Try to get your hands on Avid Xpress Pro!
It's the best package around.

http://www.avid.com

Loaded with features and functionality, Avid Xpress Pro software lets users edit DV, mix resolutions in the timeline, and save space using the new 15:1s offline resolution. Editors can access 24 video and 24 audio tracks with unlimited layers, apply 2D and 3D OpenGL-based effects, edit true 23.976 media, trim and edit using JKL keys, and customize their workspaces. Built-in software "experts" such as AutoCorrect and NaturalMatch color correction, DV Scene Extraction, AutoSave, and ExpertRender let both new and experienced users focus on the creative process, not the technology. And with both Mac OS X and Windows XP software included in the same box so you are ready for the future, no matter what system you're using when you get there

Hope this helps.

You know as well as I do that I extremely despise resurrecting dinosaur threads... But... well... I need some advice... lbnol

I need some good editing software to go with my new camcorder. I really don't want to/cannot spend over $100 (US)... That's the point of no return, more or less. I've looked at the features of the Pinnacle Studio (8) and they pretty much correspond to what I want to do with my edited movies: I want to upload them via IEEE 1394 (FireWire) to my computer, maybe rearrange the clips, maybe add a few transitions here and there, maybe add some background CD-qualtiy music, then burn them onto a DVD with a DVD menu and such (I have a DVD burner on my computer)...

The problem is, I've read MANY negative reviews of this software. MANY. Amazon.com, epinions.com, etc. The consensus is that this software is very unstable and causes the computer to crash alot and that you should "NOT buy this!"

Has anybody else out there had many problems with this software, if you have/had it?

Or is all this just a big hoopla over nothing?

Are there any alternatives that fit my needs (I wrote them above)? And CHEAP? I cannot spend $500 + on something like Premiere, as much as I would like to. :(

Please, your opinions folks! Much appreciated! :D

try to get premiere off of e-bay or something like that, its cheaper to buy it there and get the upgrade from Adobe, and dont worry if you buy like a Mac version, you can always send the disc to Adobe and they will mail you the PC disc for it.

I've been looking around on eBay just now... How's this deal?... It's cheaper than the retail version I think... Is this the real version? And does this software also allow you to burn your movies to DVD and make DVD menus? :)

Pinnacle Studio 8 is the only app that allows my Pinnacle DC10+ to capture in Windows 2000. I hadn't had any trouble with it. Pinnacle pulled a bad stategy by not offering win2K drivers for that capture board and instead ONLY including them in Pinnacle Studio 7 and Pinnacle Studio 8.. which doesn't make them accessible to any other app. It's pretty foul of them to abandon a product like that unless you buy their software. Besides that point, I'm afraid I can't tell you much about Studio 8 as I only use it to cap. The rest of the stuff I need to do, I do it with Virtualdub for free.

I've never had any trouble with Pinnacle Studio. It's really easy to use and you can do lots of cool stuff. I make movies all the time and burn them on to DVD using Pinnacle. You can even make your own menus.

Pinnacle may not have all the bells and whistles of Adobe Premiere but it is an affordable and good alternative.

I used Movie Star5 for a while, but it won't work anymore because it thinks that my computer doesn't have any space left on the harddrive. My DVD is good for putting a DVD project together, but if you use it to upload video, then expect a massive size because it uploads a meg a second.

For me, I went the cheap route. I've got a ATI TV Wonder VE capture card which allows me to connect my VCR directly to my puter through RCA jacks, then I use VirtualDub to actually capture the video, then I use either TMPGEnc or DVDx to convert it to the file type of my choice. Pretty cheap setup, plus it yields pretty decent results.

Oh, I'm sorry I couldn't hear you over you installing more critical Windows updates so your system isn't hacked or crash....

Also, I'm going to the Panther launch tonight, so ta-ta!

At least Windoze gives you an error message that explains what happened. On Macs, all i ever got was a 'sorry an error has occured, you must restart' anytime i tried to do more than one thing at a time. And that was at work, at a newspaper in a medium-sized market last month. All the macs ever did was crash....

I'd rather deal with a system that gives out critical updates then buy from a company that sells products with batteries that cant be replaced.... :D

HAHAHA!!!! PWNED!!! sorry... had to be said..

plus.. my Archos AV320 smokes my old Ipod in every single way imaginable... then again, having the ability to view divx and xvid movies is a feature the Ipod needed.

My ipod is currently being used for data backup and nothing more. There isn't as much as 1 MP3 on there, much less the thousands it can hold

I would love to have Avid and a computer that could handle it. But until then i am stuck with a copy of Adobe Premiere 6.5 and Pro 7

I've been reading reviews on Amazon about Pinnacle 9 and it's all bad! (infested with bugs).

Is anyone using it now, and are the reviews accurate? Any other options?

Thanks in advance.

If you look for the reviews on Pinnacle 8 on Amazon, you will see pretty much the same type of comments.

I have yet to upgrade to version 9 (frankly the "new" features don't warrant a brand new purchase), but I have yet to come across the numerous bugs that people describe.

Pinnacle by no stretch of the imagination is a perfect program. Occasionally, it just does some weird things. However, for the ease of use it provides and the power it enables the user for the price, you truly can't go wrong.

I use the program almost consitently. It easily allows me to create extremely professional works of video and DVD in an environment that is quite intuitive.

There are other options out there such as Final Cut pro., however you really can't beat Pinnacle for the price. If you are truly interested in doing extensive, hardcore editing, I would suggest leaning towards Adobe's excellent (but expensive) Premiere.
