One has to wonder if there were threads like this back when the wand went up. only "I wonder what this is..."

I know that the current incarnation of wdwmagic wasn't around then, and there weren't as many WDW fansites, so I suspect there weren't as many. ;)
(I know I wasn't on the net in 1999. :lookaroun )

Nice photos, Looks like they are moving along nicely. That wand is one massive structure.

I wonder, because Disney is public, if they post corporate tax returns which are viewable on line. Maybe at the end of the year they will write of the removal of the wand and show the costs.

How is that thing attached at the ground level?

Is it independent of the sphere itself, just using a steel post down into the concrete?

:)

It is a completely seperate structure from SSE.

The steel columns on the wand will be bolted to a concrete footer at ground level. Below the footer pad it is very likely that concrete caissons go further into the earth giving the structure increased resistance to loads put on it.

The tower crane on one of my projects (20 stories) was attached via concrete grade beam to the main building structures caissons.

I've never been able to confirm it, but I still believe the wand may have reused a foundation from an original tower crane. (take a look at the construction photos of SSE, look familiar?)

As much as I am thrilled to see the wand come down, if they did, in fact, reuse the foundation the geek in me would be impressed.

Hmm, that's really cool to think about!

I agree, it seems like if they're re-using the foundation, it's like they resurrected a piece of day-one Epcot history!

I would be impressed as well, however I still have major doubts that an old foundation would have been found to be acceptable as the footing for the wand. Involving projects where the new structure will be significantly different than the old I have not had one where old foundations were able to be re-used as is without some sort of modifications... tie backs, drilled caissons, widening etc...

Looking at the camera last night didn't see any flashes and no crane movement this morning. Has anyone seen anything at the park today?
