Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

As a newbie, I was actually thinking about moving my flight BACK for Springtime Surprise. The first expo day, is the first day of races (being the Everest 5K) and is the day I am currently scheduled to arrive. I just fear flight delays because you figure if the race is at 10 PM buses probably start around 6-7 PM (ish). I need time to go to the expo, my flight is due to arrive at noon if it is delayed though it shrinks the window even more.

Haven’t committed to pushing it back a day yet…considering keeping it but I am in a similar situation to you. I should be fine, but not sure yet.

EDIT: I know during Wine & Dine I believe I heard they were doing race day pickup. It was only from a YouTube video though, which is hardly a reputable source

I say come a day early. You can relax when you get to WDW and then go to the expo the next day. Enjoy the event with as little stress as possible.

I’m thinking about doing that. Just running into a few problems, everything is booked already.

I have to see if it will work with my travel party as well.

Right now if I kept it as is I’m scheduled to arrive at 12:38. You figure with baggage I‘ll probably arrive to my hotel at around 1:30 - 2:00. Then I have to hop on the bus to the expo, probably get to the expo around 2:30-3:00. Expo closes at 6 which gives me a little over 3 hours to get what I have to get done at the expo. Then it’s back to the hotel to check in, drop everything off at the hotel and try and catch the first bus. If the race starts at 10 PM going off Wine & Dine bus times they should start running around 2 hours before the start time. Which would make the first bus go off at 8 PM. Giving myself around 2 hours to get settled in the hotel. Then it’s off to the races literally.

It’s definitely tight and not ideal but if I can’t get it to workout it’s do-able. The only thing that really worries me is a flight delay. If my flight is massively delayed it could really put me into trouble. This is all assuming I can’t just pick up my bib at the race. I’m going to see what I can do maybe it will work out but then again it might not work for my party.

EDIT: If I was able to move it back we would arrive super late, then get up early and go right to the expo. As of now, we don’t have plans to go to the park on expo day.

I don’t think they’ll cancel. If anything, the parks are still moving forward with opening up more dining/entertainment options. If a Guest feels uncomfortable and wants to cancel, I could see rD possibly softening its no refund policy, but I think at this point, the weekend will move ahead as planned.

I just received communication from the Celebration Half/Marathon and they’re allowing runners to defer to virtual but you must pick up your bib/swag/medal in-person (no shipping), and your results will not count (to be expected, of course).

Have I told you lately that I 👍 you?
Whelp, I got some positive news today, hoping it turns back negative in time for my doc to clear me to make it down for the Dopey! I was a bit surprised by the result, I’m pfully pfizered and boosted, wear a mask indoors/crowds, etc and wasn’t feeling any symptoms (my gf’s mom is high risk so we all did tests before planning to congregate for Christmas, fortunately they all were neg and I hadn’t been in close contact with any of them the last few days, so I’m the only one in quarantine).

I’ve got 13 days to get cleared, fingers crossed!!

That bites. Hoping you recover quickly with no lingering symptoms.

The only thing that could remotely cancel the event at this point is if medical staff cannot attend. It won’t be Disney’s call unless they also start shutting down things in the parks.

Merry Christmas everyone! As a little bit of a runDisney gift, virtual runners will now find their bibs in their accounts for marathon weekend. I imagine this is for all distances, but as I am not running Dopey don’t know for sure. I plan on taking on the 5K, 10K, and Half starting tomorrow.

I just ran a 2022 race…in 2021! Anyways, the way my two training plans intersect it was best I started to tackle virtual Marathon Weekend a bit early.

Today, I completed the 2022 Virtual Walt Disney World 5K! This is my first time actually running a 5K during marathon weekend (virtually). As such, I tried super hard to PR and get a decent time. Without further ado here are the results.

Time: 34:50
Distance: 3.11
Avg Pace: 11:10

I unfortunately did not PR. That honor actually goes to the Timeless Classic 5K. Which I completed in 34:30. Yes, 20 SECONDS shorter. A little upset I missed it by seconds but that’s fine. Great results in my book still.

Anyways, tomorrow is the 10K followed by the Half. I definitely ran this 5K hard so may want to take a more measured approach to the others so I can finish.

13? I thought it was 10 now. Some group was recommending 5.

You’re right, 13 was just the number of days until leaving for the Expo when I found out. I believe the current CDC guidelines are to isolate for 10 days from first symptoms assuming no fever (on day 10 without meds) and that symptoms are improving. I haven’t looked too much deeper past that, maybe 5 is when they’ve had negative tests after diagnosis but before 10 days?

Fortunately, my symptoms never got worse than a bad cold a couple of days ago and I don’t have any real ongoing symptoms other than fatigue at this point, so, barring something unusual, I should be good to go!

This morning, I continued my virtual Marathon Weekend gauntlet with the 10K!

As I said yesterday, I ran the 5K way too hard. Even so, was still not able to secure a PR. Thinking about it now, I probably went out to hard since about a mile and a half in my heart felt like it was going to pop out of my chest.

Anyways, I wanted to take it easy during the 10K. I purposely didn’t go out as fast like I did during the 5K. Without further ado, here are my results for this morning’s race.

Time: 01:13:18
Distance: 6.22
Avg Pace: 11:47

According to my Strava (which can be iffy sometimes but usually is pretty accurate) this race marks a new PR. This takes the crown away from (funny enough) last year’s Walt Disney World 10K. Which I completed in 01:14:38. It’s funny when I actively try to secure a PR I couldn’t but when I purposely tried to take it easier I was able to during the race.

The run felt good, I didn’t overly strain myself and it felt a lot better then yesterday’s 5K.

Tomorrow, marks the end of the gauntlet and my virtual Marathon Weekend with the Half Marathon. I plan on employing similar techniques as I did with the 10K.

Just noticed the time to be at the race is earlier than usual. Wonder why that is also….330…….woof.
It’s interesting how WDW is trying to get everyone there early. 3:30 for a 5am start with some time groups much later? Most races I have run recently have moved to a just in time arrival to minimize crowds in the start area. Asking people to arrive no earlier then 30 minutes before group start time and enter corral 15 minutes before group start time.
