News Walt Disney World and other major Disney accounts stop posting on social media platform X

That's just free market capitalism. Certainly Disney is entitled to decide where they spend their money based on any criteria they please. It doesn't mean I have to agree with their rationale... it's just another example of why Disney is, sadly, a joke these days.
So it’s free market capitalism that’s responding to Musk for having wrecked the Twitter/X brand. What’s that got to do with Disney being a joke?

All platforms, including this one, end up hosting vile things posted by their users. It’s pretty much impossible to find a corner of the internet free of such nastiness, which, of course, is not to excuse it. Anything supporting hatred or terror is deplorable and unacceptable.

But what we’re dealing with here is something else, namely the actions of the platform’s owner. That changes things in ways that are pretty obvious, regardless of whether you agree with Disney’s decision or not.
If Mark Zuckerberg were to reply to a post from some random person on Facebook claiming white people are responsible for all evils in America by saying 'you have said the actual truth'*, I wouldn't expect for Disney to go running to pull their ads and other content from Meta's platforms. Obviously that's an absurd statement to agree with, and it would look bad on Zuckerberg as a person, but not a reason to pull all their content from the platforms he is the head of.

The head of a company's personal views, in this case, has nothing to do with the merits of the products or services they provide. Zuckerberg's hypothetical statement changes nothing about the engagement and monetization of the content Disney posts on Meta's platforms.

*To be clear, this is strictly a hypothetical for the sake of this conversation. He said no such thing, as far as I know.

Also jokes, apparently- IBM, Comcast/Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., Lions Gate, Apple…
Disney of today is a joke for many reasons unrelated to the topic at hand. This was merely the latest example.

I stopped posting on Twitter earlier this fall because it just became a disgusting cesspool from all angles. It's been 30 days and my mental health has greatly improved because of it. Obviously Disney PR stopping their posts isn't the same and is arguably a "virtue signal" but the point still stands. Twitter has became a sad and hollow shell of its once glorious self. It used to be my favorite social platform.
I only use Twitter for sports news. Same with TikTok.

Whereas I would.

Just as I would stop using this site if Steve endorsed some of the nastier things that get posted here.

You're certainly welcome to your opinion, but I think there's a difference between where you spend your personal time and energy and where you direct your business' money, both for paid advertising and content engagement. It's strictly a business decision where you spend your business' money.

The decision as to where you spend your personal time would be far more understandable to base on the thoughts of the company's owner/executives than the latter.

If fewer people are spending their personal time on a social platform, it tilts the metrics on the business decision. They are intertwined.

I’m sure it’s a business decision anyway. It’s ultimately about PR.

I'm a big fan of music and Twitter was a great way to connect with other aficionados from around the globe. Time will tell if I ever make a limited return because, although I've enjoyed the break, I don't have anywhere else to really engage in conversation now.

Almost anything that helps destroy Twitter/X is good. While it obviously has some positive uses, it (along with other social media) has gone a long way towards creating alternate reality echo chambers that lead to people living in a wild fantasy world divorced from facts (as you can see from some of the posts in this thread...).

It's also been used by the media as though it's the pulse of American (or even world) public opinion, when it's never been remotely suited for that purpose because it's never had anywhere near the broad reach among the general populace that Twitter/X users think it does.

It will probably just be replaced with something equally bad (TikTok is quite bad itself but it's a bit different from Twitter/X), but I'll take what I can get.

Linda has been telling these advertisers that there are systems in place to stop ads from appearing next to certain types of content. This is not true and the ad revenue sharing means these companies are not just having ads placed in places they don’t want it but also indirectly funding it. X isn’t holding up their end of the bargain, that’s something that seems like a business decision. Compounded with declining views makes it even more of a business decision.

X, love them or hate them, is going to be one of the most profitable companies in the world within ~5 years due to their data gathering capabilities coupled with the type of data they collect. This is why Musk has been buying every GPU he can get his hands on. X data combined with their ai will be a game changer.

In the moment thought data, combined with location, is incredibly valuable. No other platform does it that way.
