a Small World was talking on his two-way radio thingy throughout the entire ride!! It was so annoying. Imagine how bad it would be with everyone on cell phones??????

in one sense this is a good idea b/c so many people use there cell phones to communicate at disney world the bad point is that a) is disney that big of a place that people can loose there loved ones going from ride to ride
b) there are a million CAST members all around to help if you get lost
c) i agree with alot of people who say its stupid b/c your at WDW and on rides to enjoy your self not to go crazy b/c you can't find someone and be on the phone for hours when you could be enjoying yourself just because you think you lost them when you know if you don't get in touch with them they are just enjoying themselves like you should.

i have to end with saying the only people this works with are the wonderful tour groups that i have to always deal with scream and singing something from there native "Brazil or where ever they are from  anyways i think either way you look at it equals itself out to just plain confusion:veryconfu

err.. guys, the towers weren't put there for the guests. They were put there to facilitate Disney's transition to Nextel Handsets over radios. If a few guests (those using Nextel phones exclusively) benefit from this, good. Personally, I think it's a good idea for Disney to replace their antiquated radios with the Nextel Handsets... it will facilitate communication being able to access several outlets in one handset, rather than just one on the radio (ie- being able to call a radio, a phone, or page someone rather than just the radio).

The only thing I have to say is that I have a cell phone and I would take it to WDW. If I had to make or receive an urgent call, it would be good to know that I had my cell to receive my call with ease, and also good to know that I wouldn't have to drop tons of cash to make a long distance call from a pay phone.

Now, I guess they'll have to tell people to turn off cellphones and pagers while on all attractions, shows and parades.

Yeah, you're right, and they should.

As far as people getting upset that more guests will be using cellphones now that there are towers. I don't recall there ever being a problem with reception on property up until now. So i don't think it will cause the number of guests on cellphones to increase. As mkt reiterated, this is a CM upgrade, with runoff benefits to guests if they are with a poor carrier that didn't get clear reception on property.

And especially is this is for Nextels, which have the walkie talkie thing, where you're going to hear voices yelling out of a phone at any time. I hope there's no increase in cell phone usage. If it were up to me, I would ban cells in the park.

Disney will get earpieces... they don't like guests knowing what's happening on the radios.
