WDW Getting Cellphone Towers

It is funny how we did survive without cell phones before. I am sure if it gets bad enough Disney will come up with a plan for guest cell phone abuse...

Personally I would like to dearly see more use of a system that japan has used for years at many opera and or special shows that is a limited range cell phone jammer that blocks all cell phone traffic during shows inside theatres only during a performance.

Such systems should be strongly considered for auditorium shows, specific rides such as Haunted Mansion etc. where cell phones are a distinct annoying intrusion, signs would be posted outside attractions saying that this area has a "Cell Block" in effect during shows.

And I'd love to see the looks on the faces of the people having to give up their precious insecurity communication blanket (thats a Freudian pun) even temporarily.

If I was CEO it would be installed at ALL Disney parks.

It's amazing how we survived for so many years without cell phones isn't it?:animwink:

You make great points, and while I'm one of those people who want to see cell phone use baned while driving, I have to say that unfortunately, if a person isn't really causing any physical harm by using his/her phone they are within their rights to use it...abuse isn't something that can easily be measured...and if it were who would enforce any law...it comes down to the people who use phones...personally I'm one of the considerate cell phone users...I do take my phone around WDW (especially since we're always separated and at different parks...its the only way to stay in touch)..while some people may not find the use for cell phones, others find cell phones a crucial tool for enjoying their vacations...neither group should impose its beliefs on the other...

Its funny how the minority always ruins things for the majority, in this case the obnoxious cell phone users (minority) cast a cloud over cell phone use period, and will in the end affect what laws are passed and what rights if any are taken away....just my opinion...

Getting back to the main issue of the thread though, its great to see Disney upgrading some of those antiquated tools...radios are sooo last century...lol....but then there's the issue of radiation from the towers...:lookaroun

There's nothing new about having cell phones in the park. Personally I take mine, but use it only when needed (to make dinner reservations:D ).

It was my impression that Disney has already made the choice to ban cell phone's from there shows. I currently am an AT&T GSM subscriber. In the parks I have full signal, but the minute I walk into the building for the ride or show, I lose signal immediately. It's my understanding that Disney's using technology that block cell phone signals. The technology is cheap and is currently in use at some theaters through out the US.

I've been to Disney World alot, and have never been interrupted by a cell phone ringing in the middle of anything. I haven't even been able to make a call while standing in line. And this was with both my TDMA phone and my GSM phone. I just think no one has realized the loss of signal during the rides. Well that or I'm going crazy.

I have always taken my cell phone to DisneyWorld...never had problems with reception...never knew that they didnt have towers....funny.

I even recieved a call when in Haunted Mansion...though I have it set on vibrate only...so it doesnt ring....I still got GREAT reception.

Good to see that Disney is moving into the 21st century with Nextel....better than those walkie talkies.

I have sprint and I have had no trouble with service in WDW... I get service in 99% of the world. A lot of the problems are also with the handset itself

AT&T is the way to go....

I have never had issues with my cell phone anywhere in DW. I always bring it...I just keep it on silent vibra/mode when in shows.

I bet they will disguise them. Where I live, there is this one cell tower; it's obvious that it is a cell tower (it's like, 150 feet tall), but is cleverly disguised as a gigantic tree. I could see Disney doing something similar...

At my grandmas house they have one of those. it stands out and it looks hideous. It looks like it should be in a redwood forest in california

The new tower at Epcot is on the edge of the parking lot and sort of blends in with the light poles, etc. I don't think they will bother with camouflage.

Fire Department Radios don't work either

Wish Reedy Creek was going to Nextels too! Their radios barely work outdoors and rarely inside of the buildings! Small confort to those who's lives depend on good communications!

Glad the phones work well.
