- Slinky Dog Dash
I'm going to have to push back on this one just a little bit. It's not great and probably sucks to wait in it in the middle of a hot day, but I actually really like all the little details and the fact that the queue is basically the box that the Slinky Dog Dash playset came in. There's some really good scale gags and placemaking to get you into the mindset of actually being in a toy's perspective. Toy Story Land in general is really under-rated in that department.

For me the gold standards for terrible queues are Space Mountain at Disneyland and Navii River Journey. Disneyland's Space queue is just a bit fat nothingburger until you hit the march to the boarding area, and River Journey has you going around a whole bunch of wooden poles...Cool, hand carved wooden poles with some interesting art direction, but still. Midway Mania is also pretty bad at DCA, especially heinous because I love the Hollywood Studios version of that queue.

I've not done it yet, but I've heard horror stories of the Mine Cart Madness queue. The Cranky Kong AA looks great, but the entire rest of it looks incredibly boring. Waiting in that queue is the only part of my upcoming Epic Universe trip I'm actively dreading. I need the credit but I know it's going to be a total slog.

That's fair. I'm just thinking of the insane amount of switchbacks and the entire lack of shade until the last third of it. It's themed well enough, but I don't think it's good enough to cancel out the horrible design.

Honestly I have a really weird relationship with Slinky because I did the Toy Story Land early entry breakfast thing back when the land was new just so I could marathon it and basically never have the need to ride it ever again because I've gotten such a feel for it haha. I definitely knew the actual standby waits would be brutal. I did wait in a pretty decent line for a night ride, but obviously the heat wasn't as much of a factor in that scenario.

Gauntlet Challenge One:
Hiccups Wing Glider - The Dragon Study

The average high throughout the summer months in Orlando is 92 degrees therefore it made perfect sense for Universal to have an almost entirely outdoor queue in the sun for Hiccups Wing Glider at the Isle of Berk. This queue overhaul aims to fix one of the biggest issues guests have complained about at Epic - the lack of shade, nobody wants to be left cooking in the sun especially not in a boring switchback queue with nothing to look at or do. This is why with this overhaul the goal is to bring shade and activities for what has consistently been a crowd pleasing and highly attended attraction.

During the construction of the new Dragon Study queue building guests will be able to ride the attraction via a virtual queue and access the attraction through the exit path that leads directly to the locker station.

The Dragon Study allows for guests to enter an air conditioned chalet that contains interactive elements allowing for those waiting to learn more about dragons as they await their very own test flight. Interactive elements include:
- Mock dragon wings throughout the queue that can be activated with a push of a button to see the wing pop out over the head of guests.
- Miniature carved wooden dragons on a metal track that can be raced around the queue , similar to the bumble bee play feature at The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
- Dragon scale chimes embedded into the walls of the chalet that dependent on which dragon the scales came from make a different noise.

1760139458632.jpeg

Non interactive features include:
- A miniature model of the Wing Glider train snaking throughout the top of the chalet. A newly born Terrible Terror is seen popping out of the back of the model train.
- Gardens with trees holding up dragon wing shaped shade structures in the outdoor portion connecting the chalet to the rides entrance area and locker area.

These new changes aim to improve not only the attractions queue but the overall guest experience for the whole day with the addition of a covered and indoor air conditioned space providing sweet relief to guests of all ages.

Gauntlet Challenge Two:
The All Mother at Celestial Park’s Festival of Light

The All Mother is an otherworldly being that all Celestians look up to for she illuminated the way to new galaxies and portals connecting the fabric between us all that makes us one. The All Mother has fair skin with celestial blonde hair with star glitter scattered throughout her beach waves. She dons powder blue robes that flow with the wind with gold accents of stars, sparkles, and a crescent moon - when she comes out to greet Celestians and visiting travelers at night these accents are illuminated with fiber optics that add a layer of magic.

The All Mother is celebrated during the newly created Festival of Light which runs in Celestial Park from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend - the festival sees 8 additional festival food booths set up around Celestial Park each inspired by a planet in our solar system. During the Day at the main Celestial Park stage a traveling group of singing bards gather around to tell the tale of how the All Mother came to be and harnessed the light and energy to bring unison to Celestial Park. Throughout the area guests will find tapestries of space be hung up draping across the walkways providing additional shade during the hottest months of the years - at night these tapestries light up with fiber optics as they are cut from the same cloth as the All Mother’s robes.

Gauntlet Challenge Three:
Captain Cacao’s Sweet Flight

1760132769605.jpeg

Captain Cacao is of course the lovable breakout character from Universal that is quickly reaching iconic park mascot on the level of beloved characters like Orange Bird, Spike the Bee, and more. Captain Cacao naturally is a key player in Celestial Park and is a prefect candidate to helm a new family friendly attraction that doubles as a people eater - providing a much needed capacity boost to the park.

The location of the attraction will be the postponed food and beverage location with the portions in the entry plaza for the location being repurposed as the entrance for the ride and the rest of the building being converted to a facade for an expended show building housing Vekoma’s new aerial dark ride concept.

Guests will be greeted by Captain Cacao in the queue and welcome them to his hot air balloon workshop where he’s charting a course for the latest sweet find to bring back to the Celestians. Guests will go through an indoor queue with murals depicting Captain Cacao and his First Mate Nibs (a pink panda with a crescent moon patch on her right eye) on their many journeys through a gingerbread village, over a sea of pudding with jello islands, a lollipop forest and a peppermint tundra with white chocolate snowflakes. These murals act as foreshadowing as they are the four zones guests will visit.

The attraction itself will have six show rooms.
  1. Adventure Awaits: A quick welcome from Captain Cacao and Nibs as they tell guests to get their noses ready they’re smelling out the best sweet treats they can find.
  2. Gingerbread Village: Fly through a gingerbread scented room with cream cheese frosting dotting buildings and gingerbread people doing tasks while reacting to Cacao and Nibs looking into their homes and under rocks for sweet treats.
  3. Gelatin Waters: Swim through a sea of blue raspberry scented jello as our two intrepid travelers don scuba suits and swim alongside a sea monster made of pudding.
  4. Lolly Woods: Avoid citrus scented lollipop trees with tight turns and twists while seeing Cacao’s tongue stuck to a tree and Nib trying to get him off the tree. Hard candy gnomes pop out from the trees to tell of guests for recklessly flying around.
  5. Peppermint Tundra: Stumble across a village of white chocolate polar bears living out in igloos as Cacao and Nibs skate on a frozen over a peppermint scented pond.
  6. Nothing Sweeter than Friends: The finale scene show our two heroes in their own air ship surrounded by cotton candy scented clouds singing the theme of the ride - Nothing Sweeter than Friends, as they reminisce over their journey together. At the exit dock posters advertise new sweet treats that highlight the friendship theme with ingredient combinations coming together from each scene. There will be white chocolate gingerbread polar bear cookies, sour citrus lollipops with a chewy raspberry jelly center and peppermint dark chocolate filled with a Bavarian pudding cream center now sold in the nearby candy store.
To coincide with the debut of the attraction Captain Cacao and First Mate Nibs will be debuting as a meet and greet characters that guests of all ages can run up to and hug.
