Value Hotels: Which is the best?

In terms of transportation, if you are staying on property and tiring of the buses you can park for free at the parks. I am very traditionally minded and would urge you to drive to the Transportation and Ticket Center (or bus to EPCOT Center and then monorail) for your first visit to the Magic Kingdom. You'll then get to experience the grand reveal as originally intended.

Where exactly is the Transportation and Ticket Center?

It is just south of the Magic Kingdom across Seven Seas Lagoon. The main road, World Drive, goes right to it. The original entry sequence is a sight whereas the bus to the Magic Kingdom is like being dropped off at Harbor Blvd without the lush vegetation.

Oh, okay, sounds good. Now how would we get there from our hotel? Is there a bus stop in front of the Transportation and Ticket Center?

You could either drive yourself and just follow the signs to the Magic Kingdom or take a bus to EPCOT Center and then the Monorail to the Transportation and Ticket Center. The Magic Kingdom buses from the Resorts go straight to the park.

Mostly, the MK parking lot. You park in the lot and then take a tram to the TTC. There are ticket booths there. You can then take a monorail or ferry to the MK. You could also take the monorail to Epcot. Be sure, if you're going to the MK, that you don't get on the Epcot monorail!

If you're in a WDW hotel, the bus will get you to the MK faster than driving, but the bus drops you off at the MK entrance. You don't take a boat or monorail. Some people drive, anyway, because they want to take the monorail or boat. Some people drive because they don't want to wait for a bus at closing. I've found it to be a lot quicker driving out than waiting for the bus. The bus lines get long.

There is a resort monorail, further complicating it all. It stops at the three monorail hotels (Contemporary, Poly, GF) as well as the MK and the TTC. It isn't a big deal, because if you accidentally got on that, you'd still end up with a stop at the MK.

Besides monorailing to the MK (or Epcot) or taking a ferry boat, you can also get to the Poly from the TTC. When you arrive there and exit the tram, off to the left will be a sign directing you to the walkway. It's about fifteen steps down a little, landscaped path and you're on the Poly grounds.

If you're going to Epcot, just drive to Epcot. Going to the TTC and taking the monorail would be the long way of getting to Epcot. :)

Although I said I'd leave you alone, I've gotta chime in. Using google maps for WDW, you can get a great idea of the locations and the scale of everything.

I have never stayed at Art of Animation, but supposedly their food court has quite yummy choices. I don't see quick service meals being too much more expensive than off-site restaurants. It just depends on your "taste".;) The best and freshest quick service meals are at EPCOT, especially Sunshine Seasons in Living with the Land.:) Go to Downtown Disney and get a pizza at Wolfgang Puck Express- delicious!:)
We have stayed at POP and All Star Music ( Suite). We liked both, but POP has a cool pool "Hippie Dippie" and some nice views of the lake with a bridge that connects over to AOA. The bus service at POP is better, but if you're driving, you park at the resorts for free. But, I'd just park my car and sit back and relax during my vacation. POP has a food court that is intertwined with the shopping area. It's kinda neat.;)
Have fun!:D

I'm an AOA girl. We'll be staying there for the fourth time in May. We stayed in the Mermaid standard rooms the first time, but even though they are cute, cute, cute, we need the room in the suites. Gotta have two bathrooms.
The food court has a ton of choices. You do need to make sure and get there early or at off times or you will wait in a long line. The problem is lots of people come in from other resorts to eat there and walk around. However, as I said, as long as we get there early, we are fine. Busses are pretty regular. We did have to wait a while coming back to the resort when the parks closed, but it was no longer wait than when we stayed at PORS.
Since it's just the two of you, if you could get a good deal, I would recommend PORS or POFQ. They have a boat to DTD and tons of onsite activities. Plus, they have a pretty good food court also. PORS is beautiful. They
have a spring special that is as cheap as the non-discount price at AOA for a standard going right now. They don't discount the Mermaid rooms and most of the time they don't discount the Nemo suites.
If we don't need EMH's we stay at Doubletree Suites across the street from DTD. It has regular bus service to the parks as do the Disney resorts. The rooms have all just been renovated and are really large. All rooms are suites, and not Disney size suites, but real suites. They are as close to the parks as most of the Disney resorts.
Another choice where you still get the EMH's and bus service is the Hilton across from DTD. It's a nice place. Rooms are small, but not as small as the Disney resorts. They run discounts all the time.
The Mermaid rooms are a distance from the lobby, but we drove our car to the front lot and parked and caught the bus instead of walking all the time.

As far as the value resorts are considered we've stayed at the all stars many times and at pop three or four times and we loved them all equally.....can't really say we like one over the other as far as value resorts are considered.

@raven24, I am so excited that you are visiting WDW. Like you, I am at DL local that has visited DL frequently since the 80s. I will be happy to give you advice on WDW, from a DL local's perspective.

How many days will you have in WDW at the parks? Are you going to visit Universal also?

I'm excited as well. We're spending a week there. No Universal, unfortunately.

I haven't been back to WDW since AoA opened, but I just can't see spending the extra cash just to use their pools (but we're not pool people.) Pop Century is like my second home. We have a trip planned for this September at ASMusic, and it's killing me. I'm probably going to switch to Pop unless I can't get a discount there.
Pop has the better bus service, it's close to Epcot and the Studios, and the food court is pretty good. Plus now you can walk over to the AoA food court.

I usually suggest driving if you'll have a car, but if you're driving from CA to FL, maybe park the car and use the buses for the first few days. It'll help you get used to the size of the place, too.

@raven24 I hope your first trip to WDW this summer is as wonderful as I hope our first trip to DL this May will be! We've stayed at All Star Movies and Pop, and we preferred Pop although both are fine. Like others, I do recommend staying on property. Except for one trip, we have always had a rental car even though we stayed on property; I think it can be a huge asset. Although others swear by the buses, we just don't like to wait, and you cannot walk between most parks/resorts. Also, buses do not go from resort to resort (only resort to park and back) in case you change your mind and decide to book a meal at a resort other than your own. If you are even slightly on the fence about booking any table-service meals, I do recommend that you reserve them - you can always cancel them.

My vote is for Pop Century. As others have stated, the All-Stars share stops for the buses, although at the end of the night, the Pop bus lines can be ferociously long. I'd rent a car if possible, but otherwise the bus system (including the magical express) is really nice to have. As for Pop, see if you can request a room in the 60's or 70's as they're closest to food/lobby/busses. The far side of the 80's building can be a bit of a walk, try to avoud it if you can. Oh, and they're kind of expensive (what at Disney isn't?), but the tv dinners at the food court are delicious and filling. They and the tie-dye cupcakes/cheese cake are my favorite Pop foods!!

I love them all, but I have to say my favorite is All-Star Music. Not necessarily for the resort itself, but for the great memories I've had there over the years :). Sorry I wan't that much help.

My best friend and I are planning a trip to WDW for next year (first-timers). We're looking at the value hotels...besides Art of Animation, which would you guys say is the best/coolest? Thank you!

I find staying at one of the three *original* Values is better in terms of location ( closer to the Parks ) and pricing then Pop.
Since Pop ( and Art of Animation ) are both the *newer* Values, the price often reflects that and is higher.

Pop is also off on it*s own...check out a Property map to see what i mean.
It can eat up some travel time to get to and from your Resort to the Parks, especially on the Disney Transport buses.
The three All Star Resorts are all immediately next door to each other, linked only by their parking lots and various outside walkways.
It is a short 10 minute ride via bus or car to MK, EPCOT, or DHS...even less to DAK.

I find *All Star Music* to be my favorite of the lot for several reasons.
It is pretty nice for basic needs overall.
Clean room and nicely themed without too much overkill, and it is between Sports and Movies.
In my personal experiences over the years of staying there i have found it to have several advantages that many may not be aware of.

First advantage - the bus/transport advantage in the evening.

Staying at the All Stars means that at the end of the night, during the Park Close crunch, you will have THREE bus destination choices to take you back to your Resort instead of the usual ONE destination bus that everyone else will have to wait for.
As noted earlier, all three of the All Star Resorts are within immediate walking distance to each other, so this means you can take any All Star bus if need be and just hoof it to your Resort in a couple of minutes.
This can be a real lifesaver on those evenings when the bus lines get insanely long.
I cannot stress how handy this aspect has been when things have gotten ugly at the bus terminals late at night post Park Dump/Close.
It has saved me ( and my sanity ) SO many times in the past!

While everyone else is waiting for their sole Resort bus taking them back to their one hotel ( like Pop, for example..) you just pick the shortest line of the THREE All Star Resorts and off you go!
Sports, Movies, or Music...regardless of which one you are actually staying in you can in reality take any of the three specifically designated buses.

Of course...this strategy may not work if at that particular time the buses are not running separate Resort runs...usually during slower times.
Sometimes in those cases, a *All Star Resorts* destination bus will be running in which case all three Resorts will pack on.
It is always better when you have the three routes separated, but sometimes that is not always the case.
Usually it depends on the crowd levels, what Park you are at, and when you are trying to leave to go back to your Resort.
During peak transport times however there is usually buses assigned to each of the three All Star Resorts.

Second advantage relates to the differences in clientele that typically rooms at the three All Star Resorts.

All Star Music has the least amount of children/families rooming there when compared to Sports and Movies.
All Star Movies tends to attract the kids and families in droves like magnets..mainly due to the visual appeal of the themed statues on the grounds related to Toy Story and 101 Dalmatians are the primary draw.
All Star Sports also draws in a lot of kids/families, but Sports also pulls in most of the tour groups, cheerleaders, sports teams, etc that are in town at any given time for competitions or school visitations.
You will sometimes see price differences that reflect this as well.
Often Movies will be priced higher then Music at certain times of the year, same goes for Sports.

Music however does have a few downsides, primarily it*s Food Court.
It is massive, and has decent food, but the decor/theme is sparse and it feels very mall-like.
It*s huge size can also be a disadvantage, as it encourages a feeling of overcrowding sometimes.
*Morning mayhem* is what i call it...the mad crush of people who show up for breakfast.
Note to self - Do breakfast elsewhere if you want to avoid starting your day like that!

Movies has the better Food Court for theme and setting, and the food choices vary slightly better at times from Music.
It is smaller in size, which i find drives people outside or back to their rooms to eat.
When i stay at Music, i tend to walk over to Movies and hit their Food Court instead during the off-times.
Sports feels very crowded to me....and not being a sports fan in general the theme is kind of blah to my tastes.
All three basically offer the same menu items, though i find Movies offers a slight cut above.
MIght just be the setting, though.
I encourage you to explore the other two All Stars if you stay in one of them.
They all are similar, but also unique in their layout and presentation of theme.

All Star Music has always fit my travel criteria perfectly like a glove.
Not a bulky white Mickey glove mind you...but a nice glove that fits my hand perfectly.
Clean, tidy, room..though small, but i like that cozy aspect.
A comfy bed, nice theming and grounds, and for a visitor it most importantly gives you all the benefits of staying *On Property* at a Disney Resort but not paying too outrageous a price.
Those *benefits* for Resort Guests only are numerous, but the most valued are EMH, free Disney Transportation and airport transfers via Magical Express, and most recently FP+ options/MagicBands.

Average off-seasons pricing for Music used to start at $68 - $89 a night...slightly more during busier seasons.
Summertime rates will be $100+ at night.

Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask me more about these particular Resorts, as i have spent a lot of time in them over the years in the past...mostly Music.
:)
