Ok, I read it, and WOW was that good. That is what I remember Disney Magic is about. I miss that. What a great guy. I am a share holder (I think 10 shares or something dumb like that, but still) I think I will look into more of what I can do to support Roy.

Wow, that was a really good speech!:sohappy:

Hate that I cruised into this so late, but here's my .02 -

I think it's awful that guests would be purposefully be directed thru a backstage (dumpster/trash?) area.

I have so many thoughts rushing through my head on this subject ... the only thing I keep coming back to is "What would Walt do?" Walt wouldn't want his guests hearded past dumpsters. I have no idea how long this secondary exit has been used - I do know that it sounds very less than magical.

I was in MK last night. It was my first time there since summer. After the new Dreams fireworks show ended (which is very good btw) Disney castmembers were detouring the guests' exit route to facilitate crowd traffic on Main Street. Half the crowd was allowed to continue walking down Main Street toward the exit, while they directed the other half (of which I was part of) through a Cast Member Only area behind the Plaza Restaurant and had us walk through about 150 feet of "off stage" area until they routed us back to Main Street at Exhibition Hall. I saw everything back there that traditional Disney operators would have NEVER allowed. Dumpsters, barricades, dirt, puddles, liter, mangy old signs and fences, etc. This was shocking to me, but it was even more troubling. I couldn't understand why they would compromise the magic and mystery of the Magic Kingdom just to expedite the exiting process by MAYBE 5 minutes.

This is not the first thing I've encountered at WDW in recent years that troubled me. Something has changed in recent years, whether it's the personnel up at the executive level of parks/resorts or the management at MK is doung something that the old school Disney execs are not aware of. The Disney that I grew up with would have never allowed this.

Can you say "Go With The Flow?" ;)

This does sound pretty crazy...

But I don't think Disney would have done this if it hadn't have been absoloutley necesary - surely the safety of all guests comes first, even before the magic.

"Hey mom, I got to walk down Main Street today, and saw Mickey waving at me from the Main Street Bridge. I was being squeezed in between some 400lb guy on my right and a old lady on my left who didn't know that deodrant had ever been invented, and as I result I fell over a 3yr old toddler in front of me who grazed his head and I sprained my ankle, but it was sooooo magical!!"

In fact, last September after watching a showing of Fantasmic, they directed half the guests (including me) through a back entrance that lead you almost to the park entrance and I don't remember seeing anything 'un-magical'. It was just a pathway that lead us behind everything, but you didn't see any trash cans etc.

actually, it was relativley clean back there this weekend. no huge dumpsters overfilled with trash, no giant pile of crates and boxes, etc. so, yeah, it ain't exactly "magical" but there are worse days to be back there, trust me. =)

I would rather they get people out of the park safely. I mean, the illusion of Disney is so well done that even I don't really think about all the works and gears backstage when I'm a guest. I'm certain no children were traumatized to learn that the CMs had things like cars, a cafeteria, and loading bays.

actually, I would have really liked to see it if I were a kid.

if they have such a crowd control problem, it is somewhat feasible to build a "back alley" behind Main Street East similar to what they have at DLP. if they're going to insist on walking people through the cast lot, then I think that's the mosre intelligent solution.

Fantasmic guests are led through a "backstage" area that's actually ultra well-kept. and, I mean, come on, kids aren't gonna see anything they didn't already see in the back lot.

call me Pixie Dustless, but I think this sort of this is permissable - to a degree - if it means Little Timmy's toe doesn't get broken on Main Street.

to be frank, the area behing Main Street is pretty bland. I can't imagine anybody could recall it vividly if they were shoved through it at night.

and no, the last thing I want is to see guests reguarly herded through the ultilidors, just to deflate that in advance. :)

My last post on this issue:D I promise:cool:

Twice I have been FORCED to exit behind Main St. CM's and Security blocked our way and directed us to the backstage exit. There was no choice to exit via Main St. unless I wanted to shove Security and CM's out of my way.

I agree it doesn't happen every night. I have had it happen less than ten times in the past 6-7 years. So why spend money on theaming? I agree with Griz, Because it is Disney! It is not some Carney show.

As for safety. It has not been well lighted the times I have been forced to use the backstage exit.

Fantasmic backstage exit is another story. No dumpsters, treed path and well lighted for safety.

And when you make CEO Griz please bring back Horizons, Walter's naration of SSE and "Just make believe you're a tiny little seed".:D

well, define "not well lit." it's def. brighter than, say, Tomorrowland or Fronteirland at night. unless they turned down the lights in an effort to keep your attention away from the buildings...

the apparent argument is that you shouldn't have to / ever see a backstage area at WDW or DL. I guess I'm the only guest who ever got a kick out of it? :veryconfu

I'm sorry, I just don't feel it's that big of an issue. due apologies to those who are mortified.

This has been going on at least since 1991 when I worked there. On July 4, we opened up the gates at the crossroads section of main street (this was before they added more shops), and fed the flow of people back in by the stable area. We erected walls of curtains and such to keep people from seeing the main street vehicles parking area and other stuff. But of course, we could not block everything.

I agree, you should not have to see backstage if you don't want to. Disney usually takes great pains to keep behind the scene stuff from view.

However, you can see lots of backstage areas just riding the monorail. You can see behind Jungle Cruise where the Electric Light boats are stored, and you can see cast member break areas behind the hotels and buildings in EPCOT. Last time I went, I noticed how much junk is stored all around the Contemporary.

Just my 2 cents in a very long thread.

ditto...

IMO, while Safety is #1, and Show is #4 to the cast and company, to the fanatical guests show is #1... which is really bad.

"little timmy had his toes crused by a stroller.. but it's ok.. cause we didn't see a garbage dumpster."

Give me a break.

Well if you dont want to see any of that then dont go back stage. And i f you march in the parade well all we can say is sorry. YOu knew what was goin goto happen when you wnet so I mean all thats is what i have to say aobu thte band things. On teh ohter hand with the exiting of the park you have to remember safty. I mean there are toher places that do the same things and all and thouse are emergency exits just like the ones you went out at Disney. Remember if you did not have those exits then Disney adn a lot of other places you love would be shut down...:(

There ya go! See. Everyone will take from it what they will. Some people love seeing backstage areas and some people don't. But safety is #1 in my book. I'd rather have people see the backstage area then to have a bad experience leaving the park in a mad rush down a narrow street with thousands of grumpy guests.

In case anyone thinks this is a new thing, I recall guests being led backstage in 1987. I was a CM, and we were eating at the place behind the Plaza Pavillion, on July 4. We ate outside, overlooking the MO parking lot, and guests were walking by. It was weird, but necessary with the crowds. I think the reason it happens more often now is that the crowds are much larger now.
