because Verizon "presents" Kim possible at Epcot, and people though they were a nice fit, despite iPhones having better apps, or even Windows Mobile and Android apps as well.

VZ gets the Sholes / Droid next month :king:

yea, but with the program, it might be tied into V-cast with a minor app rather than being a App that is downloaded to the phone... meaning, all phones would be able to use it, but you wont have it on the phone... which defeats the idea of apps as android / Apple / Windows Mobile are there for... (Like the weather app on my phone is goes to acuweather.com when I ask for a map or other stuff...)

I'm kind of bummed by the price, considering this is the first time they have done something official like this for the Parks. Maybe make it free for the first year and then add a one-time fee of 9.99. Clearly they aren't marketing this to the families that visit the parks once every 2 or 3 years...

I agree it sounds like they are marketing to regular guests maybe annual passholders who will use it for 6mths. If they wanted too market it to vactioning families then a 1 week duration would be the offering.

I was part of the focus group for this at EPCOt last year December. This looked really cool especially the wait times were updated to the minute and would pop up when you were near them on the GPS map.

Why only verizon customers . A lot of people have iPhones that can do this. Remember Steve jobs is on Disney board but yet they don't let apple iPhones use this.

I would presume, in large part, because Verizon Wireless is the largest cell phone company in the U.S., with the most subscribers. While iPhone users might be more present online and maybe more tech-savvy, from a business standpoint it makes MUCH more sense to sign an agreement with the company that gives you the largest pool of potential customers.

Basing it on numbers from Wikipedia, Verizon currently has 87.7 million subscribers, but there have only been 21.1 million iPhones sold. (Plus, I'm sure that iPhone number is strictly units *sold*, perhaps world-wide, and not the number of currently-active iPhones)

So while a lot of the "trendy" people may have iPhones, they only make up a small percentage of the total US cell phone market.

(who does not have an iPhone, has no need for one, and still has his 4-5 year old phone from Verizon Wireless, though it needs replacement soon as the "3" key is starting to get flakey...)

Here is some more information from the Disney Parks Blog. It also notes about the new Mobile Disney Parks website coming soon.

Disney Parks Blog said:
Earlier this year, we announced our first official Disney Parks mobile application – Mobile Magic. Now, we’re sharing details and screen shots.

You’ll recall that Mobile Magic is bringing attraction wait times, FASTPASS return times, extensive information on character locations and more for Walt Disney World and Disneyland theme parks to your Verizon Wireless phone. Development work has been ongoing but the team recently offered a walkthrough of the app and it’s looking great.

MobileMagic.jpg

Attraction wait times on your Verizon Wireless device will be unique. There’s been an investment in the backend infrastructure to support Mobile Magic and offer actual wait times based directly on Disney Parks information.
As for FASTPASS, you’ll be able to check if it’s still available for specific attractions. And if FASTPASS is available, the app will deliver information about the next return time. So, if you can still get a FASTPASS, the application will show, for example: FP: 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Also, mobile maps are GPS-enabled. While wandering the parks, your location will be indicated by a white circle. Then it’s simple to scroll through content and find it on the map via a “getting there” option. The map zooms out and allows you to see your location and exactly where the character greeting or restaurant can be located.

It’s important to note that actual wait times, FASTPASS return times and detailed character appearances are only available in the park you are in. When you’re out of the park or on the soon-to-be-launched mobile Web site, you’ll see scaled-down wait time descriptions (now – moderate – high demand) FASTPASS availability (yes – limited availability – not available) and the list of character appearances will be limited.

If you are not a Verizon Wireless subscriber, you can still use your mobile phone to access select information via text and on the Disney Parks Mobile Web site. It’s just better from our friends at Verizon Wireless.

There’s more to this offering but we wanted to share these screen grabs and let you know that the app is coming soon. So, how’s it looking?

Of course, there are some official details you should know about: The downloadable Mobile Magic application for Verizon Wireless subscribers is available for purchase. Message and data rates also may apply. Coverage not available everywhere. Availability subject to handset limitations. If you’re under 18, get your parent’s permission first.

Looking at the comments, a lot of people also want an iPhone that would provide this information.

I will have to admit that this is a good idea. But it is a tad pricy for 6 months...

Maybe this is where the Nintendo DS idea eventually evolved into? :lookaroun

Has anyone considered that Verizon has set the price, not Disney?

This pricing reeks of Verizon policy.
That's true. Otherwise, it would be more expensive. And only in a month. :p:zipit:

I have an Iphone and I am sad that it is only for Verizon but then again I am happy too. I for one would not spend 10 bucks for 6 months of service. That is unreal. Come one now.

I dropped verizon to go get the iPhone. Best device in the world on the worst service in the world. :/
I agree. I'm back to Verizon the minute (if) they release the iPhone for that service. Contract be damned.

I agree that this seems like a strange pricing structure. I wonder what their target demographic is?
