Walt Disney ruined our children?

I've heard that that too, might be a false accusation. The Word/Rumor is that he fired some Studio Worker that WAS Jewish, and upon his dismissal was disgruntled, and started the rumor.

I don't know if that little anecdote I heard was true, but I would certainly like to think so.

From what I read he just used to mutter offhand comments like "damn communist jews" and stuff like that. I don't think he ever discriminated in business practices.

Well that wouldn't make any sense when compared with Dan's article, up there, so...:lol:

Whatever. I choose to believe along the lines of what I've heard and off of the Article. None of it maters anyway, it's his company and it's his product that we adore him for, not his "personality" and beliefs.

Speaking of beliefs, he WAS a 33rd Degree Freemason, and it's pretty much a point of Freemasonry to be open to other religions, and ethnicities.

Despite what the internet says about them. Thank you, Dan Brown.

I have to begin by saying that your "teacher" has really offended me! I think Walt was such a great person that I paid the greatest tribute possible to him ~ my son's name is Elias. Anywho, that doesn't really help you out any. Your "teacher" isn't really a teacher. A true teacher doesn't promote opinion. The teach you to form your own through an insightful process of learning and investigation. As a teacher, I can come up with so many reasons why what this person is doing is wrong. It's illegal and unethical. The best piece of advice I can offer is to just consider this person practice for all of the narrow-minded people you will encounter in life.

By the way, I forgot to add this story. I had an Anti-Disney prof in college. She took great pride in telling us how her daughter wasn't allowed to watch fairy tales and that Disne world was money-stealing capitalism at its best. She also went so far as to assault Disney as the continuation of the American family nonsense brought on by ignorant Christians and their naive beliefs. And, yes, she still has a job. Boy, if I ever talked to a student like that...(not that I would because a teacher's job is to build kids up to succeed not tear them down). What doesn't kill us makes us stronger I suppose. Personal assaults have a way of strengthening our convictions.

Ok, so I have been talking to people and this is what the teacher of the course is teaching...

Students must pick a Disney Film, (Ironically only able to pick from about 5) and tell why it is harming our children.

Here are some of the things she is saying...

Little Mermaid- dresses innapropriatly throughout the entire movie, implies "giving up voice" to be with a man, must make man fall in love with body, african american voices as animals is racist (Sabastian)

Cinderella- abuse with sisters, blue eye blonde hair implies need for perfect body as well as big breasted and small waist, never talks to prince, he falls in love with her body

Beauty and the Beast- Bell able to look past abuse and Beast

Little Red Riding Hood- somehow rape?

Tarzan- racist

Pochahontas- racist, not historically accurate

Anyways, I feel like she is looking too far into these movies. Also, she made them watch a documentary on youtube, it's a 5 or 6 part series, you can watch it here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgxVvbai_nI called Mickey Mouse Monopoly.

So now that you guys have a clearer understanding of exactly what the unit is (remember she made this up and the other classes are not doing this) maybe you can give me some ideas on how to structure my letter in the paper.

I want it to center around how she is TEACHING this OPINION, and not allowing kids to research and decide for themselves the effect Disney has on children. Also, somethine about Disney being something that keeps that child alive in all of us, and her having no proof whatsoever that Disney has negative results.

If this is accurate, then this is pretty much all you need for your letter. She is begging the question by assuming students will see the films as harmful at all. It's not a serious approach to teaching, and any serious academic would have a problem with it. If a student gave a well-reasoned and researched paper arguing why a Disney movie was beneficial to kids, would that student get an F? That should be your line of attack. (But I would still suggest getting a copy of the syllabus to see exactly how this project is described in the teacher's own words, instead of relying on potentially irritated students for a second-hand description.)

Also, does she really suggest students see Disney's version of Little Red Riding Hood? :lookaroun

Another thought: The only movie you list which Walt Disney was actually involved in making was Cinderella. You said the whole point of this project was how WALT (and not the company he left behind) twisted the classics. If that's the case, most of those movies are irrelevant.

Yeah...and last I knew Cinderella did NOT have cleavage...so her argument is stupid anyway. :lookaroun

I want to sign up for that class now.
