I had a problem like that last year, I was getting e mails from all over the place from people I never heard of. We ended up infecting a bank in Germany & the NYS Police main computer.
It wasn't a very nice conversation I'll tell you that.

"good evening, this is Major so and so from the NYS Police in Albany....."

I now keep my address book empty & asked everyone to take my name out of theirs.
I had Norton, but was still having problems so I switched to McAfee.

thats is hilarious, Whats even funny is how people who spammed me got the virus and asked me to take their name off... and they were in the spam area of the mailbox.....

I want to get a better visus thing, but dont have money for subsciptions or the softwear... my moms comoputer has a bad one that can detect but only quarenteen.. not eliminate newer ones...

Many viruses now adays don't actually come from the person listed in the from line of the e-mail. A lot of both Spam and e-mail borne viruses have forged IDs, meaning esentially they put in an e-mail address that is on their list into the the from field, so that it appears to come from somewhere else.

And no, not a thing you can do, at least physically to your computer, that can stop it.

One way to help avoid E-mail worms. Use a web based e-mail service such as Hotmail. Alot of viruses are built to affect Outlook Express, so to avoid those viruses, just DON'T USE IT!

The problem with Outlook is that it downloads all the information contained in an e-mail to a temporary file when you open it, thus infecting your computer. If you use a web based e-mail service you'll be a bit safer when opening infected e-mails. Just watch what attatchments you download.

And I always scan my incoming & outgoing mail. I have it set to notify me if multiple email is sent or if similar ones are sent in a short period of time.

You don't need to spend a dime for an antivirus program and a virus cleaner. Both are available for free from avast:

http://www.avast.com/

It is the very best antivirus product made, bar none. I have used it for years and have never been infected because avast stops any virus BEFORE your system gets infected.

Also make sure (with web-based email) that you save any important emails to your hard drive. We learned the hard way when their system had a glitch and we lost everything

I got hit hard with sasser (my studio too)...i didnt even download anything. My PROVIDER got infected and it slid over to my home network.

....This was before anyone knew how to FIX it...

I had to end up booting into Knoppix (bootable linux from CD) and manually clean my system...took me 13 hours...and put a HUGE speed bump in my production schedual, of course..the day AFTER i fixed it...patches/fixes were widely available.

From what i hear tho, that mac virus that just got released is even nastier (sorry mac users..no more bragging for you :D )

Since you now have avast, you also have two options to get rid of existing viruses. When avast finds and alerts you to an existing virus on your computer, you should then quarantine the virus, and then delete it.

The other option is to use the virus cleaner which you can download here (for free):

http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1060.html

Also, be advised that free avast starts you out with a 90 day license. After 90 days they will try to get you to upgrade to the "Pro" version (paid). However, if you desire to stay with the free version (which is excellent, since the paid version only has a few more bells and whistles) you will have to get a new license. The second license is free and is good for one year. After a year, you may again renew for another year for free or you can buy the paid version. It's up to you!

P.S. Avast is pirate talk for "Stop".
