Videotaping the varioius attactions in WDW...some questions!
Hey,

I leave on Monday for a trip to WDW/Universal. (July 29-August 9)

For anyone that is familar with videotaping I have some questions!

I always thought you weren't supposed to videotape on most rides at WDW. But after seeing posts here and videos on EBAY, I noticed that a lot of people do videotape on the rides! I was wondering if this allowed or is everyone "sneaking" their cameras on?

I want to videotape practically all the major rides that aren't too shaky (of course no RnRC...etc..) Say on ToT, will they tell me to put my video camera away?

Any tips on videotaping in the dark on rides or whatever would be awesome!

email me at Pkdcoastrs@aol.com if you want.

The rides they specifically state "no video taping" are...

Animal Kingdom - It's Tough to be a Bug
Epcot - Cranium Command, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, American Adventure,
Ellen's Energy Adventure, The Circle of Life
DIsney/MGM - Tower of Terror, Rock and Rollercoaster, Star Tours,
Muppets 3-D, One Man's Dream, The Magic of Disney Animation,
Sounds Dangerous
Magic Kingdom - Timekeeper, The ExtraTERRORestrial Alian Encounter,
Carousel of Progress
Universal - Jaws

There may be more. Those are the rides I went on that I remember they don't allow taping. The rest, they specifically don't say you can't, so I did. No problems, just don't use external lighting!

Of those, the one I did tape was Star Tours. The CM leaves before the ride begins. Most of the others, there was a CM sitting there, so I didn't try. I also taped Jaws at Universal. I tried to be sly and hold the camera low so the girl running the ride didn't see. Then I noticed a woman holding her camera high up over her head on the front of the ride, and she didn't say anything. I think she was new and didn't care. (THAT seems to be the key. Some won't let you, others don't mind.)

Hope this helps.

They told me to put my camera away on TOT. So I did. Until the doors closed. Then I pulled it back out and filmed the ride anyway. They never said a word about it.

One note:

If they tell you not to, and then you whip it out, don't be surprised if one of them has security waiting for you at the end of the attraction. That is the one all time easy way to annoy a CM - blatantly disobeying a direct instruction.

Not to mention it makes you a jerk.

Sorry if there's a billion security and safety reasons you're not allowed to video tape in some places.

Enjoy being escorted from the park.

Let's all get along LOL...Well thanks for replying. Now I know what I can and can't film! I appreciate both of your replies!

Oh yes, having videotapes showing perfectly where otherwise "hidden" doors and access panels are in the attractions couldn't possibly be a security problem.

If that is the reason I don't see why they would tell you not to film only on certain thrill rides. Don't they all have hidden doors somewhere? By the way I don't won't to have any ill feelings here. I just want a GOOD reason.

Did you read the list?

Over half of those attractions aren't thrill rides. You can't tape on thrill rides because its dangerous to do so.

You, however, may think you know better, but the lists of accident reports say otherwise.

I don't care if you videotape any rides/shows that let you. Just don't ruin my experience while trying to capture your memory on film. I'm going to be ticked and you're going to here it.

I get even more upset when I see people taping and taking pictures where they aren't allowed. You're going to hear from me, and I'm telling cast members to watch out (most people can't get it right on the first time and ruin it for others another time).

I don't understand why people can't follow simple rules. This and smoking in undesignated areas are my two biggest pet peeves and I'll say something everytime I see it.

Maybe because Disney says not to.

Ok guys I am not trying to make enemies here. I don't planning any doing any filming anymore. In a way I think it takes away from the experiece. I appologize to you guys if I have offended you in any way. I really have just wondered what the reasons for the doing that could possibly be. Lets all leave her friends

Wow I wasn't aware I was annoying so many people. :p

I say if you can get away with taping a ride you're not allowed to, more power to ya!!

Personally I don't care if I ruin anothers vacation or experience on an attraction. I'm there to have fun for my self and if someones ride is sooooo ruined by me taping that they didn't enjoy it they can just ride again.

And pleeeeeaaaaaaaase!! A paying customer escorted from a park for taping an attraction! Scare tactics don't work guys, we all know that doesn't happen. Disney would never risk losing a paying customer over such a petty ofense. I could perhaps see them confiscating a tape...only then to be replaced for free.

I realize some of you guys posting here are Disney employees. You're trained to do your job and part of that enatils enforcing the rules. But put your self in my shoes...I'm lucky if I get to WDW once every 2 years. I want to take my experience home in a perminat form so I can bore guest when they come over!!!

IMO there are good reasons for MOST rides. On rides like TOT and RNR, it's possible for a guest to drop their camcorder, opening the possibility of somebody getting hurt. People could also try to hold Disney responsible for damage (you know how sue happy the general public can be). Star Tours is probably something to do with Lucas, copyright stuff? It seems none of the 3D attractions are no taping allowed. Copyright again?

Timekeeper and Carousel don't make sense to me. Especially since they are only open seasonally, and rumor has both closing(?).

The way I see it, they can't ban video taping from the park all togeether. People are on vacation, and that's WHY they bought the camcorder in the first place. They want to remember their trip, long after it's gone.

I never heard of anybody getting thrown out for taping. The most I've heard is a cast member telling you to stop. Continue after you're told not to, and you could have trouble.

And DisJosh, it's people like you that are part of the problem. How can you say you don't care if you spoil a ride for others? That's the most selfish thing I've heard.

And turkey leg boy, I hope you get your a** kicked next time you tell a cast member somebody taped something. As long as it isn't somebody like DisJosh spoiling it for everybody, what do you care if somebody wants to tape a ride to preserve the memory of their trip?

Some of the caustic and sarcastic posts here are uncalled for, guys: "Enjoy being escorted from the park" is making a mountain out of a molehill and "because Disney says so" just doesn't really cut it for me, I'm afraid. (Nothing personal, turkey leg; we've exchanged posts here a few times and you seem like a cool guy, but that's my opinion.)

I'm not one to go out and break rules, but I'm not going to turn themepark regulations into commandments from God, either. I agree that people shouldn't bring external lighting into dark attractions, but all the stuff about people using cameras to locate hidden access doors is really stretching "security" concerns.

I'll be a CM starting next month, and I'll support the rules to the best of my ability, but I'm not gonna take it personally when somebody overlooks one. Some rules ARE really important, but rules don't equate to moral mandates...and breaking one isn't the end of the world. You may disagree with a person's actions, but don't insult people or make disparaging comments over something like this...it's just too minor.

What happened to people laughing on this board? :veryconfu

The degree of seriousness here has gone from -1 to 10 It's one of the reasons I rarely show my face here in General Discussion any more. I can't say anything without being reprimanded or yelled at. It's like kindergarten all over again.

I agreed with pretty much all of your post except this part. That's really a cruddy attitude to carry around; like I said earlier, rules aren't the "be-all, end-all," but carrying around an attitude like that is pretty lame, man. There are some people who may not ever get to go back to the park, and may not be able to get right back in line, for various reasons. You should make an effort to avoid disenfranchising those around you, if possible ; it's just common courtesy--but if you really believed in that, I suspect you wouldn't have made that comment. Perhaps I'm wrong.
