Last year, NBC signed a contract w/ Macys to be the exclusive broadcaster of the parade (and the July 4th fireworks) through 2010, but will probably keep it for the next eight billion years.

NBC needs something, Fox and ABC and CBS have pretty much everything else wrapped up.

Other than the Olympics, you're right. But that's only every two years anyway, not much use for their ratings. What are they now? 4th place?

Yup, fourth place. Conan does a great bit on it.

Yay! I go to the parade every year, and I've always been looking for a litte Disney Magic in it.

I just have one question. Every year, the new headlining float or balloon (in the past Snoopy, Grover, Kermit the Frog) is the MACY's kind of Christmas mascot. They have the stuffed animals that you get for a good price if you spend enough money at MACY's during the christmas season. It would be pretty neat if this year, their mascot was Mickey or something like that (for some reason, I remember a Mickey one a few years ago, but maybe I'm getting mixed up)

glo·ri·ous adj.

1. Having or deserving glory; famous.
2. Conferring or advancing glory: a glorious achievement.
3. Characterized by great beauty and splendor; magnificent: a glorious sunset.
4. Delightful; wonderful: had a glorious visit with old friends.

I believe that Robin Hall, Executive Producer of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was not referring to Ms. Rimes physical attributes.

I didn't think they were referring to her physically. I still think that glorious does not apply.

Garfield too!! There was a Mickey stuffed animal dressed as a band leader and came with a flute. I think it was about 5 years ago. They do repeat characters sometimes, because I remember Garfield being done twice once in 2003 and sometime maybe the 80's or 90's.

The float needs to be a certain size to be able to fit through the Lincoln Tunnel. The floats are made in Macy's warehouse in Hoboken, NJ and are made to fold up so they are eight feet wide and 12 feet high.

The night before the parade all along Central Park the balloons are laid out and blown up. This has almost as many people attending it as the parade itself.

You are right he/she? probably could have found a better adjective to describe Ms. Rimes.

Who knows, maybe he was suking(sp!) up to someone with that statement. :lookaroun

Not being a C/W fan, I wouldn't know if her fans consider her glorious or not !?

I love when Conan makes those comments about NBC. It's almost a given that he'll do it at least once a week.

And about the parade, I wonder if I'll have time to watch it. I'll actually be at WDW on the 24th, so I'll probably be at the parks. So I might have someone at home tape it, which probably even won't be worth it.

Uhhhh...no concept art for the float???

Anyone want to take bets that Stitch is on the float?

I do know one thing - the second some DL'ers get wind of this they're gonna be mad that it's all about WDW.

I didn't think that at all. I simply figured this was their shot at getting a big float in a parade for the East Coast audience. Not a whole lot of Westerners really watch the Macy's parade.

But we do all watch the Rose Parade on New Years Day on the West Coast. And Disneyland has had massive floats for that parade for the past several years. And last year, to kick off the 50th, Mickey Mouse was the Grand Marshall and the Disneyland float was extra-massive and was used to kick off the parade with a 5 minute big song and dance number.

I'm sure Disneyland will have a float in this years Rose Parade again, and that will focus on the West Coasters who watch that parade more reliably than the Macy's parade on Thanksgiving.

Really? You and I are geographically (not directly, but whatever) neighbors, but I never heard of the Philly parade, either.

My mom said maybe we can go in to the city this year to see the Macy*s parade, oooh that would be awesome.

I'm practically your neighbor too (Forked River), and I've never heard of the Philly parade either.

That would be cool if you went to see the Macy's parade. Have fun!

With NBC broadcasting the Macy's parade, I wonder if they will cut off to commercial when the Disney float is coming.... Also, everyone keeps saying how will Disney pull off Mickey and friends in 2 places at once?? Wellm the parades are the elast of their worries.. How will they explain Mickey in NYC, Philadelphia, California, Florida, Hong Kong, Paris..... the list goes on....

Because you can't see them at the same time.

Bandleader Mickey made an appearance in 2000 and there have been 2 other Mickey balloons (including the one in 1934 & the one from 1962-82). Just do a google image search for "Macy's Thanksgiving day Parade Mickey" (without the quotes).
