Visions Fantastic: An Imagineering Competition (Game Thread)

My pitch...

Yea, this is a real Sophie's Choice that PerGron has found himself in. Everyone in the final eight has played a fantastic game, but alas four need to be cut. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, I haven't had a perfect game. I was particularly messy during the speed rounds where I had several very public crash outs due to mental health issues.

That being said, I feel like even during my crash out rounds I managed to crack out some strong stuff, and have made a bit of a comeback in the third act of the game.

The first couple rounds I was mostly dipping my toes in the water, taking on the Snoopy strategy of making small but meaningful contributions to the projects. That all changed at the roller coaster round. I don't want to blow too much smoke right away, but I truly think my work on Pinball Blizzard was a masterclass in team leadership and the finished product serves as one of my absolute all time proudest achievements.

In spite of my crash outs and legitimately wanting to quit a couple times, I preserved through the speed round and managed to come out stronger on the other side. The speed rounds had the lowest lows of the game but also some big highs. First off, I can proudly say that I was the guy who pitched what would ultimately turn out to be the WORST project I ever completed in the form of Scary Restaurant, which is an achievement in its own right. 🤣🤣

The two big highlights of the speed rounds for me were the Wings of Wonder exhibit and the Link Hogthrob meet n' greet. For Wings of Wonder I'd like to throw that out as a singular achievement on my end, and I really think I went out of my way to respect PerGron's love of animals and the authenticity of what a zoo experience should be and went literally inch by inch improving a park I know like my own backyard. We didn't win because of the lack of participation from the rest of the team, but I'm still super proud of my solo effort.

With Link Hogthrob, I loved turning an obscure podcast meme into a legitimately effective meet n greet. I think the character fits the over the top method role the encounter calls for and I really like the different Muppet cameos I threw in. I'm also super proud of the meta Peacemaker and Vigilante meet n' greet at Magic Mountain's abandoned fortress of solitude from the same round.

Finally getting into the third act, I really went full stop trying to do some of the biggest highlights in each of the rounds. While the James Bond land and Hollywood Hotel were tremendous group efforts, I really think I went all out with the Austin Powers ride and Great Movie Mini Golf. Going back to my early strategy, these weren't the main components of the projects, but I went out of my way to make them major highlights that the projects would feel incomplete without even though both of them I approached as Vanity passion projects. I also went out of my way with the presentation here, doing voice clips for Austin Powers and layout sketches of all 36 holes across my mini golf project.

I'm THE original Tiki. I'm the Godfather of these games. I might not always be the most active and I'm certainly a tech boomer when it comes to website design and other presentation elements, but I always, from day one of my Armchair Imagineering career, have strived to think outside of the box and come up with ideas that you can tell right away are MY concepts.

I feel like I've contributed some of the most memorable stand alone elements of the season, had a personal growth arc coming out stronger on the other side of wanting to quit, and have the legacy behind my name to earn my spot in the finals. I'm not going to lie, this is the first time all season I've felt legitimately NERVOUS about getting eliminated, but my god the field of competition is insane and if it is my time to go I'll happily take the free time I've been desperately craving and cheer on the final four from the sidelines.

Let's give it up to PerGron once again for a truly spectacular hosting effort! It amazes me time and time again that this community still finds the time to come together for these things, and I'm going to savor that for as long as it lasts.

Well, where do I start? I suppose I should start from the beginning. I started in Manor of Mysteries as a newbie that made several odd decisions (we don't talk about Fly Inside!), wasn't much of a team player, and made quite frankly... horrible maps. Look at me now, creating paragraphs upon paragraphs of descriptions, constantly improving my map making skills, and truly becoming an integral part of the team. I always gave my thoughts on projects and while I made some questionable decisions this round, they have always been leading to a greater goal. To be better. That's what we all want to do at the end of the day, plus winning.

I led my team on reviving the Mickey Mouse Review at Hollywood Studios, dipped my toes in the field of character design (I will always be proud of No Face Fred), I created a jazz bar with such an elaborate menu and band list that I shocked myself, and made the Atomium, which of course was horrible but we all have those moments. The crowning moment of my career in this game will always be... Branmere. That land has to be the crowning achievement of this entire game. It truly shows that if given enough time, I can create experiences that rival the greats despite my young age. I'll tell ya, keeping up with ya old geezers has been a lot harder than it looks (all jokes my friends) but I surprised myself with keeping up with some of the biggest behemoths on this forum.

What am I trying to say here? Honestly, once I start writing I can't seem to stop which is both a superpower and a curse. I have always been passionate about the projects that I lead, constantly second guessing myself to see if it's up to par with the other people on my team. I'm great at making maps despite the fact that I haven't really made any throughout this game. I have created great attraction, dining, and shopping descriptions for several locations around the world. While I admit, I sometimes don't make the best thematic decisions, the pros vastly outweigh the cons when it comes to my contributions to the several rounds that this game has had. I hate coming off this prideful, it really isn't a good look for me but I think it is rather necessary in this context. I have to thank Pergon for hosting such a delightful game that gave me something to do during the summer and subsequently took up more and more of my free time before I could only think about this game (slightly overexaggerated). My eyes are currently burning alive since my brightness is all the way up and it's dark as h*ll in my room as I struggle to fall asleep. What was I saying again? Oh yeah

I THINK I SHOULD BE IN THE GAME PERGON, PLEASE!!!

Entering this competition, I had two goals - to a). encourage and promote bold, new ideas, and b). uplift and support my team, so everyone can work together towards a).

On new ideas, I’m especially proud of Crossroads City, as well as more recently in Industryland with Lumière!, taking an animatronic show on the Industrial Revolution and running in the opposite direction of expected with mimes and classical music. I think there's a real benefit for out-of-the-box design, as it lets us discover so many possibilities for yourself as you experiment.

But, honestly most of my game was played with my second goal in mind - team building. Supporting opportunities for teammates to take a defining role for projects, lead the brainstorms, or encouraging them to tackle new roles and learning new skills. Team-wide enthusiasm in a pitch plays a major role on the finished project, and it’s the times where the entire time is inspired - firing on all cylinders - where the best and most creatively-inspired projects emerge.

It was never a super-planned-out “strategy” or anything, just a general attitude which I could apply round to round. For example, one of my teammates was very fond of transit, so they took charge on the transportation speed round, another a talented artist and took lead on concept art for an animal animatronic show. By intentionally taking a step back on brainstorming and allowing everyone to have a clear voice in the season, I think our teamwork greatly benefitted in both enthusiasm and diversity of creative work produced.

But no plan is perfect - sometimes things fall through the cracks - so I’d also play a pretty active role through the season as “backup” - keeping track of the deadline, slotting in as PM, making way too many Google sites and compiling to post.

This brings me to the semifinals, where eight people are all working on one resort… it’s a lot of amazing individual passion projects, and in a season where I was playing support for most of it, I figured why not go for broke with a very outside the box contribution. Not sure if it even qualifies as imagineering anymore lol, but I would always rather try something new, risky, and fail than not. If I am selected for the finals, I would carry that attitude into the round, and try something I haven’t before.

However, if I’m not selected I completely understand. This is a stacked final eight, and as others have already mentioned lol… I also genuinely could see any combination of us as the finalists. @PerGron best luck lol and thank you and all the rest of the cast for a great season this year!
