WDW Awakens ...

Is this the "Spring Resort Showcase" or whatever they used to call it? The type of event where they've historically hyped things like #MonstrousSummer? If so, it's my understanding that this type of event was made up more of radio and TV "personalities" from target markets. They'll fly in morning show DJs from Miami, New York, Pittsburgh, etc. and get them to talk up WDW on the air. Is this something different?

Separately, I noticed that Baseball Tonight on ESPN was sponsored by Walt Disney World last night. I've never seen that before.

I look at it this way. Disney is 3 years from being where it needs to be. After Avatar, SWL, Toy Story Land, and all of the other little things are complete Disney will be back to normal. The problem is they started 5 years too late and won't finish for 3 more years. They need to be planning now for what goes beyond those new areas and ready to implement those changes immediately after completing these.

But the real problem is Disney IS behind by 3 years, but they will continue to tout "NEW!!!!" and raise prices, add more $$$$ events, all but hold you by the ankles and shake until every penny falls from your pockets. They should have planned for these things to be done in a TIMELY MANNER. Not 3, 5 years away from now. Their construction schedule, and dragging construction out for many quarters (to balance book$) is biting them hard. And I'm glad.

It needs to use more teeth.

I think the general population is finally catching up to us on this forum, and realizing that Disney is very consistent in two things: Raising prices of everything, and lowering show quality/standards without adding anything new to the table. Something's gotta give. (In the meantime, I've personally switched my upcoming trip from being WDW heavy to being 50/50 with Universal-- first time there, and I'm sure it wont be the last- my money is going ALOT further up the road- thus one reason for the change)

I'm pretty sure that's what this is. They do a media event every spring it seems.

I like your description of the lifestyles, sounds like easy street. He'll i'll be a hot head and tweet and blog about Disney if I can get some free food and room and board. It'll be interesting though. Do we know when these summer experiences are opening? By summer do they mean June or August 31!

This is a very weird time in history for TWDC. Especially for the parks. Never before have we seen "plussing" by removal on such a large scale. Now will WDW be great again in 5/6 years? It sure can be. But the jury is still out. We really wont know the effects until much later. With Bob Weis in charge of Imagineering and WDW's 50th coming up, this could be a very long 5 years of construction. But it may be better than ever once its all done. The problem is that they are not willing to reinvest in their current attractions and theme parks and "plus" those while they can before beginning the Construction Age for good. I for one am excited for what is coming, and yes even though there may be problems with TDO or TWDC, we are really finding small things to get angry over, when really if we do not visit for a year or two again, that way new things we know are coming, we wont be disappointed. For the people who go once every 4/5 years, the place is still amazing. Its the hardcore fans who go twice a year that find the small problems, cause things may be different. Sorry rant over.

Then methinks @WDW1974 exaggerates when he talks about the bloggers and local lifestylers who go to this thing. I'm sure those people get invited, but they're not the reason the event exists.

I think they wren't the reason the event was started, but they make up a good portion of the attendees now. Or they make up a small part of the attendees, but make the most "noise" online.

After living there and knowing some of these children? He's not exaggerating.
It's because they're so concentrated in one place. If the local Lite Rock station in Kansas City is doing a live broadcast from Epcot, you're not going to know about it unless you live in Kansas City. Conversely, we're all much more aware of the so-called "lifestylers" because we pay attention to "Disney Media." I think this event is much more for the former group than the latter.

Everything he says about them is true, but the event itself wasn't newly created for them. But it certainly has evolved to support that underbelly of OTown society.

Some of them I have respect for. But then there's 100 others that think they can be the next Lou Mongello, but they aren't nearly as savvy as that guy.

We're to that point as well, except we don't have DLR to fall back on. The DCL rates for summer 2017 were released last week, and the exact same cruise went up over 25% year over year ($6900 to $8700). I finally heeded Spirit's exhortation to write an email to voice my concerns and got a phone call back from the DVC executive offices. Which is funny because I sent the email to Chapek and Kalogridis and did not mention that I was a DVC member, nor did I include my phone #. I think I was basically handed off for someone else to 'deal with'.

I'm done with WDW for the forseeable future.
George K doesnt deal with Cruise at all. DCL and DVC both roll up to Karl Holz, and I know they share some services with ABD as part of "new vacation experiences".

I cant think of anyone on the invite list I have a shred of respect for...

You're mixing things here and yes, radio row is ALWAYS hilarious.

What I and 74 are referring to is an entire separate group. I remember one lady getting snippy with me claiming she was media and she had to get in front of me and then I turned and asked her why she wasnt covering the Zimmerman/Trayvon story with the rest of us the day before. She walked away FAST.

Alas, yes, this event is geared at the travel media/radio stations/etc but there just about anyone with a website can get in.

I'm not defending "those people" or arguing that they're not present at an event like this. I'm just saying that Disney doesn't design these events specifically for those people. Disney designs it for the radio stations and other legit marketing avenues, they just have an overly broad door of who gets in. Then it's abused.

Resident Curmudgeon
Honestly, with cuts so deep due to massive bleeding in Shanghai, coupled with NGE not coming close to delivering ANY sort of real uptick in revenue, coupled with attendance falling greatly -- no, I don't care that you waited 55 minutes to ride Big Thunder last night at 7:15 or that the line for Casey's was out the door, the reality is Spring Break was slow, blockouts for FL resident tix and CMs were lifted and hotels were available all over (on and off property)-- I am actually very surprised Disney didn't bag the event. They could have saved millions of dollars when they are counting fractions of pennies ... and the 'influencers' will still tell their flocks to go, enjoy $69 cupcake parties with Yoda on them, have $149 EMHs with free bottles of Coke and Mickey bars, have $249 breakfast at Boma, so why not cancel the event?

BTW, have been away from the parks world for much of 2016, but word I've heard is that Georgie K and Co are quite happy that most of this stuff won't likely debut until the July 1st timeframe as it will save tremendous costs on the bottom line, which will make the (doodie) show that is Shanghai look so much nicer.

Spirit @WDW1974, Do you think the relentless cutting is finally starting to affect WDW attendance not to mention the effects of Oil prices on south america.

It'll take way more than 3 expansions to bring Disney back to "normal." "Normal" being the high standards the resort as a whole used to be run by.
