One could argue that Tom Sawyer Island doesn't fit with a western theme either since it's not a story about the west

Well that WAS the western frontier at the time. The frontier moved with the age of the country... from the appalachian mnts, to the river valleys, to eventually the mississippi. Many of the 'wild west' stories are used to are actually from Kanas/Oklahoma area.. which most think of as 'central' US today.

Classics like Daniel Boone, Davey Crockett etc were about the lands to the EAST of the Mississippi :)

I think anyone making those arguments thinks the frontier only means us chasing indians around the great plains...
